They have a fantastic selection of beers from all over the world, but in particular from Belgium, and various parts of the UK. The owner is extremely knowledgeable, he explained the genesis of the India Pale Ale beer style, and made several excellent recommendations, including the appropriate chilled temperatures for each beer. If I hadn't been flying back to the US in a few days, I would have bought more than just the few bottles I did. Highly recommend!

It was fun to learn the fascinating history, and the great ties to the community, And definitely gave me a new appreciation for the brewing process! The tasting room at the end was really fun and gave me a (non-committal) chance to try a lot of their offerings. (From the US and not so familiar with cask ales). The shop is one of the most standout things in Southwold; glass and light wood make up the exterior, and inside it's vast and full of light. Here you can buy everything Adnams makes, and more - gin, oak aged vodka, sloe gin, broadside whiskey, a range of beers, glasses, tshirts, tea towels and more. You can take part in some tasting towards the back of the shop, or have a coffee and piece of cake in the cafe at the back. New products available include ginger beer and Fat Sprat beer. If you take part in the tour, you're presented with a 10% discount, leading to us walking away with some sloe gin. Apparentley it's great with prosecco - who knew? The checkout staff were lovely, even giving us some baking tips, and you always walk away with a smile on your face. A must do in Southwold!

I was only in the Beer Cafe and not the museum or the brewery tour. This was after having a very…read morenice half pint of Abbot across the road in The Dog And Partridge. It was fascinating to see the range of bottled beers in the shop and then the range of Greene King beers at the bar, many of which I had not seen elsewhere, some of which were trial beers. As one who generally prefers dark ales, I quickly latched on to the labels for trial Black IPA and trial Rye Beer, too fascinated by them to notice that they were not on hand pump. For the third beer in a tasting tray, I chose Rumrunner (rum-infused blonde). This turned out to be my favourite by far, simply because it was cask and had a nice, soft flavour, temperature and mouthfeel, just like that lovely half pint of Abbot across the road in The Dog And Partridge. The Black IPA and Rye Beer by contrast had a very hard mouthfeel and lack of flavour because of the chilling and carbonation etc which comes from being keg ales. Both of these had the potential to be really flavoursome if only they had been available as cask beers. Please do that!

It's not the best pub in the UK, but it's good for just dropping in and having a chat with some friends while sipping a drink. It's close for some of my other friends to drive/walk to, so we always arrange to meet here. Of course you can expect to find all of the typical pub grub here as well. I've never eaten here so I can't tell you how the food is. But this is a cozy little pub to visit if you happen to be passing by.

However upon paying for my selection of cheeses, chutneys and crackers I asked the lady serving me (just making polite conversation) 'so all your stock is made locally?' She quite readily came clean to say the cheeses were from Spain and the chutneys from Sri Lanka... Sri Lanka! I wouldn't mind, but they were £4.45 a pop and the cheese not cheap either. What annoyed me the most, angered me even - was that when unpacked and inspected at home I discovered no labelling at all which identified the food's origins. If nearer, I would have returned these items. Selling things under the pre tense of being locally sourced is a massive no no in my book. My advice to Emmett's: get your delicious chutneys and cheeses locally, or CLEARLY LABEL them as imported, not Emmett's own. For Shame!
