Food so krep, service so krap. This creperie has been on my try-list for quite some time. Why? I love crepes and galettes, it's in the centre, it boasts a student menu for 10 euros.
The central location is easily accessible, thanks to being right next to the cathedral and the tram stop Notre dame musée. The orange exterior draws you in, as do the offer panels outside. Our original intention was to come for breakfast at 10am, and we arrived just as the staff were putting out the signs. The slightly cutting response was "no, not open until 11.30". Okay, cool, we decided to walk around town for a bit to work up an appetite. After browsing the shops, we came back 5 minutes before opening time. The lady who had sent us away before still seemed reluctant to let us in until the exact opening time, though she eventually gave in.
The menu was pretty complete for a creperie, featuring galettes, crepes, and salads for the people who prefer that kind of thing. The goats cheese galette and salted caramel crepe stood out at me, but seeing the prices I realized I would have to make a decision. The student deal, 10 euros for a galette and crepe, seemed pretty good. For that you get a crepe complète and a crepe beurre sucre or fromage blanc with blueberry or raspberry jam. It turned out that the crepe complète was a combo of ham, cheese and egg... Being vegetarian, I asked whether they could omit the ham and instead put salted caramel in the crepe. The answer was "no, you can omit ingredients but not add them for the student meal". My friend asked whether he could swap the ham for onions and got the same response. So, omit the most expensive ingredient due to ethical reasons/personal beliefs and you still pay the same price. Not great customer service. The original cutting lady reappeared to inform us that we only got the discount if we showed our student card. Sometimes, it would be way more profitable for a business to risk losing out on little things like making modifications to the menu than just treating customers like opportunists. It would have been way more likely that we payed another visit.
So, one friend opted for the student menu omitting the ham and paying the same price, the other friend and I chose the apples compote and salted caramel filling. I was very jealous of the one eating the galette when it arrived. I had a taste, and it was filling and tasty. By comparison, my crepe was sparsely filled and a little limp. The salted caramel wasn't salty enough and for 8.50 euros, it was a little bit of a rip off. Desserts should cost less than mains, but this is not the case at so krep.
Overall, nice food ruined by exaggeratedly inflated prices, cosy interior if not ruined by the attitude of one of the staff members (potentially the manager). The customer is always right, but apparently not at so krep. read more
