Mobile City of Magnolia Cemetery

Mobile City of Magnolia Cemetery

(7 reviews)

A lovely place to walk around and visit for some local history & art. I believe there are over…read more35,000 graves here and it is well maintained by the City of Mobile. I think this is the third cemetery in Mobile after Church Street Graveyard & Cathedral Square. There is so much to see here, part of the cemetery is The Mobile National Cemetery, plus there are old Jewish graves & Confederate Soldiers graves. There are many statues & beautiful headstones, mausoleums, & many people are still buried here today. It is free to visit, safe, I see families walking, exploring, people jog through, ride bikes, walk dogs. I believe the cemetery is open from 8am to 5:30pm everyday. The only bad thing I can say is that you have to be very careful about where you park your car, it can be very muddy from the rain Mobile gets year round. There are signs advising of this. There is a nice park next door, I usually park there and walk over.

The ladyfriend loves exploring old cemeteries whenever we travel so on our recent road trip to…read moreMobile, we stopped here. The cemetery thing is hit or miss with me. If there is a famous person's tombstone or there is something unique about a cemetery then I enjoy it but if not it's just blah to me. Magnolia Cemetery had me somewhere between enjoyment and blah. We read on the pamphlet that we got at the Alabama Welcome center that you could get a map at the cemetery itself inside the office. Why this map isn't just on the pamphlet, I don't know. There weren't any cars at the office (more like a house) and it seemed unwelcoming. I wasn't about to knock on the door of a house in a cemetery. If you tick them off, they know where to hide bodies!!!! So we just set out to explore ourselves. There were gravesites of a lot of civil war soldiers on both sides of the road and lots of old graves from the early 1800's. Some tombstones were worn so bad that you couldn't read names or dates. Many tombstones were toppled over and in need of repair. I'm not sure if this brought a sense of historic decay or is just neglect. There were makers all around with random numbers but I have no idea what they meant since I had no map. They have a website but you can't access the map there either. We still enjoyed walking around but it would have been better to know what we are looking at. It's worth checking out but it's not Arlington Cemetery or Vicksburg.
