First of all, there was easy and convenient parking and then great signage for the walkway leading to the main building. Once inside, I was straightaway guided to the staff member I needed to talk to, she told me which forms to fill out and my business was concluded in 15 minutes. Situated behind the Municipal building, I spotted a lovely lake with a pathway to rival Crane's Roost Park in Altamonte Springs, but this looked way more charming and green. I didn't have time to check this area in detail on this visit, but there was signage about an upcoming Jazz Fest, and so hope will be able to come to that and check out the locale more in depth then. Okay, am ending this review on a trivia note: The most famous person to have lived in the City of Casselberry has to be Hedy Lamarr, an actress familiar to those of you who watched TMC as religiously as I did during my teenage years! They have a long boardwalk that you can walk on that goes over the the lake. They have an art sculpture house and a art gallery. Nice bathrooms. Sometimes they have concerts. A great place to come to walk or sit and relax. I also have a small splash pad for the kids.

Wide, paved paths wind through lush gardens filled with native plants. The park also has a water play area, amphitheater, playground, boat dock, board walk along Lake Concord, and a fountain. The City of Casselberry has a strong commitment to the environment with its stormwater management initiatives in this park. Lake Concord Park is also a hub of art and culture. The park contains a sculpture walk with over 40 public sculptures, and three free art galleries: The Art House, The Sculpture House, and Art Center. I enjoyed exploring all of the interesting public art pieces in the garden along the sculpture walk. I also checked out the temporary exhibits in the galleries which are further detailed in separate reviews. Many city events are held in the park during the year. These include Earth Fest, Spring Jazz and Art Festival, Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, Casselberry Food and Wine Festival, concerts, car shows, and food trucks. Lake Concord Park does a great job of drawing the community together with support for the arts, well thought out recreational amenities, and engaging events.

The town of Eatonville was founded by three Union officers, Captain Josiah Eaton, Captain Lewis Lawrence and another officer whose name has fallen between the cracks of history and I could not obtain. Following the Civil War, these three men left America to settle in South America, but at some point on their voyage, they turned back and settled in central Florida. The three former Union officers found the land in central Florida to be very inhabitable and soon found themselves developing the land around Lake Maitland, giving us what we now know as the city of Maitland, Florida. The former slaves who stayed in the central Florida area were employed to help clear the land and a black community popped up beside Maitland where these workers lived. Tony Taylor, a black man, was elected as Eatonville's first mayor and another black man, Joe Clarke, was elected as the town marshall. Clarke approached Captain Eaton and Captain Lawrence with the idea of an all black town and the former Union officers supported the land. After a year of planning, Eaton and Lawrence bought a parcel of land adjacent to Maitland and built a church and hall for general assembly. Shortly after this, in August of 1887, the town of Eatonville received its charter of incorporation from Tallahassee. The town of Eatonville today still stands and is rightfully proud of its rich history. It is conveniently just off of the interstate and offers a community rich in heritage. Zora Neale Hurston was raised in this community, as was football player Deacon Jones. I recommend a visit to Eatonville. Walk upon the streets where an amazing history was forged, grab a meal in a local restaurant, learn a little bit more about our world.

While I am very familiar with the blue markers of the state wide Florida Historical Marker Program,…read moreoccasionally I will come across a county or city historic marker. On a recent walk around City Hall, I found this marker erected by the Seminole County Historic Society. Historic markers are a great way to learn about the formative people, buildings, and events in Florida's history. Hibbard Casselberry is the founder of Casselberry, Florida. In 1926 he came to the area to visit his family in Winter Park. At the time the surrounding area was a fern farm that grew asparagus plumosis ferns for the florist industry. Casselberry became the sales manager for Fern Park Estates but left to plat his own subdivision, Winter Park Ferneries which became known as Fern Park. Throughout the 1930's he continued to develop his fernery and real estate business. This marker recounts how the City of Casselberry was initially tax free. Mr. Gordon Barnett, a local former state legislator proposed a town charter for Fern Park that included property taxes. Mr. Casselberry's Countered with a tax free proposal and and he agreed to pay out of pocket any necessary costs needed by the town. On October 10th, 1940, the tax-free Town of Casselberry including parts of Fern Park Estates was officially incorporated and Mr. Casselberry lent his name to the town and served as its first mayor. For many years the town proudly boasted of being tax free. On May 16, 1965 a new governing City Council was created and they levied the first ad valorem property tax in 1976.
