I liked the food here although it's not the best Korean food I've had. One being the limited selection of side dishes, which is an important part of Korean cuisine! We didn't get anywhere near the variety of side dishes offered in restaurants in LA. Instead, there was only 3 small side dishes of pickled radish, kimchi and bean sprouts...quite a disappointment way to start a meal. We had the veggie bibimbap and the beef with noodles. The bibimbap was nicely cooked in a stone pot and it was sizzling hot when it arrived at the table. I liked all the vegetables in there. The beef with noodles dish was mediocre and it was missing some seasoning. Overall, Soban serves good quality Korean food in the middle of Heidelberg. Absolute and definitively the BEST and most authentic Yukgaejang I've had, counting and taking in consideration of Korea and LA!!! Honestly, it was probably best I've had so far!!! Being Korean and being picky about its authentic taste and content, i didnt expect much from this little place which seemed to cater to the local tourists. One who craves Korean will not be disappointed with Soban. I had discovered Soban years earlier in Mannheim, and Soban (II) in Heidelberg is pretty much the same (ambience-wise, quality-wise, price-wise). Even though the restaurant is bigger than the establishment in Mannheim, it was almost packed when we went on a Tuesday evening. Therefore, best to make a reservation if you want to go there without wait. The bright lighting, wall painting of Asian art, and clean tables give Soban a modern feel. The selection is good, ranging from standard pancakes, mandu (dumplings), bulgogi, japchae, etc. While the banchan (complimentary side dishes) is minimal, basic, and the same everytime, the main dishes are great. The pancakes are cooked nicely, and I love beef and the sauces in the japchae. The prices are very reasonable. My only complaint is the hit-and-miss service. We ordered kimchi pancakes as a starter, and we got it along with our main dishes although the food came fast. We also waited a long time (to the point where the restaurant was practically empty) before we could get additional drinks or the bill while the server was just standing behind the counter, not paying attention and checking the phone. But I can put up with that if that means I can get a good and reasonably-priced Korean meal. read more

(2015-2018, about 20 times, 2-4 people) In total Soban might be one of the best restaurants I know. What a gem for Heidelberg. It is delicious, offers a variety of tastes and is relatively cheap. Solid Korean! As other reviewers have noted, the side dishes are really minimal, but those that they have are quite good. The kimchi is also quite fresh (at least when we went), though I prefer kimchi that is more fermented. The taste is just not the same! But I got SoonDubu Jigae and that was done well. So if you've got a craving for Korean, this should do. read more

This Korean restaurant is located directly across from the funicular rail station in Heidelberg. There are Korean flags and Hangul used to draw attention to the fact that it is, in fact, Korean. Atmosphere: We stopped in for lunch on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The restaurant was about half full and the arrangement is such that the tables and chairs impinge somewhat on each other because of the shape of the interior being more trapezoidal than square. For some unknown reason, after our party of 3 sat down at a table for 4, the waitress added an unneeded chair to the end of the table shoving it underneath directly into my foot, ankle, leg, and knee. Service: Korean. They pretty much won't acknowledge you until you call them. I was dining with a Korean, which helped, as even though I am fairly proficient in the language they kept trying to use German or English with me. Food: We got 2 orders of fried mandu (dumplings) with, I think, pork in them as well as 2 orders of yukgyejang, a spicy beef, vegetable, and noodle stew that is a Korean adaptation of some Chinese dish or another. The fried mandu was as expected, either pre-packaged frozen or commercially formed and then fried. Either way, it was good, fried perfectly and presented with a seasoned soy sauce for dipping. The yukgyejang was somewhat disappointing. Although more flavorful and with more meat than my last yukgyejang fiasco in a Korean restaurant outside of Korea, there was just something...off...about it. I don't know if it was too much of the veggies or the proportion of the ingredients, but after about 1/3 of the bowl I just didn't feel like finishing it. The Korean in our party who also ordered it felt the same way but also couldn't exactly say why. It was served extremely hot - even too hot compared to the boiling heat Koreans usually like their stews and soups served at. Overall: The whole restaurant appears to be focused on the Korean tourist trade in the area. It's not bad Korean food, and, being only 1 hour from where I live, I would probably even drive back to have it again, however, I will not be having the yukgyejang again. (Even though my initial tip was "get the yukgyejang" posted after seeing my dish but not yet trying it.) read more

A place that is full must be good, let me tell a story of going Korean for a meal, we did takeout, which could be very different to dining in. Arriving at the restaurant and all signs are good, walls well decorated with brick type look clean, busy and a good dining atmosphere, and service quick and attentive, we collected our takeout upon getting home we plated the five dishes we ordered and shared amongst our group, dishes where large and plenty to go around so a big plus on dish size, however dishes where not refined or organized like a Korean dish they lacked the finesse that's common in Korean restaurants, rice was over cooked and noodles slippery/slimy from cooking too long. Dumplings where good and well seasoned and the beef sushi roll was ok. Dishes overall had flavor but a flavor that could be achieved at home easily with few ingredients. Dishes though said had beef and pork with them seemed to be non existent. Overall impression of the care taken with the food is low and I probably would not return for a dine in experience based on the quality given for a take out. read more
