You can either start south of the Fortress, just by the Bohusbron Bridge (there's a parking lot, 4 hours free) or north of the Fortress at the Ställplats - Husbil Camping and Parking lot (fees apply). The walk along the water and around the Fortress is quite short, but very nice. Sheep roam around free here, so please be respectful of their territory. Dogs are allowed though. There's a bunch of benches with nice views and some water access in case your furry friend needs a quick dip (ours did). If you are visiting the Fortress, be sure not to miss out on this little walk. Not enough words can be used to describe the natural wonders of Bohuslän coast, Marstrand island is…read morethe fairest of them all. Knowing it's a short 45-minute scenic drive from Gothenburg, we jumped at the opportunity to make a day trip, and what a glorious day it was. Carlsteen Fortress, along with boating culture and royal history, is what Marstrand is known for. The massive stone fortress sits atop the rocky island. It took more than 200 years to build, and was in use by the military as recent as 1990's. A guided tour is highly recommended so you can learn other fascinating stories about this fortress. Give yourself plenty of time to explore, as they are many rooms to check out and lots of climbing. The roof-top view is magnificent, those white and pastel blue, yellow, green wooden buildings start at the sea level and climb up towards the Fortress. During sailing season, imagine a view of hundreds of yachts taking part in the many international regattas here. If you happen to chat with a local (they are friendly), they are very proud of their boat (usually. boats). A must-visit. Bring you camera. This place is as pretty-as-a-postcard.

My…read moreguide and I stopped by on our way to Marstrand Island, (gorgeous!), so I only saw the fortress from the parking lot. From what I saw it was massive and parts of the stones were taken to build homes surrounding the area before they decided to preserve the history. If I ever find myself here again I would take more time to explore.

The museum was also interesting. There is a wonderful gift shop and cafe also. The drive to this place is a pleasant and relaxing. We came beginning of April very few people and little traffic.

The shop at the museum is lovely, and the staff offer practical advice about visiting the various spots with carvings. Seeing the carvings is really fascinating!

We stayed nearby this area for a couple of days and really felt like walking that day. We parked on…read moreDrottninggatan close to the harbourfront. From there we entered the Reserve from the North (near the Marina). As soon as you go around the corner from the Marina you'll be quite surprised. You wouldn't expect such an impressive Reserve so close to a town. It's really just around the corner but feels like another world. The views are amazing and the rocks and rock formations impressive. We brought our dog with (an English Bulldog). She did amazingly well. Just at the very beginning on the Northern Entrance a few steps leading up were too big and steep, so we carried her quick. Later on there's an easy trail leading back to town. Or you can follow a tougher route (sometimes no route at all) leading towards the famous Fyrhuset. We had fun exploring the area as did our dog. Nice views and nature and it was just fun climbing around here. Sometimes taking a break - sitting on some rocks - to take in the amazing landscape. If you only need to park up to 4 hours, then there's a free parking lot just south of the Gullmarsgymnasiet. If you are around this area - even an hour or two away - be sure not to miss out on this terrific Nature Reserve.
