Until I found Soap Bar, I had been going round…read moresupermarkets and bottle shops like a hobo begging for them to exchange notes for $1 coins and pretending not to notice 'DO NOT ASK FOR CHANGE FOR LAUNDROMAT AS REFUSAL MAY OFFEND'. Sometimes the manager at IGA would help out a brother with some coin because I regularly do the family shopping there. But he would tsk tsk and remark that the laundromat should get their own change machine. Once I got enough coins, I would try to negotiate the faulty coin collectors at the laundromat (some machines only took $1s, others only $2s -- but for some reason the lady who owned the place never put up any signs labeling which was which. I think she might have made a tidy side business in stuck coins.) Once my clothes were washed I'd sometimes be pulling them out of the machine only to find my hands coated in sticky soap paste -- yep, that's right, the machine washed so poorly it didn't even move the soap from its original point of deposit into the clothes. Words similar to 'sit' and 'puck' would be muttered under my breath. Of course there was nowhere to rinse your hands. Then I found Soap Bar. The machines are not only cheaper than the rubbish laundromat ($3 per load -- Though the smallest machines are double load, so $6 minimum investment), the equipment is all brand new. And the owners care about graphic design and ambience: the massive mirrored chrome '50s-style 'automatic' sign is a beauty to behold. AND THERE IS A FRICKING CHANGE MACHINE THAT WORKS!! And, even more amazingly, should you not have come even packing notes, there is an ATM. And EVEN more amazingly, if you are totes gen-Y or Z or whatever we're up to now, you can pay for the machines with Paypal. FRICKIN PAYPAL. The machines are all IP, baby. Oh. And there is an air hockey table. And Jenga blocks to play with if they are your thing. There is an 'honesty bar' of soap powder you can scoop out at will for a coin drop of $1 -- no fixed (or policed, anyway) quantity. AND THERE IS FREE WIFI SO YOU CAN NETFLIX AND CHILL* WHILE YOUR WASHING IS GOING WITHOUT BLOWING YOUR DATA PLAN. * Chill in yr he strictly platonic laundromatic plain English sense And there is a sign up indicating that a waffle and coffee cafe will be coming soon at the front of the laundromat. And there is a TAP and a HAND DRYER for those soap exposure moments. Never. Going. Anywhere. Else.

Also some chairs and stools to hang out on with several copies of the Melbourne visitors guide book and some maps to peruse while waiting for my clothes to dry. There were plenty of washers and dryers. The employee also let me know that my cloths would fit into a smaller washer just fine. She also loaned me the key to a nearby bathroom for customers only. I went in the middle of the day and had no issues waiting for machines. Great little place right by Spencer Outlet so I shopped while I waited for the washing machine to be done. It's not clear how a dry clean drop off can be done self service, or why they were picking up the phone if there were no staff available. Really poor and won't be going back.

When I went there today, the owner was there, and he was very friendly and helpful. He gave me some advice on the best machines for me to use, and the optimal settings. Also, there is a coin machine on site, which the other laundromats nearby don't have. In addition to this, the owner said that he had washing powder for sale if I needed it, and he's looking at getting a washing powder dispenser installed soon, which is convenient if you're a forgetful person like me and you tend to leave your laundry soap at home when you go to the laundromat! Even though there are two laundromats closer to where I live, I'm going to travel to this one from now on because it is so much better. Thanks!

A big plus for me is that the staff there care about the place. All in all if you have to wait for a washing machine, you may as well wait somewhere nice like Green Laundry@Cafe. Wrong…read more Urban Laundry was a ray of bright light in a dreary Melbourne winter for me a couple of years ago and I will be forever grateful. Living in a cold, damp, 140-year-old rental property up the road, I was forced to venture out into laundrette territory in order to get my clothes dry. I tried a few places and was invariably left cold. The coin machines would be broken, or someone's laid a turd in the corner. Then I found Urban Laundry in North Fitzroy and my laundry drying experiences became tolerable again, you could say I even looked forward to them. They have an actual person here, and a change machine, and they will sell you powder, and it's well lit, and it's clean, and the driers are huge, and they are cheap. This place is the best laundromat I've ever visited and I kind of miss it now that I have a dry, newer house. Dang.
