Lots of hand made and fair trade type items, including work from local artists and crafters as well as other interesting things from around the globe: felted and fake flowers and other items, absolutely beautiful wool throws, scarves, various jewelry, framed art. A fair amount of beach-theme decor, but it was more attractive and interesting than ye auld mouldering nautical rope wrapped around a wooden anchor type yick. The staff was very helpful and had a story or additional information about each of the items I looked at. I was able to pick up a couple of nice hostess-type gifts, a scarf, and a neat fake flower. Street parking, which I can imagine can get challenging during the season, but was plentiful in January. Will be back to visit when I'm in Bluffton.

It was as if all the things had a story connected to them. A eclectic selection for sure. They carry beautiful blue and white vases of all sizes. They carry local artist's work. This man, the owner, had just opened the doors to the gallery for the day and was receiving a big shipment when we walked in. Despite being busy he educated us on the works of the artists of the Southern Renaissance which was music to our ears as our minds and hearts ate it up. Some of the work moved me to tears. The owner also helped me coordinate several fabrics that will make the perfect quilt for my new great grand-nephew. The fabrics had cars and trucks and all those boy things that I'm sure will make this gift treasured and remembered his whole life. I saw lots of nautical fabrics that I wish I had purchased, too. The Coastal Discovery Museum came up in a search of things to do on a rainy day in Hilton Head…read more While there is a museum component in the main house, much of the attractions are outdoors, so something to keep in mind should you visit when it's raining or when the weather isn't ideal. The outdoor component includes several boardwalks, sculptures, a butterfly enclosure, and gardens. It's meant to introduce you to the coastal ecosystem and marsh life, which makes it quite unique. Admission is complimentary and there's a decent amount of parking. The main house and museum (the Discovery House) I would rate a 3.5 out of 5 stars. The volunteers on hand do a good job in welcoming guests and introducing the site so that guests aren't just left to wander on their own. While the permanent exhibits explaining the local area, ecosystem, and history were decent, I felt the more modern artwork was quite underwhelming, with many of the works on display having price tags (leads me to believe it was amateur artwork for sale). It left me wishing the weather was nice so I could explore the grounds, but that wasn't meant to be as there was a downpour of rain outside. If you have free time in Hilton Head, I'd recommend a visit to the Coastal Discovery Museum, but probably moreso when the weather is nice so you can explore the grounds.
