We have loved this Smith's for a long time and go there a lot. We have always had a great experience every time but this New Year's Eve was very different. I walked in late after my friends had already gone in and a guy who seemed to work there politely directed me in the direction they had went without being asked. Minutes later he approached us and began accusing us of being obnoxious when we were just trying to get some Jello. He then proceeded to call my friends and I 4 year olds and curse at us which was very inappropriate considering our age. Even if our behavior was inappropriate, it is never appropriate to curse at a child. During this whole thing, a lady working there was apologizing for the guy and being very kind. I have a program with my health insurance company that give me $50 for food any month. I never had a physical card. I've never needed one. It's been accepted with three different stores, including this one for months. This time, the cashier, Serena refused to accept it because it was on my phone instead of a physical card. The manager, Jeanette, got involved and told me they wouldn't accept it because they have had too many scams. I tried to explain the situation and she finally just turned and walked off. Given that your key purpose is to make money, this location has a despicable lack of being in stock. The Store Manager should be fired. Every single time I try to shop here they are out of stock. I can't even count how often they are out of propane. Here's an idea, expand the amount of propane and just don't run out. It's not that hard. This Smith's is just a few blocks from our house, and of all of the SMith's I have gone to, this is my favorite. The employees are really nice, and I think they have a great selection of food. There are plenty of options, but not so many it's overwhelming (like Harmon's). The prices are also great, and they are constantly have sales. I appreciate the 99 cent bags of produce they fill with apples, potatoes, and other slightly misshapen goods as it helps eliminate food waste and save shoppers money! I frequent this Smiths about 5-6 times a week...sometimes more if I forget an ingredient for dinner. (I live in the neighborhood, so no judgements, okay?) A few pros: Smith's has a great discount meat section- 2 lb ribeyes for $8 a pop or other great deals. And an easy one stop miscellaneous discount area by the Customer Service counter. It's really nice of them to put all their severely discounted products in one table so you can pick up that half off Brita filter you've been meaning to buy for a few weeks now...or months (look, we agreed, this is a no judgement zone!) It's also relatively clean and festive but that's a given considering this is a grocery store. Another pro: A liquor store is just right below next to a nail salon. Only one con which is: No security. There are panhandlers that like to loiter about which is fine but on occasion, when I am walking out the doors with my arms full of groceries, I have been followed by a couple of guys who say I clearly have enough and should share. This is not ideal. To be honest, it's a little frightening. I wish they would have security for these situations. Since there isn't, just bring a rape whistle/boy/dog with you and I'm sure it'll help. read more

They don't accept Apple Pay and now have stopped accepting Visa. Go to Harmon's. It's a nicer store, they have better customer service, they care about customer convenience, they accept Apple Pay, Google pay... and yes even visa. This Smith's is terrible. It's so dirty - dirty carts, dirty self-checkouts, dirty refrigerated doors/handles, filthy parking lot, never any wipes available to clean/sanitize yourself. The store is never stocked, and poorly managed. The employees stand around talking and ignore customers and any work that needs to be done (and there is allot). Harmons or Trader Joes or any other Smiths is a better option. The location is great and if this were to improve it could be the best grocery store in the area. read more

I'm amazed that a major store like Smith's would go to this electronic coupon strategy because it is really no consumer friendly. You can get great discounts but you have to open you app at the store, type in every item with a digital coupon, add it to use at checkout. It added at least 30 minutes to my shopping for about $30 in savings then the coupons disappeared when I got to the check out. I was not given ANY option except go back and manually add every coupon. read more

You know, I wasn't expecting to do a lot of my shopping at Smith's, being the health conscious foodie freak you all know and love. But it's walking distance from my house and easy to get to for those one or two things you need to get to prepare dinner. So I looked around a bit and you know what? They have grass fed beef! Organic produce! BPA-free water bottles! Not only that, they have some really friendly, helpful employees, especially in the pharmacy department. It is the only place I know of that accepts plastic bags for recycling. And I usually enjoy the music they play, with the notable exception of the "take me to tortilla land" jingle. The little dining area offers a view of the parking lot which is useful when waiting for people, but it's pretty filthy top to bottom. Tends to be more expensive than other Smiths. Walmart is always a tad cheaper but when I need just a few things and not a weeks worth I save time and gas and hit up Smiths. Over the last 10 years that I've been shopping here, I've asked the different department managers to order items that they usually do not carry. I consider this Smiths a well hidden secret in the Downtown & Central City area of SLC. It's located in an otherwise very residential area that you would not expect to find such a large retailer in. It's a very refreshing calm option compared to the location on 4th South. The store has very recently had its exterior/interior decor refreshed. This makes sure it's an up to date shopping experience. The produce seems to be very well stocked and often the stuff they have is so fresh it needs 48 hrs to ripen. They have a good selection of ready made dishes and the about to expire ones are always on clearance for a quite a discount. One downside is I have a hard time finding as many of their Kroger store brand items as some of the larger locations. If you're a store branded items shopper you're better off at the 4th South location. If you're looking for a well stocked grocery without the odd people that frequent the ones in the 4th South area this is the place to go. And while you're there, don't forget there's a State Liquor Store below the store accessed off of E or F streets. You'll need some Sangria to put that chopped up fresh fruit in! read more

I lurve this Smith's for the pure fact that you can shop for liquor downstairs at the state liquor store and then ride the elevator upstairs for mixers and snack items. It's one stop shopping. This our neighborhood Smith's, and we used to love it. Unfortunately this Smith's has replaced most of their check-out stands with self check-out. There is now a Scan and Go, where you scan and bag all your groceries as you shop, and pay at the end...which takes forever! It makes a regular trip to the grocery store last twice as long. They have 8 self check-out stands, and now only 4 regular check-out stands, and generally only 1 is open. So if you have a cart full of a week's worth of groceries, you will most likely spend 15-30 min trying to check out and bag everything yourself. Harmon's costs more, but at least every check out stand has a person to scan your items and a bagger. There is something to be said about actual customer service, and this Smith's is currently failing miserably. read more

It's my local, so I shop there all the time. The people who work there are awesome, really friendly and seem happy. The produce is good quality - although all three coconuts I've gotten from Smith's were bad, I'm happy with Smith's overall. However, aside from the coconuts, I have one complaint: Their bakery needs help. Their bagels are not really bagels, they're donut-shaped bread. Bagels are boiled prior to baking, should be heavy for a baked good of it's size. Their bagels aren't that, they're not dense and chewy inside, they're light and puffy. For that matter, I'm pretty sure it's the same dough recipe and similar process as when they make their hamburger buns. Which, I have to say, are also not great: puffy, light, not something that can be used to hold a hamburger. Smith's seems to re-use the same dough recipe for many items that shoudn't be light or puffy. Smith's really needs to review its own processes for making some of the staple baked goods. I don't care about cakes and cookies, I like good bagels and good bread made correctly. If Smith's works on getting those right, it will pay off. read more

Since moving up to the Avenues we have used the store quite a bit. During the pandemic it has really been a lifesaver. They have pretty much everything you need in terms of groceries and nothing extraneous. The delivery service and curbside pick up options are very nice. You walk into the store and see familiar faces at work there every day. Granted it is a large chain store but it fits right in the community and they are very friendly with folks. Great store for it's location. Totally did not expect this to be in the Aves! It's very classy, and always sparkling clean! The staff is friendly, and there is a pretty good selection for what you'd expect from this neighborhood. I like that they decorate it to go along with the season. I'm not a drinker anymore, but when I was, I loved that there was a full liquor store connected to this location (it's still nice though for cooking wines and whatnot). FAILURE TO SANITIZE CARTS OR BASKETS. Until today Smith's in the Avenues had been our go to grocery store. Not any more. Unlike many of their competitors their employees tell me Smith's does not sanitize their carts or baskets any more. With another Covid spike on the horizon this failure to provide clean and sanitized carts and baskets is unacceptable to me and my family and as a result we will no longer shop at Smith's as long as healthier and more responsible alternatives exist. read more

Very convenient Smith's grocery tucked away in the avenues. I love that it's in a residential area so a lot of patrons just walk there, and it's a lot less crowded and hectic than the one downtown on 4th south. Well stocked, except for the butcher/fresh meat selection. Very small selection and no lamb to my dismay. But I'm not sure that the downtown location has lamb either? Oh well, I'll still have to make a trip to Whole Foods or Liberty Heights for my specialty items. Also note that they don't carry all of the extra items that the Smith's downtown does (basically anything upstairs in the downtown Smith's, this one does not carry). Added bonus is the liquor store downstairs. The hours kind of suck (only open to 7pm) but its SO convenient. read more

This smiths is clean first and foremost. The parking lot is kind of a joke but at least it's heated so there isn't ice. The liqueur Store and the subway downstairs are super convenient also. The sushi inside the smiths is not the best but it's generally pretty fresh. They also have samples but the sushi girl always gives you the evil eyes when you grab a piece.
