It was too short a stay, so make sure you take several days to explore the area. This adorable shop was open around Memorial Day weekend. We could have easily spent more than an hour perusing and chatting. Unlike shops in Southern California, this Kansas gem of a shop doesn't rush you out the door. The employees there made you feel as though you belong, conversing with us and providing information on the methods they use to create works of art.

I was…read morethrilled to get to the Svensk Hyllningsfest this year, the biennial Swedish festival that this town embraces. During a break from the main happenings downtown, we walked to Bethany College on recommendation by locals to check out this gallery. The front room features wood carvings, mostly from local artists. Inside the first gallery room were many magnificent Sandzen works on display. I learned that the artist was from Sweden, and made his way to Lindsborg, KS (known as Little Sweden) after reading a book by the founding college president. He spent his whole career at Bethany College as an art professor, turning down many other offers at places like University of Michigan. He was clearly well-traveled, based on the locations of his paintings. The side halls and back room featured other artists, many of whom studied under Sandzen. It was a real treat. The front room was being set up for a 50th class reunion, and a grand piano was on one side. Of course when I opened my google app while inside I saw the esteemed pianist from KSU, my friend Dr. Dobrzanski, would be performing in the gallery in November! How cool is that? I would recommend a visit if you are ever in this area of Kansas!

It has an amazing history about it. The art throughout it is very impressive! Lester Raymer did almost every medium of art. My favorite "thing" about the museum though was the artist working in the back room, Shin-hee Chin. Shin is an amazing artist! She uses large thread on things like blankets, to create murals. It takes a lot of time and patience! She was very nice and spent a lot of time talking with us. Check out her website!

Odin, one of the Dala horses, is a brown and gold figure that, according to the Wild Dalas of Lindsborg Official Guide, represents "the intricate tapestry of Norse beliefs, where courage and destiny are intertwined. Odin's leadership and the Valkyries' duty ensure the finest warriors are ready to defend the cosmos when the final reckoning comes." Wow! I'm not exactly sure what all that means, but it sounds a little more aggressive than what I want to deal with right now, frankly. Looking at this Dala horse, Odin, I don't sense all of that aggressiveness. Odin seems like a nice little Dala horse, to me. BTW: Odin was designed by an artist named Riley Ahlstedt.

Wonderful options at reasonable prices. The Wrap It Up holiday event is always a delight. The atmosphere is nice but not stuffy. Ok, I'm biased on the theater part -- I've seen numerous shows, been in some productions, and my kiddo participated in youth theater for years. And, I've NEVER been disappointed. The MAC goes for both "traditional" theater as well as cutting-edge productions. The directors work with local talent to help them grow into the best artists they can be at that moment in time. I'm continually impressed by the high quality of performances. Especially when I remember that the cast and crews are volunteers! I'm saddened to read James M's experience and I hope he talked with the MAC management about what happened. I found from personal experience the staff to be inclusive and respectful, and to be very receptive when there's a problem. My two cents -- great community art center!

I moved to Wichita on a long-term but temporary assignment for work, having never visited or even met anyone from Wichita. On my 3rd day in town, I happened to pick up a CityArts catalog at a local coffee shop and immediately scrambled to make the registration deadline for the Silversmithing class. This is honestly the best move I've made in ages -- the class is CHEAP at $125 for 10 weeks/25 hours of instruction and so so so so so worth it. I've now taken 2 terms and am sad to be signing up for my final term before leaving my assignment in Kansas. Kathy has been an AMAZING teacher -- I've gone from knowing near NOTHING about metalwork to designing and crafting brass and silver pieces that strangers have asked to purchase. I could not recommend Kathi's classes more emphatically.

This store sells fair trade items and products that were ethically made. You'll find lots of handmade items from people all around the world, like blankets from Mexico, bowls from West Africa, dresses from India, pottery from Poland and jewelry from the Philippines. There are lots of goodies here that make great gifts. I stopped in because I was looking for a souvenir for my kids, and I found a couple of trinkets.
