Office dog.

Well this is not the vet I would ever choose to go to, but my parents used it for their dog so that's where I took her when I was in town and found her having issues. Not to bury the lead here, so the dog is doing fine. They correctly diagnosed the dogs UTI and suggested she may have some kidney disease but would have to be retested once the UTI was cleared up. I will give them points for accuracy and treatment. They don't do appointments though, rather just walk ins which is super weird for a regular vet. They also don't charge like a regular vet but more like an emergency vet, which they are not. I had the bloodwork rerun in Arizona once the UTI was cleared up. They were correct in that there was kidney damage which we are working on, so I'm glad they suggested the retest. Their charge for the bloodwork, approached $600. My AZ vets charge to rerun the exact same bloodwork, about $300.

Great hospital. They have a separate entrance for cats. They got us in the same day for our new kitten exam. Dr. Kelsey Dobesh was super nice and the office staff was all great. We are new to Santa Fe and so glad to have found them.

We have always counted on Smith Vet for our dogs when we are in Santa Fe for the summers. They are "the Mayo Clinic" of Vet clinics in New Mexico. I highly recommend them. Our Briard got Foxtail in her paws and nose. I rushed her to the clinic and they got them out before surgery was needed. Our Miniature Dachshund eats things he shouldn't. Smith Vet gets him back in shape. It's comforting to know that there is such reliable and excellent care for my dogs at Smith Vet.

Savannah - The crippled dog sent away with no treatment.

The following is the email I just left for the clinic. I cut and pasted the address from their website. It got kicked back to me "ADDRESS NOT FOUND. "Figures... I just got back from your clinic. My dog Savannah wasn't seen. It isn't just a matter of her not getting medical attention. The woman working behind the counter - middle-aged, hispanic - was unconscionably rude. Here's what happened: I arrived in the parking lot and called your number as per your instructions online. No one answered. I called again with the same result. From what I read in your instructions, I was supposed to go into the lobby if nobody answered the phone. I tried but the door was locked. The woman aforementioned came to the door and told me the instructions were on door. I told her I read the instructions and nobody was answering the phone. She said call again and I'll answer. I called again several times and she didn't answer. I knocked on the glass in the sidelight and she came out. Here's the exchange that followed: Her: What do you want? We're only seeing sick dogs and emergencies. Me:My dog went to the dog park yesterday and damaged 2 of her paws, but... At that point she cut me off. What I was going to say before she rudely interrupted me is: but now it seems to be more than that. She's become so crippled, she can just barely walk and she's obviously in pain. Her: Come back tomorrow! (She yelled this twice!) If you don't consider my dog's problem serious enough to warrant attention today, that's bad enough, but there was no justification for being so offensive and uncivil. She could have denied my dog medical attention and at least been gracious about it.

For what this Vet practice charges, they do not meet the standard. I wish there were more choices in Santa Fe.

Waited nearly 3 hours. They don't take appointments. This veterinary clinic could be hugely improved with a simple appointment system.

Ask the Community - Smith Veterinary Hospital, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

Was this vet practice purchased recently by a chain? I went to their web site, and it looks like a different company. Anyone know? Is the staff the same?

It was purchased by a corp, i was told Some staff are still there. One of the owners, Dr. Cathy…

I spoke with 8 different places regarding a very simple glands expression for my brother's cat yesterday 4/19. Most of the places I spoke with were rather rude and in my opinion price gouging. During my vet screenings, I reached out to the Animal Clinic and I had the pleasure of speaking with Esmeralda. She was very pleasant and polite as well as accepted the fact that I was not ready to book an appointment right away. After making a few more calls and speaking with other vets, I called the Animal Clinic back, this time speaking with Jackie. Again, super pleasant and polite, I cannot stress this enough as other vets were not as professional. They were able to see me the next day 4/20 (today). During my visit, I was 23 minutes late. Now being a local and having been to a number of vets here in town, I was expecting to be turned away. Instead I was greeted by Dr. Hinko, and warmly welcomed into a room. The staff worked efficiently as other clients were arriving on time for their appointments and timely had me and my cat in, out, and on our way. Overall, if I could give the Animal Clinic 100 stars I would definitely do so. They were polite, made availability, and were reasonably priced. They have left me with a extremely positive experience and will be my vet of choice from here on out with all my family's animals. Thank you Dr. Hinko, Esmeralda, and Jackie. You all run a tight practice and it shows. PS - Dr. Hinko was right, Tito (my brother's cat) is named after the general, not the vodka.

My Experience at Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic…read more On October 26, 2023, I brought my beloved cat, Higgins, to Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic in Santa Fe for what was supposed to be a routine dental procedure under anesthesia. He was entrusted to the care of Dr. Jonathan Baldys. Later that afternoon, Higgins was released without a consultation from the veterinarian. He appeared to be drooling, which I was told was normal, but he soon began gagging and acting distressed. I also noticed a strange "crunchy" sensation in his back. When we followed up the next day, we were told that Higgins had not received subcutaneous fluids, contradicting what I had suspected. That same day, Higgins was examined again by Dr. Baldys, who diagnosed him with subcutaneous emphysema caused by a torn trachea, apparently due to intubation during the dental procedure. He attempted to relieve the trapped air under Higgins' skin and sent us home with medication. Despite my continued efforts to stabilize Higgins and multiple visits to RoadRunner Veterinary Clinic and Gruda Veterinary Hospital over the following week--including oxygen therapy and emergency interventions--Higgins' condition deteriorated. He died from cardiac arrest on November 5, 2023, just ten days after what should have been a routine dental cleaning. I filed a formal complaint with the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine, in which I alleged that Higgins' death was the result of negligence, incompetence, or malpractice. The Board ultimately dismissed the complaint. I respectfully disagreed with that outcome and remain deeply concerned about the standard of care my cat received. Higgins was a loving, trusting companion, and he suffered immensely in his final days. I remain heartbroken and haunted by the fact that his death may have been preventable. If you're considering Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic, I encourage you to ask detailed questions, seek second opinions, and make the decision that is best for your animal. I will never get Higgins back, but I hope that sharing my experience may spare someone else the pain we've experienced.

My first advice... put your dogs on the CareClub plan! Both of my dogs are on the monthly plan…read moresince they were puppies! It's extremely helpful having peace of mind knowing their regular exams (and even most urgent visits) have been covered, as well as their vaccines and fecal tests. Knowing I don't have to come out of pocket every visit is a good feeling. Other than paying for medications and preventative stuff... this CareClub is a lifesaver! As for the hospital and staff... they have always been amazing!! I have a Cane Corso and Olde English Bulldogge... and the staff and docs have always been great to my giant boys. They seem to understand breed specific needs (like the proper age to neutered a cane corso) and knowing that my bulldog shouldn't go under sedation unless absolutely necessary. My corso had his neuter, gastropexy (stomach surger recommended for giant barrel chested breeds), and cherry eye removal all done at VCA. The surgeries were all successful, and recovery time was easy. I attribute this recovery magic to the amazing surgery team's skill and care. My bulldog has had skin issues due to food and environmental allergies (that was fixed with an allergy shot. GET THIS SHOT IF YOUR DOG HAS RANDOM ALLERGIES!) and recently a ruptured cysts. The doctor fully understands what cysts are scary and which are common. I wasn't forced to do some random tests or surgery for removal. I have had bad experiences with Vets in the past. But never at VCA. Pet care is expensive... but VCA has always provided upfront estimates and NEVER has my payment been on the high end of that estimate. I'm always surprised it turns out to be on the low end. Also, they TEXT!! When I send a message about a concern... they respond all the time, and fast!! VCA is great! The docs and staff are great! They know my dogs needs, temperaments and breed specifics!

There has got to be some sort of corporate push on VCA affiliate veterinary clinics to upsell everything, from procedures to products, because I've never experienced anything like it with any other vet practice. Be canny when discussing procedures like canine teeth cleanings (ask the vet if your dog has visible plaque / tartar buildup), and make sure you get the FULL cost estimate ahead of time before you schedule anything. Discuss each thing they want to prescribe and charge you for, as some may not be strictly necessary. If you feel your dog needs the cleaning, get estimates from a couple other vet clinics. Another tip: if getting a heart worm test and a prescription for flea & tick meds (eg, Simparica Trio), before leaving the office be sure to request a written copy of the prescription (they "don't provide digital copies" or via the VCA app) so you can use it at Chewy.com or other online pet pharmacy service for the exact same product at a lower price. I gave 2 stars because the vets are okay, but not super personable. We saw so many different vets over the years with this practice and never felt like we had an actual relationship with any of them. Add to that the weird upselling of unnecessary services and meds... Can you really trust them? And at those prices? No thanks. Our dog & cat deserve better and, honestly, so do we.
