I have been a patient of John's Family Dentistry for many years. In fact, I gave them a 5 star…read morereview in the past. Dr. Steve and Mary were excellent, as were their staff. Unfortunately, the practice sold as Dr. Steve more than deserved to retire. The practice kind of looks the same. It is clean. It is not maintained to the same level of care and quality as the Johns had maintained it. That is evident in missing supplies and tools from exam rooms, community involvement, and the little extra touches that show quality vs quantity make a difference. Most of the old staff has left as well. I have encountered good and bad with the new staff. Some are very polite and caring. The hygienist that I saw seemed to do a thorough job. Dr.U is very knowledgeable and caring as well and appears to want to provide to best care possible to his patients. Overall, I have experienced rude and argumentative staff. I was told today that I was 20 min late for an appointment. No one had called to change it. I had not confirmed it. It was documented, so THAT must be correct. I asked her to double check after she argued with me. I sat down and wait. She checked and then apologized. It had been documented but not confirmed. She called the hygienist and a few minutes later I was called back. I sat down in the chair, apologized to the hygienist and explained. She argued with me, saying my appointment was at 11. I offered to show her my phone and explained what had happened. She began to look through her computer. She then said, well you were still late. I saw you pull in at 11:27 but I will go ahead and see you. I said I got here at 11:23. My appointment was at 11:20, but you can reschedule. I left. It was 11:32 when I got to my car? I'm not sure about you but 1. I couldn't see my car from her room. 2. I'm not sure how all of that happened in a matter of 5 minutes. And 3. I do not want to continue with a practice that supports that openly rude attitude toward patients. Furthermore, why not just call me when they thought I was running late??!!! That is good management. If I was actually running that late I would have called and said Hey, I'm running late- can you still get me in or should I reschedule. ...... oh well, sorry Dr U. You just lost a good paying customer and I'm afraid many more will follow. Oh wait! I forgot to mention sedation surgery... my husband came to pick me up as instructed. He called as instructed when he arrived and waited in the parking lot as instructed. He waited 20 minutes. The nurse and hygienist taking care of me were becoming impatient because no one came. I believe they called him directly at that point I was wheeled out, sedated. When we got to the car, the nurse told my husband, You were supposed to call us very rudely. My husband said I did. I have been here waiting. No concern. Here she is. Where have you been. Instead of " Oh we're sorry they didn't tell us you called."

I physically went into the office and presented my card and asked if my insurance was in network and accepted. I was not told anything to the contrary, and was set up with a new patient appointment. I had the work done, the appointment went fine, although I felt like they were a bit "aggressive" in trying to upsell me (I've had two fillings in 45 years, and they told me I needed two more fillings and possibly sealants put on two other teeth). I paid what they told me was my portion according to my insurance on the day and assumed that was that. Fast forward five weeks later, and I get a text telling me I owe them an additional $100.03. I call the office and, SURPRISE! My insurance was not in network. Nothing about this was ever indicated to me. When I complained, explaining I had never been told that, the billing lady (Jessica) told me that she was the one who had made my appointment, and that she tried to wordsmith me by saying she told me they could "bill" my insurance but that it was my responsibility to know if they were in network or not. This is the only medical provider who has EVER been unwilling to disclose to me if they were in network when making the appointment or at the time of the visit. I will not be going back to this deceptive, dishonest, shady practice ever again.

This dentist accepted me as a patient in early 2023. I had a couple of fillings done and a crown. The fillings have very sharp overhangs that shred my floss. I am very anxious and burn through nitrous, but the support staff are wonderful! I felt the doctor was friendly and trusted him. He playfully jested at my discomfort, and we shared some laughs. He told me I was in good shape and to come back in the fall for a cleaning. They called me to schedule my cleaning and left a message. When I called back, they informed me they could not schedule me because they are dropping tenncare coverage. There is now only one dentist taking Tenncare within 50 miles and not accepting new patients until March. It just felt like a slap in the face. To sweeten the pot, I just got an email from them telling me how happy they are to have me as part of their dental family. Adjusting to new disabilities with a service related injury has been unimaginable....thank you for making our lives harder and then rubbing it in a week before christmas. Happy Holidays.
