It seems that Rosemary Clooney was born and raised in Maysville and her first movie opened here as well. The theater is very historical and is very lovely. In 1928, a flamboyant and successful Maysville businessman, Col. J. Barbour Russell announced plans to build such a theater in the small town of Maysville at a cost of $125,000. The Russell Theatre was the result of the exciting period of movie palace theater construction. A long time favorite landmark in downtown Maysville, many like myself saw our first childhood movie…read morethere. Fast forward to 2017, I took my 18 year old son to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show there. They are trying to restore the building which has fallen into some disrepair. Anyway. The show that night was great! The actors were okay. The movie is a classic. The seats have been removed so you sit on folding chairs.

The tour is about 45 minutes long. You get a history of the Rankin family as well as more information about the Ripley area. The Rankin family sits atop a hill and it's easy to imagine how a candle in the window would be seen from the Kentucky side. We didn't go down the stairs due to the weather. The family history was interesting and the fact that all 15 were involved in assisting their father's work was amazing. The hand painted stencils in the front room were beautiful. Overall, a great tour that everyone should take time for.
