Extremely rude. Won't let you finish your sentence when trying to explain an issue or question. I had to come back in with my ID because the young woman didn't take care of me correctly the first time I came in for a name change, rushing me rudely and obviously annoyed by my presence. I get it's busy. It's also busy at the drive through. And this job probably pays more, and is dealing with PEOPLES LIVES. Show some care, be kind, let us finish our sentences. There's no need to yell at me over and over again when I have a question about the process of how the check in system works. Just answer my question and I'll happily comply. Learn how to differentiate someone being a menace and demanding that you help them immediately, between a little 5'1 woman with a question because she was called in by YOUR office, to come in again since it wasn't done correctly the first time. They lose your documents by saying "we sent them out" and blaming the USPS & then going to blame my apartment building saying that someone might have taken them.. but we have mailboxes. Then they tell me that it's not there fault & ultimately they were sent out but I never received them... WHO is suppose to be held accountable? 2. Service takes tooooo long, and always curious as to why the offices haven't been open to the public yet.. it would save so many problems for people. 3. I walked in to get an appointment to ask about Medicare. The sign said you must sanitize your hands first. I did that and then tapped the machine. It wouldn't work. The. The rude ass attendant proceeded to tell me it wouldn't work because my hands were wet. Sorry sir I just followed the sign and sanitized them with the fluid provided by the machine. We had a wonderful experience at the Evanston office. The security guard was lovely and able to assist me and offered his assistance efficiently. Mr. Mar took all my information and answered all my questions. When my mother started crying, he was very kind and took his time with all her questions. We never felt rushed. Good morning, I'm not the type of person to write in about a bad experience, but I was just yelled at over the phone aggressively by a Mr. Marr and was treated unbelievably disrespectfully. I understand we are all stressed but I felt he wasn't listening to me and demanding information from me that I already had explained I understood. Finally he screamed at me and said I'VE ASKED YOU 3 times, answer or I'll hang up. I listened to what he said but I was fighting back tears and I had to hang up because I was too upset to ask anymore questions. It ruined an already stressful day. Like I said, I know everyone has bad days but no one should be treated with such disrespect and hostility. I also didn't get my questions answered. This office has at least two people who don't know their job, and they are the first ones you encounter. The woman behind the desk is a placeholder who thinks "what's your name" and " have a seat" is the extent of her job. She is incompetent and uninformed. The security guard is a thug. He thinks he's police and orders people around like he's entitled to rudeness and bossiness. He quickly gets out of control and becomes threatening. He followed a woman out of the office yelling at her and I couldn't tell why. The people who actually do ss work for your account are of varying levels of competence. The good news about this office is that is small and intimate. The bad news about it is that people that work here are just plain mean. Will you get things done, sure/maybe? Will workers help you out?They might answer your questions and do the bare minimum but what can you do. I am a firm believer that if you are in the public service domain, try to at least be kind. I made an appointment for 9:00 am via the social security general number. I got there 15 minutes early and did have to wait outside until they opened the doors at 9:00. After checking in at the kiosk, I waited a few minutes and was called to one of the windows. (Also noticed the security guard helped someone in a wheelchair get a number.) This was my first experience with a SS Admin office. I went in to get a new card, as the one I had was 40 years old and I needed a new one. I got there at 8:55 am. There were about 8 people in front of me. They opened the doors promptly at 8:59. The security guard was extremely helpful in directing people to the computer kiosk where you need to sign in. BTW: You can make an appointment, I didn't know that nor did I have one. Once I quickly filled out the prompts on the screen, the security guard told me what form I needed to fill out and directed me right to them. The office staff was FAST! I waited about 6 minutes before I was called. The man who helped me couldn't have been nicer and had a great sense of humor. Decent experience - it's in a strip mall with Walgreens right off of Green Bay Road - passed up Jilly's on my way and got hungry. It's really small but the people working there are overall pretty friendly. Here's a tip - go online and download the form so it makes your experience that much more fluid and quicker. I got there, waited about 15 minutes, turned in my forms - that took a whopping 5 minutes and was out of there and still got to stop by Jilly's on my way back. PLUS I got my new ssn card in less than a week - woohoo! And it was a free service - finally something that is free in the whole wedding/post-wedding world! read more

It's been nine months since I stepped into a Social Security office. For good reason. At the Fairfax location in Virginia, my boyfriend and I waited nearly three hours to be called up to the window (for a replacement card). I misplaced mine during my move. This branch is small, and there was only one window opened on Tuesday morning. There were about a handful of customers, so I only had to wait 15 (!) minutes. You don't hear that every day. Terrible service, slow, poorly trained & unmotivated workers. Many of the workers were unable to communicate clearly. There is a very long wait. The woman who waited on us was very rude & unhelpful. The Social Sec bureau has no way to track or look-up your data or SSN card; which compromises ones security. We had to go to the office and reapply several times because they were unable to send aa card for an existing SSN. This government function should be privatized; the waste is mind boggling. read more

The employees there are unbelievably rude and so out of line. My son has a serious mental illness. After them claiming the signature was not his on the paperwork we brought in one of the employees ripped up his paperwork and accused him of fraud then called the supervisor he proclaimed "you committed fraud and your benefits have been stopped. The advisors in this office are very professional and extremely helpful. Based on my 4-5 visits to this office over the past two years, I'd have given them 5 stars in a heart beat. However, the two reps in the front windows are much less knowledgeable and not very pleasant. Both my husband and I had bad experiences dealing with two different ones a male and a female. The person I spoke with yesterday did not handle my case properly and despite my assurances to him that the advisor I spoke to 3 months prior gave me different information than what he was telling me, he made it sound as if I was lying or misrepresenting the facts. I was so frustrated that I admit I spoke a little bit loudly saying that I was treated unfairly at which time the security officer came over and stood behind me. I mean come on! I am a 65 year old petite woman and I don't think I was threatening in any way. Luckily I left with my issue unresolved and called the SS 800 number. The person I spoke was super helpful and I gave him a 5 in the following survey. He confirmed that the information I provided was accurate unlike what the clerk in the office suggested. read more

When calling numbers, they called out of order skipping from A8 to A12. A woman with A9 went to find out why, when the over-entitled-feeling mall cop stopped her, physically, and told the woman she has to wait her turn. Then the woman at the window who was seeing my friend told her she needed her birth certificate to prove she was a female instead of a male...she's been a female her whole life. Then they wouldn't take her passport that says "F," not "M," even though she obviously needed her birth certificate to revive said passport. Lastly, we asked the woman if there's a way to get your social security card with just a birth certificate, to which they said it is "not a form of identification," even if a parent accompanied the person and a birth certificate. The ONLY way to receive a social security card without a state ID or driver's license is a certified doctor's statement. This place is unreal. read more

I went there to apply SSN last week, but experienced a computer system down. The officer photocopied all my documents and said she will do the application and mail me the reference number. One week passed and no mail was sent to me. So I call their hotline; the receiver checked that they don't have my application at all. The possible reason I am being told is that they might toss away my document copies. I don't understand how that happens. I need to go there again. Waste of my time. Terrible experience. read more

Oh boy, this place is really miserable. This is the third time I have been to try and sort out my son's social security and I just had to write about my experience today. The past two visits were also unproductive and I was treated tersely and with disregard. This time however, I was determined. I went in and got my number from the kiosk and waited patiently while they called many people whose numbers we after mine and had arrived after me (about 40 minutes). There is a sign that says to be aware that they may not call numbers in order since they have different issues. I had never left my seat the whole time. Finally I got up and asked about it. The security guard said they missed my number, and this is where it get's interesting. The woman that was waiting on people at the main window (young, blonde maybe in her thirties), just kept barking a number that was well beyond mine and insisting that she was on that number. I turn to the guard and ask if they could just take me next and he told me no, that I would indeed have to get a new number from the kisok and wait again for my turn... Needless to say, I left at that point. I will just try another office... but this is rediculous, their mistake and I get to pay. read more

This is my third time visiting this Great Government office. The office is clean and neat and the security guard is very efficient in controlling work flow and prevent unsafe overcrowded area. The supervisor Ms Gonzeles is very professional in handling difficult customers. It seems the security guard has the ability to give individual customized care for each customer. The case worker is very polite and answer my questions with smile ! I hope in the future this office will give priority care for disable customers and senior over 80 years old. I was here (at the Evanston Greenbay road SSA office) today (28-Aug-2014) at 3.20 pm and saw the revised timings displayed for the office that they are open only till 3 pm (and not until 4 pm as displayed on several websites). I did try calling to confirm before I drove from home but was not successful in reaching an operator. I have requested the web master on Yelp to update the timings for weekdays as 9 to 3 pm except on Wednesdays when they close at noon read more

I was there to report a death and felt the anger seeping out from the employees from start to finish. Even the security guard was unpleasant and rude. Even though I live in Rogers Park, I decided to go to the Evanston location because I figured it would be faster. I was right! I arrived at around 10:10 and was out by 10:30. My experience today was just fine. When I walked in at 11:55, the waiting area had all seats filled except two. The room guard was perfunctory but helpful, pointing out the ticket machine for getting "into the line". The wait for me was about :45 min.
