Ah bliss. Pure bliss. There are so many delights in Smith & Caughy's it's hard to get them all down onto paper. But here goes. My favourite part is the perfume area. Wafts of sweet aromas fill the air and I love trying them all out. I also really like the younger clothes area 'Miss Smith'. It's filled with all my favourite brands - Karen Walker, Lonely Hearts, Twenty Seven Names and a whole lot more. My friends and I also used to go hide up in the café during Uni breaks in the winter months. It's cosy and they do a great salad. The staff are always really helpful, especially in the women's area. One lady spent ages helping my mum and I find my mum the perfect outit for an up coming wedding. She really understood her body shape and picked out so many good options.

I really liked that there was a Benefit beauty bar here! Good selection of beauty brands.

This one was attached to a shopping mall, so ran like a department store, like a sears in the states . It was a smaller scale compared to the ones that used to be freestanding back home . It was pretty nice with a wonderful selection of household goods and clothing . It reminded me a lot of the ones we had back home in the early 2000s. The prices have definitely gone up though ! They had a similar selection of what they used to have at their old locations, but at a more modern price haha!

As an American, Kmarts are almost all shuttered in the US. I've heard that Kmart in New Zealand and Australia are considered nice, in the way that Americans see Target as "nice." I'd say this target is maybe 1/2 or 1/3 of the size of a US Kmart. The main section seems to be for clothing, and then home decor items. I noticed there were quite a bit of items for social media, like ring lights and phone stands, and colourful strip lights. I noticed most of the items were house branded / generic items. I'm not familiar with the quality of these items but they were on pretty much everything. There isn't much of a snack section or toys or practical items for the home that I saw. This is my go to spot when I need some quick supplies visiting my in laws. Forgot my jandals? No problem. $7 at KMart. Need some new swimmies? Cheap ones here that aren't ridiculous. Need new summery dresses for cheap? Yep. Golden. And then grab a cheap kapiti on the way out the door and your life is made.

The Botany Downs Kmart is my favourite. It's massive and I love exploring this place (although I do come here at least once a fortnight). The staff are great here, I'm always greeted when I arrive and when I leave and they're always nearby if i need to ask of something. Kmart is great for buying clothes to lounge around the house in at a cheap price and the occasional baking utensil (I just can't resist sometimes). My last visit had me going home with some new lounge trackies for $15 and 6 pairs of socks for $6- a really good bargain if you ask me. This Kmart also has the self-checkout service with handy hanger bins, and I definitely prefer to buy my items this way when I've only got a couple of items. Working in retail, I've seen Kmart sell similar styles they have in malls for a fraction of the cost and usually Kmart has better quality. Just goes to show that it's not always about brands and quality doesn't always have to mean a high price.

But I guess it makes sense, there is a Warehouse and a food court, and not everybody can afford to buy their groceries at Smith and Caugheys... As a mall it is no good, there are few A-List stores, and unless you're getting your hair done or buying a mobile phone, there is not much to see there. You can get good sushi though, and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, so not all bad really. Hopefully the new owners will bring new life to this mall, because as a Westfield it just didn't work.

Queen Street is just one long mall already, why would you bother to put another one at the bottom of it? And not even a good mall. Tiny, crowded, it feels like there wasn't enough room for it to lie flat so they sort of piled it on top of itself. With the possible exception of the Warehouse (and it'd rank low on a list of Warehouse branches, ordered by range and quality), there is nothing here that you can't get at multiple other places in town. And town has sunlight, which very few malls can boast, especially not this one.

During those 12 years one of the owners frequently went to America to buy the stock. And for many years they got special orders for me. But ever since the pandemic they have lost the plot. How they stay in business is a mystery without desirable stuff to buy. They're old and no longer seem to give a damn. I find it remarkable that they stay in business. Not worth the trip.

I was instantly hit with Americana as the doors spread open for me. No need to trouble yourself with pushing a door American, here let me automatically open for you. Star! Since the owner was clearly using her consumer... ahem marketing skills, the first sight upon entering was a stock pile of Stars & Stripes regalia. All that was needed was the Star Spangled Banner playing in the background. Independence Day is only a few days away, so stock up. Martha's Backyard which of course is a play on words, (think Martha's Vineyard) has many American culinary favorites from candies, seasonings, sauces, cereals, beverages and snacks. I walked out with Cholula, Louisiana Hot Sauce, Lawry's Seasoned Salt, a pack of Lawry's Taco seasoning, mini Butterfingers and 2 boxes of Cap'N Crunch cereal for under $40.00. Not a bad price for imported happiness.
