So after a Yelp Gets Physical and the ease of location, I decided City Surf Fitness was going to be…read morewhat got my "slingshots" (as my loving, eternal +1 calls my biceps) into some toned muscle and get back into living a more healthy lifestyle. My workout preference is one that doesn't feel like working out, i.e. volleyball, kayaking, dancing on pool tables. Those sort of things. So I'm not a yoga, pilates, "lets really think about this stretch" sort-of-exerciser. I'm also horrible at a gym membership 'cause no one is going to crack the whip on me to go there if it's not intentionally put on my schedule. I think City Surf is the perfect fit for me in this regard. I'm not an early bird, and they have classes that fit for my schedule at 8:30 am, and if I book, I'm committed to going. The two classes I really like are Beach Body Bootcamp* and City Surf*. IF you are a yoga type, or want to do more muscle-building, they have other courses and you can get a sneak peek of what they look like on their site if you want to set expectations. Each person in the class is assigned a surf board that is on top of three fitness balls. It's not as unbalanced as a real surfboard might be in the water but still takes a second to master some of the moves on top of the board. My balance was for shiz at first, but I can tell even from my last couple of classes, that it's improving. The classes are only 50 minutes long, and like their mantra says, it really is a no pressure environment. While you are in a class, it's really easy to focus on what you're doing and the instructor is there more so to guide you through the workout. There's no calling anyone out if you get winded (which I do), slow your pace, or need to adjust what you're doing. The music is great to workout to, and at the end you get a nice cooling towel placed on you face (I'm totally into it). You do need grippy socks (which they sell) for the boards, and I would suggest if you have sweaty palms (like this lady) maybe also get some grippy gloves so you can properly do the exercises. I like that I'm sore in places I never knew I could be sore, but not so sore that it's debilitating. If you think the classes are a little pricey they do have some great introductory rates, and they'll throw a deal out there every now and then. I am excited to work up to pea shooters from my current state of slingshots, and see where I can go from there! ;) Beach Body Bootcamp - Cardio based class designed to make you sweat and burn calories. City Surf - Their signature class featuring surf inspired movements utilizing surfer specific muscle groups.

He is very proactive and responsive with scheduling sessions. He consistently pushed me to work harder in our sessions - I was able to bench/squat/deadlift way more weight than I expected. I felt confident pushing harder and going to failure on the sets because he was there to help if I got stuck during the lift. Eduardo also gave me great advice on nutrition, supplements, and equipment to help with training. When I sprained my ankle, Eduardo adjusted our sessions to accommodate it. We switched to circuit-style training and I still made strength progress and beat my one-rep max weights. Eduardo is also very pleasant to talk with and I appreciate learning about his vast experience in the world of strength training and body building. I would recommend anyone to work with him to reach their goals!

My journey began when I finally couldn't stand the arthritis pain in my knees that was keeping me from doing anything fun, sometimes even just getting off the couch. I'd fallen a couple of times and had no energy. By a pure miracle, I walked into Anytime Fitness Freret, and met Eric Capers, head trainer and owner of Pro Fitness Trainers. Eric is a physical therapist as well as a personal trainer, and I trusted that he had the knowledge I needed to make progress without injury, so I signed on. Little by little, learning every day, I got stronger, restored my balance, and was able to walk longer distances. Four years later, by consistent work, paying attention to food (not starving, not stuffing), I have lost 40 pounds, dropped my LDL cholesterol by 45 points, walked in three 5k events and the Crescent City Classic 10k (what????) and my doctor says I've added at least five years to my life. I'm 75 now, planning on lots more. If you've been thinking about it, putting it off, getting down on yourself, call Eric and get a free fitness assessment. You can't go wrong. My dislike wasn't just because of the awkwardness everyone experiences during the first class (though admittedly, I felt like I sucked at everything at first, heh). It was because I considered the prices for regular classes to be pretty steep for a class that doesn't even last an hour. Not to mention the Pure Barre branded stuff everywhere (which of course is typical of any gym franchise), the cheesy pop music and the fact that the stretching didn't seem to be enough (you can stretch on your own, obviously). I thought it was really just a glorified exercise class that you can get anywhere and didn't really see what the fuss was. And now after 10 classes, I'm hooked on the burn. They say that it takes about 3 classes to get the precision of the moves down (think tiny, intense movements) and that's about right. Now, I find myself doing these exercises just about anywhere. It's strangely addictive to clench your muscles like this. It's a fast, intense workout. Time may seem to stand still as your muscles are shaking, yet it goes by so rapidly that the class is over in the blink of an eye. You may feel that it's so fast that surely this isn't enough of a workout and what the hell did you just spend 25 bucks a class for? But it is. It's a great way to tone that body up (though you'd definitely want to supplement the workout with cardiovascular exercises to keep yourself in tip top shape). People liken it to a combination of yoga, pilates and ballet. I actually don't really see anything too much in common with yoga. Ballet, absolutely, for you're standing at a barre doing pliés which totally kill your thighs. I've never taken pilates before, so I can't remark on that. The teachers are great overall, and of course you will like some more than others. I tend to prefer the teachers that give you some kind of countdown and verbal encouragement throughout. Once the teacher becomes silent, people are more apt to rest, which you don't want to do b/c working the muscles to fatigue is kind of the point (and many will tell you this). Other good stuff: the studio is spotless, fans are plentiful, and the staff is nice. FYI, the price goes down if you buy 5, 10, and 20 sessions at a time. I just bought my next 10 classes. This is a great supplement to yoga and cardio workouts. I yearn for a gym in this city that offers both good classes and equipment, but until there is, I'll be working out at my bare bones gym, Pure Barre and various yoga studios When you compare Pure Barre to yoga, the price is kind of astronomical. (At Life yoga, 90 minute classes as low as 8-10 dollars a pop) but they do have promotional specials and in March, if you take 20 classes you are eligible for a month of unlimited at 100.00, which is pretty sweet.
