    There he is!
    Nadine C.

My friend, Alana, said that Smilin' Jack - the World's Largest Jack-O-Lantern - is still orange in color even though it's not October yet. I had to go see him for myself! My GPS wasn't working so, I drove extra carefully and spotted him from the 110 South towards San Pedro while I was on my way to Long Beach. I circled around the industrial area until I hit a dead end in a parking lot. I had to ask for directions and somehow got as close as I could for a photo. I believe I was in the parking lot of the ConocoPhillips Refinery in Wilmington, CA. I guess I must return in October to see Jack's smile. His face was blank at this time in early July... They will be using black and white paint to make this ordinary storage tank come alive again. This has been a tradition since 1952! Tip: Go visit him on October 30 and 31 between 6pm and 9pm for some caramel corn!

Drove by & Jack was smilin'!

I just had to view this for myself! I made it a point to drive-by to see it the next time I was on my way to San Pedro. The signs on both sides of the road say "No Stopping Anytime", so it was hard to find a spot to take a picture. I stopped in between the yellow lines of the turning lane & I turned my blinker on and snapped a quick picture and was on my way in no time. I wouldn't advise anyone to do this. I was tempted to turn in to the employee parking lot, but it was guarded. Smilin' Jack Pumpkin is located in the ConocoPhillips' Refinery in Wilmington. It's funny someone thought this storage tank would be a perfect pumpkin and decorate it! It was first decorated in 1952. According to a news article, the smile is 73 ft long and the eyes are 18 ft tall! Pretty impressive pumpkin! It's nice to see something different other than all the storage tanks! A nice view for all those who pass by. This is even listed in the Roadside America website as an attraction! The website says it is the World's Largest Jack O' Lantern. Make sure you come out to view it in October! Before & after that, I believe it transforms back to a regular, non-decorated, and uninteresting storage tank!

    Caramel popcorn, anyone?

This is my 7th year going and I have to say it has been the worse! Why? Before you go, ask yourself if you are willing to wait over an hour in line just to get a couple of bags of popcorn? We waited in line for over an hour and it only took about a minute to look @ Smilin' Jack and have some bags of popcorn THROWN into the car lol (good thing I wasn't slapped or hit by a bag - lmao)! Besides bad traffic everything else was cool ...their decorations here and there - oh! If you have kids, they will definitely enjoy it ...especially the small bags of caramel popcorn. So be prepare to wait (note: we encountered traffic about 6:20 PM ... ) 10.31.17 - what what!!! No traffic and gr8 customer service! Lol. So we went again at about 7:30 PM... let's just say it was perfect! No traffic and this time around they handed the bags !!! What what!!!! They have been upgraded from a 3 star to a 4 star review!

Ok what can I say about Smiling Jack well it's all in the picture. It is cool that during the Halloween season the face is shown and off season it's just a blank orange tanker I guess. There is no place to stop since it's on a busy street and no stopping is allowed so you would either have to park aways down the street or if you're lucky you can stop in the lot if the gate is opened and no one is around but do it quickly lol because it's a private lot. Overall a cool thing to see during the season.

Old poster-can't stop on Anaheim to take a picture of the current one. Caramel corn will be given as you visit Oct 29-30, 6-9 pm

I am SO excited and SO proud to be able to add Smilin' Jack to Yelp! I saw him when he first "arrived" earlier this month and I broke into a smile! He is just so random amidst the rising clouds of whatever the refinery is releasing into the air... and you can see him from Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, the Palos Verdes Peninsula - you can even catch a glimpse of him from the 110 South before the PCH exit! My aunt used to take me and my cousin to "visit" him during Halloween when I was little. The last several years, I have been avoiding the crazy intersection (it has a name but I can't think of it... where Vermont, Anaheim, Palos Verdes Drive, and Gaffey meet) during Halloween because of the crazy traffic Smilin' Jack attracts the two days of the year you can meet him. However, this year, I will wait in the line to see this old buddy up close and personal again. It's been YEARS! He's aged very well! He is in his 60s! ;) I will try to add this to the events page... I have to look up how! :D

See the cars wayyyy back there? We're not even close!

It might be the last year. If you have never taken the time, please do it now. Lines move fast and the caramel popcorn is delicious.

One past year, Sun Bum (sunscreen) was a sponsor and held an event at the beach that ended in a movie showing. Some year before that, KCRW held a party in collaboration. This last time, I joined in the free yoga session (with RSVP). Led by Pedal Movement, bike tours are held during this time to visit the murals. The run club I'm involved in throws a couple of the murals in the downtown area being worked on into the running route during this time. Volunteer opportunities are available (such as being on site with the artist making sure they have what they need.) Look out for it next summer!

The weeklong event that originated in Hawaii has expanded out to other parts of the country and world, including its 5th year in Long Beach. I was a bit disappointed the first year or so because they brought in a lot of outside artists when there are so many talented ones here. It also seems as if there is little collaboration between the artists and the places they paint. Businesses offer their walls and artists are given the freedom to create whatever inspires them at the time. Sometimes, the pieces seem random, whereas, others perfectly reflect the feel of the establishments. This year, I was happy to see a lot more local artists represented in the community. Some of them even took the time to collaborate with either the business or Parks & Rec to design pieces that emulate the nature of the places. I live close to Drake Park and was happy to see 3 artists beautifying it by adding more color and character. By request from neighborhood folks, Crisselle Mendiola and Jason Keam added butterflies to match the playground while Bodeck Luna depicted young people shooting hoops along the wall facing the basketball court. Another highlight from Pow! Wow! Long Beach was the closing party in the Promenade. I absolutely loved that KCRW DJs Mathieu Shreyer and Anthony Valadez came and served us some eclectic dance music. I can't wait to see what's in store next year!

Or, maybe not? This area is basically defined by 6th and 7th Street, South of Pacific Avenue. Though one could argue it stretches a little bit farther in the various directions. There are certain art complexes in L.A., (say Bergamont station is a great example), where when you visit you will be confronted by numerous galleries that are open and exhibiting their various styles of art. This, however, is not the case with the Arts District of San Pedro. What you do find here, in terms of art galleries, are store fronts that are closed and are open by appointment only. Thus, the question has to be raised, is this an Art's District at all? For me, I look at it as an overall expensive area of San Pedro that was once a functioning downtown but has lost that definition long ago. Thus, the storefronts are simply a place where you know art exists but the chances are you will never truly see it. Therefore, You must see this area as art onto itself. So, when you go here, do not necessarily expect to see any personal creations of art. Simply understand that you have to believe that there is art in the structures, the businesses, the restaurants, and the people that are hiding behind the closed and locked doors that they claim are galleries.

It's made entirely of wire and is designed to look like it's just casually floating in air. The whole thing kind of gives off this ghostly vibe, which is actually where the name "Ghost Fish" comes from. This sculpture was created by artist Cheng, who spent five years putting it together before it was unveiled in 2012. What makes it even cooler is that the materials used in the sculpture weren't just random. They were actually donated by local fishing families in San Pedro, so it really feels connected to the community. The fish's design looks like a fishing net too, which is a perfect tribute to the town's commercial fishing industry. During the day, the Ghost Fish is pretty impressive just by its size alone, but at night it totally transforms. The big tuna is lit up with light shining through the wire with a magical glow. I guess if you really love modern sculptures and fish, I'd recommend you visit at different times of the day for taking pics.

Ghost fishing, as it's called, kills and wastes wildlife and is largely preventable.
