We go to their Christmas performance every year (and virtually once upon a time) and it never disappoints. Leaves everyone young and old with a smile on their face. An absolutely delightful way to spend an evening with family.

I'm the worst part time professional ballet dancer in America, but I do know a little something about ballet...and I do know that Smuin Ballet is exceptional, energetic, and exciting. I honestly really wanted to see San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker...but having performed in Nutcracker for the past 16 years, and having seen many other Nutcrackers, I opted to see Smuin's Christmas Ballet instead...a show that is refreshing and innovative. And it was a lot cheaper! Act 1 was more classical choreography but still unique and innovative. The pas de deux pieces are creative and breathtaking, and executed with near perfection, but... Act 2 is where is where all the fun is: modern and contemporary choreography set to modern and contemporary music hits: Santa Baby, Blue Christmas, Rocking Around the Christmas Tree, and more popular hits. The adept and agile ballerinas seemed to infused with limitless energy as they gracefully and effortlessly danced. My 3rd grade level writing skills can't capture the enchanting beauty of all this art...go see for yourself.

We found discounted tickets on Travelzoo and decided to check it out at the Mountain View performance. We've seen both traditional ballet like Nutcracker as well as modern shows so we're curious what this would be like. The first half was more traditional with normal ballet wear and orchestra music but the second part was contemporary with fun, modern versions of everyone's Christmas favorites. The dancers were super diverse and absolutely talented. The cafe on site served decent chai and lemon tart as well.

The perfect thing to kick me out of my fugue-like state.. Speechless and on a total high, having just come back from a *spectacular* spring show.... the passion and emotion of music, with the lyrics being the dancers and their movements, their lines, expressions....definitely transported and forgot about any earthly woes. Irenic in, weltschmerz out as I sat second row, mesmerized by the precision, the strength, and the cohesiveness and choreography to everything from Mozart's (grew up playing lots of his piano compositions) Requiem, to a melange of Beatles melodies (plangent and light-hearted). I got great classical ballet, modern dance, and yep... even tap! What is so enjoyable about fine arts for me is the gamut of emotions displayed, everything from romantic love, to hope, fear, anger, bliss. As like a symphony, capitulation usually comes in the end of any work. 3 parts, 2 intermissions... the first one surprisingly just about 10 minutes into the program. Show in SF performed at YBCA's Novellus...if you're a freak and walk/run to BART and sit as close to the exit as I, you can catch the 2218 train... but you and your hiney are gonna break a little fine sweat! Awesome self date for a Wed. night.

This weekend marked our 2nd XXMas Ballet event & our 3rd time seeing these amazing performers at Smuin Ballet Dividing up the show into "Classical" & "Cool" acts, we're treated to traditional ballet numbers celebrating the holiday season to those swing & pop songs we all know & hold a special place in our hearts for..... The troupe is extremely well-choreographed & coordinated, in the sense that they all seem to move as one unit We all have seen shows where each dancer seems to be doing their own thing & it really detracts from the performance......not here! These dancers are so graceful, fluid & no matter how many are on the stage, there seems to be a sense of 1 ebb & flow & that takes talent!! Fun costumes ranging from the all-white-with-a-bit-of-sparkle to the colorfully-all-sequined-and-bejewled.....you'll find yourself completely awed & wishing you could see them immediately all over again

my lil niece enjoys the show a lot.

************* REVIEW 272 **************** I took my nieces to see Smuin Ballet, Fall Program at the Palace of Fine Arts last week. It was such a nice show. Beautiful dancers, everyone was synchronized, on point, rhythm, & perfect. There was 3 sessions, each about 20 minutes, and intermission 15 minutes between sessions. My nieces got to get up, stretch, and got their sweet fix. 1st Session: Brahmas-Haydn Variations by Michael Smuin - This was 8 variations, more classical, beautiful played. This was premier back in 1996. My favorite, because I've been a ballet student for 10 years when I was younger, I always prefer classic, that's just me! 2nd Session: Oh, Inverted World by Trey McIntyre - This was 8 variations, premiered first time in OCT 1, 2010 - this was my nieces favorite parts of all 3 sessions - more modern, funny, more stories telling, & definite more eyes candy for me because all the male dancers were in the boxer! Forget about 6 packs, let's see 8-12 packs! Oh my my! 3rd Session: Bluegrass/Slyde by Michael Smuin - This was 7 smaller sessions - all dressed in black tanks & leggings. Modern styles, a lot to do with the metal frame structures, poll dancing & etc. I was worried that my 6 years old nice would snoring away, but to my surprise, she stayed awake & enjoyed it quite a bit! For only $25-$60 a ticket, this definitely a lot better than to a movie theater & my nieces got more cultured, can't get any better than this! Great Fall program, highly recommend it to all.

I did two separate purchases with blind seating, we added a fourth person later, it was not possible to select seating purchasing blind. We were completely ok sitting separately. Day of when ticket email came and seats were viewable all seating had been placed together which was REALLLLLLLY appreciated and not expected!! The theater is old, and stunning all the details in the architecture. Due to its age the seating is not elevated which is NO current fault. However it did cause all spectators to move their heads around to see the production. The row above us was empty we ended up climbing up a row in order to see. When I book again I won't book blindly and will select my seats. The production was cast WELL!!!! Chemistry isn't always evident among theater cast, it was present here.. Very present!!! The sound system was pretty good; I heard most of everything that was said on stage, but whatever I missed can be blamed on my hearing, not their sound system! Seats were relatively comfortable and the legroom was at par with other theaters. The bathrooms, which were not separated for men and women, were clean with seat covers and plenty of toilet paper. It was a bit strange seeing men walk out of the stalls in the bathroom, but it didn't bother me. I would really prefer that the seat is returned to a downward position, though, and happy the floor was dry!

I went to see a show " Italiani Veri "  last night. Fabulous cabaret-type show with performer Arianna. She's a true (veri) Italian from Milan who sang, danced and explained Italian culture as part of the entertainment. She has an amazing voice! She could have been a finalist at the San Remo Music Festival - the most famous singing festival in Italy. She fessed up saying she had been an Italian Mouseketeer! The venue has a bar/lounge to enjoy cocktails then a few steps down further is the theater. You need to be mobile since there are a lot of steps. Seating is first come-first serve. Ambiance - After getting your tickets from the ticket booth, you go down a sharp flight of stairs which dumps you out into a bar area with two large doors on both sides of the room. The room on the right-hand side is where they have stand-up comedy (Cheaper than Therapy), and the left hand side is where the Improv show takes place. You wait in the bar area until the doors open. Once you enter, there are a handful of rows of chairs (barstool style with backs) and it's general admission. It's a pretty cozy area, maybe fitting around 50 people or so if I had to guess. Before the show, one of the improv team members came around offering Oreos to guests. We did not partake, but if you like Oreos you're in for a treat. The show itself was great. There were four improv comedians and they took a bunch of crowd suggestions and tailor-made a show based around our suggestions. The show itself is about an hour and a half, but didn't feel like it was that long at all. When it ended, I was shocked that an hour and a half had passed already. Time truly does fly when you're having a great time! I would definitely return again as we had a blast and really enjoyed the quick wit the improv team had to offer. The venue seemed a bit disorganized, opening a few minutes after the stated time, both for VIPs and regular patrons. The refreshments bar was not fully set up, and one could see that they were rushing to get it done, making their patrons wait (suggestion, start your prep earlier). Delays by staff during a VIP experience, takes away from the time there, which costs a premium. You show your appreciation for your audience by how you treat their time. Later the meet and greet we attended but got started late, then the entry into the seating ran about 20 mins late, one staffer saying they were still setting up the lighting. Seriously? How long does it take to set six lights shining on curtains for two people in chairs? Having just finished a week on stage crew at a venue in Sacramento, there is no need to "run late" (suggestion, start your prep earlier). The times listed for the event did not have a reliable seating/entry into the actual theater but they made sure we all knew when to pick up the items we had already picked up in our VIP experience. Finally, I thought that having the ladies' restroom door set so you could see them going in and out of the stalls, including some feet/legs while doing their business was tacky. On the upside, the seats were very nice and we found parking nearby. The setting outside was amazing as when I volunteered there when it was the Exploratorium.
