Holmes Bend Campground - Each site has a picnic table, fire pit and tall top table... I assume for fish preparing.

If you've followed my camping adventures, you probably remember me exploring mainly the state parks in the last few years, but this year I've loving the Corps of Engineer based campgrounds. It's about a mile from the marina and beach. There is one loop/area within the campground that has water view sites. I wouldn't call it waterfront, because the water is pretty far off in the distance and even fenced off, so lake access isn't an option. All of the sites seemed to be heavily shaded and most were private. I liked how many of the sites were staggered, making each site more private than at the majority of the state park campgrounds. We booked on recreation.gov for the July 4th weekend, so we were ecstatic that they had one site left. It was one of the few without water hookup, but there is a drinking water facet at site #85, so we easily filled up our tank before setting up camp at site #28. I peeked in at the bathhouse and although it was a bit dated, but it was clean. Each site has a picnic table and a fire pit that has a grill grid as well. Bring your bicycle, because most of the pavement and roadways within the campground are flat.

This was my favorite campground so far. I know, I say that every time. What I loved so much about…read morethis one was the view of the lake. Some of the sites were literally steps away from Nolin River Lake. The lake itself is small, but don't let that fool you, it's gorgeous. We decided to go here the Monday before the weekend and there were several lakeside spots available, but by the time we pulled the trigger and actually booked, two days later there weren't any lakeside sites available. We still booked site B6, which was about 6 spots uphill, away from the lake. We still had a distant view of the lake, but the sites in between were a bit annoying. People need to learn camping etiquette... don't walk through people's sites as shortcuts, it's rude. That's not really the fault of the campground though, but speaking of rude... the camp host was a grumpy asshole. The wife wasn't so much, but dude needs to go retire... somewhere up north. I ask questions to figure things out... and here's what I found out: cancellations are no penalty within 24 hours, so those spots that weren't available on Wednesday, were suddenly available on Friday. Too bad we were already set up on Thursday night. Again, rude people! There isn't the usual reservation fee, like there is at other campgrounds. This campground is government run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District... what that exactly means or what difference it is from State Parks, I'm not exactly sure. Many of the sites were shaded, mostly by pine trees. There was only one concrete pad though, the rest were gravel. Friday we were one of the only ones there at the campground, so we explored, walked down one of the secluded primitive sites and cast our fishing poles. I also loved that they have a late check out. Not all of the campers took advantage of that, so we were one of the only ones left around noon on Sunday, checkout day. There are several other campgrounds in the area, including Wax and Nolin River State Park campgrounds. We drove around those campgrounds, and they too had gorgeous sites. If you've not been to Nolin River Lake and like to boat or camp, I highly recommend planning a trip to the Cub Run area.

The park is very beautiful and well kept. It has electric/water sites and primitive camping sites. On our last day there, Mr Brown actually came to our camp site multiple times to assist us with getting a camping pass for my disabled husband. They went above and beyond to make sure that our stay at the camp ground was nothing less than perfect. I hope to see them back again next year, as we will be returning. Thanks again Mr and Mrs Brown!!!

It's my favorite campground when I'm looking for seclusion. It seems like you're hours from the city, but it's just about an hour and a half from Lexington and 20 minutes or so from the interstate. The Grove is it's sister property, so if there isn't spots available here, there may be some at The Grove. Loops D & H are available via reservation, the other loops are walk up. This time we stayed in loop G area... G2 was our site and through the trees, you could see the lake. The paved pad was long and then there were steps that led to the huge graveled fire pit area. Perfect for tent camping. It wasn't considered a premium or double site, but compared to state resort park sites, it was at least twice as big. The shower house was decent. The water cold and the fact that the water on the shower was controlled by a button that you had to push every 30 seconds, was a bit annoying. I was thankful for hand soap and toilet paper though. The lady at check-in was a hot mess. She kept answering her cell phone and the landline phone instead of waiting on us. She didn't know which sites were lake side and wouldn't let us pay, look to choose a site, drop off and come back. She made us tow the camper down the narrow paths, choose a spot and then come back to pay with the camper in tow. Then it took her at least 10 minutes to write up the ticket, etc. After a 45 minute fiasco, we finally set up in the dark. Lesson learned... Remember what site # that you want, if you've not been there, study the map before you go. Things to consider are if you want to be by the lake, the shower house, or away from other sites. It's an American Land and Leisure run campground. I can't really figure out the ins and outs of the structurally run campgrounds... I've stayed at the Cor of Engineer, state park and KOA campgrounds. The American Land and Leisure campgrounds and sites seem to be the biggest and the most inexpensive.

Good luck finding a halfway level spot. We were lucky and it wasn't busy so we got a nice wide spot near the bathrooms and showers and laundry. In the main area. ( full hookup by office) there is no sewer connections and no cable. Could only get 3 off channels. We are here "off season" and the restaurant doesn't open until May 2. It's quite a walk down the pier to the store and restaurant. There are cabins on other side of marina from Rv sites. Plenty of ramps to put boat in water. There is not a lot of signage where to go so got to ask many questions instead of someone explaining things to you. Prices are cheap right now. Average of $29 per night.

When we pulled in, it was about to storm and almost dark. We were greeted at the store which was apparently closed. The gentleman explained that he would just come by in the morning to collect the due. He also said that there isn't any pre-booking available, everything is walk up only. Right now the rate in the first RV area is $24 per night. The rate increases for the season on 5/20/17. The second area RV section doesn't include sewer hook ups and is $4 cheaper. The second area is where the playground and dock access that leads to the marina is and seemed to currently be more popular than the first area. The views from both sections overlook the marina and beautifully picturesque. They have several large, pull through sites. We stayed in site L which was the closest one to the lake. None of the sites have lake access, but the marina is within a few minutes walk. A very important and possible deal breaker for anyone concerned about the drive there is that it is a narrow road and if you're heading in late when the boats are headed home, they take up most of the road and you practically have to pull off to allow them to pass.
