Thankfully they closed .. Malik is the worst stylist ever and he is extremely racist.. I'm a white woman with blonde hair and he called me blonde in a very sarcastic way .. he ruined my foils and I had to go to Victory in Maplewood for them to correct it .. they said they never seen such a mess .. I hope he's digging ditches now instead of ruining peoples hair read more

Maybe they can do natural basic things like wash condition and silk presses. Anything else I don't recommend here at all. I set an appointment a week or so in advance for a sewn in. Malik then messaged me the say of so before telling me to make sure I have the hair and suggested because my hair is natural to do full closure. I informed him it was my first time doing a full closure and he wasn't helpful at all in picking the hair ( only to find out when I was there from Marilyn that they could have ordered what I needed for me at the shop) then I get there and he is asking and getting help doing my hair. I told him it was for a special event . So if you didn't know what you were doing say it up front. It ended up coming out awful and wiggy looking. They put the entire stocking cap with the thick ends on my head did not even cut the ends or try to put make up around the corners to blend so the edges show the cap. Then he didn't even pick the part nor try and lay baby hair around the edges. He also told me my hair didn't hold curls which was his excuse to not put any effort to style it. I was then over charged for this mess as I had to pay like $200 for what ever he attempted in my hair and a separate extra $50 for braids as he has someone else in the shop do them smh. I had to go to another salon to try and fix the mess as I told you I had a special event to attend. She saw the mess he did and was like what the heck is that mess. She was able to adjust the front, fix the edges, pick the part and she did curls which held perfectly. As other reviews mentioned there was an alcohol stench but not sure if it's from being hungover or maybe the cologne he uses smell that way. I'd hate to say there is a alcohol issue here. I definitely will not be returning. read more

I love this place. My stylist was Malik. Very professional and accommodating. I will be a returning customer. He educated me on the health of my hair and gave me a silk press read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Over the summer for my daughter's 16th birthday I took her to this salon for a silk press blowout. She has very coarse hair, so to make it easier on her in the stylist I put a deep conditioner in her hair before I dropped her off. The gentleman who greeted us was very rude and flippantly told me he would have to wash this out and condition her hair anyway. I should have taken this as a sign to leave but my daughter was very excited to get her hair done for her birthday. I told him just the wash and the silk press. When I got back, I saw he had charged more for some sort of deep conditioning, protein treatment, which I did not consent to. My daughter said he didn't ask her anything. I think it's quite rude to just perform a service that I didn't ask for without asking with me. Who says that was in my budget? On top of that when I got back I felt he had done a horrible job and her hair looked frizzy and messy. I had to go home and run a flat iron through it myself to get it to look nice. As to not get in an argument, i didn't say anything but just I paid and left. I later called and complained to the store owner, who apologized profusely and offered me a partial refund. It was a very nice offer... Only I never received a refund. Despite my calls and emails and texts to follow up, the store owner completely ghosted me and never paid me the partial refund. I will say that I have had my own hair done by the owner before and she always does a great job, but I can't say the same for everyone else in the store and obviously their business ethics practices are lacking. Do yourself a favor and just go to the Dominican salon for less than half the price. read more

Stylist -experienced, pleasant, and always helpful (when consulting on new styles or extensions of all kinds). Owner -well organized, runs a clean shop, and always solves issues if any arise. Salon -has a great atmosphere, the women there always play nice music, they have coffee (super plus) and Slek has its own hair care line! Oh not to forget they have an online appointment system . Lovvveeee love love. It's always convenient for those last minute appointments. Side note: salon is near great restaurants if you ever get hungry! P.S bring quarters or debt/credit card for 3 hour metered parking ($1.50=3hrs) during day time hours (free after 6pm). I recommend this shop 100%. I've been a client since they've opened. I'm hooked on Slek. read more

Malik provided horrible customer service. Had my hair done by him & totally regret it. It's more damaged than its ever been. He does not specify what products he's using during the service. Makes unprofessional comments about your hair type. (If it's not thick and healthy) he will offend you. Filthy Salon... everything all over the place... dirty mirrors... never again. I recommend you save your money and do it yourself or invest in a better shop that's consistent & professional. read more

Slek never fails to impress me. Firstly, my appointment was early in the morning on a snow day. Marilyn made sure to contact me and confirm I was still coming, that level of professionalism meant a lot to me. She did an amazing job on my blow out and cut too. Marylin is sweet, humble, professional, and knowledgeable. My hair looks and feels healthy and this blow out is definitely going to last! Furthermore, I felt 100% comfortable with Marilyn just doing her thing without my guidance; she knows her stuff and puts much pride into her work. Excellent staff, excellent products, excellent outcome for my hair! read more

I wish I had read the reviews in details before going to this establishment. My experience with Malik was also very terrible. He is unprofessional and made several snarky comments throughout the whole experience. I wish I had stopped him midway and left. read more

The place was nice but they charge for everything. They would literally ask you do you want something and then never tell you the price. It's sad when you want someone who knows natural hair but want to take advantage. i won't be coming back. Trimmed way too much I will never come back again. read more

While I wouldn't recommend getting your hair done here it's not terrible. If you need a simple wash and blow out then you'll be fine. But if you're looking for a beautiful healthy hairstyle and a 'salon home' then don't do it. The owner is lovely and the customer service is good; however the skill level of the stylists are at novice level. read more

Let me start off by saying that the people that work there are very nice. They will offer you something to drink or eat, while you are getting your hair done. The shop is also very clean and the atmosphere is good. Let's put all that aside, I was super excited because I bought a $200 groupon for a sew in. It included 2 virgin hair bundles and installation. I needed all my hair left in because I'm losing my hair so I asked for bangs. The stylist convinced to get a lace front at an additional $90 because of the versatility and I figured why not. 3 hours when everything was all installed, it kind of looked like I had a big wig on my head but then they hit it with the curlers and it looked cute. I got compliments on the hair but my biggest complaint is about the lace front. It's been less than a week and the lace front is sliding back pretty far and lifting up to the point that you can see braids one and two rows back. Its also wrinkling up so that natural and versatile look that I was going for isn't actually happening. read more

I've been to the salon multiple times and the turnover rate is insane. I've always had great experiences with my blowouts but my twistout was horrible. My hair was dry, frizzy, and tangled. I will not be returning for any future services after this. read more

Beautifully appointed salon, clean, friendly stylist staff. The owner could be friendlier and introduce herself to clients, especially since it's a new business. Great blow out and deep conditioner under the dryer. After three days and two workouts my hair still feels and looks amazing. I will definitely support this local business. One star short of 5 stars because I had to wait 15 min from my appointment time to the time the stylist started my service. read more

If you had any doubts about this place - forget them! Best blowout I have ever received from Chantella. Such an incredible staff, Marilynn was so kind and tentative and I was so happy with her deep conditioning treatment and wash. Everyone there was so kind - I wasn't even their client and they spoke to me! Overall I was ecstatic with the way my blowout turned out and left feeling amazed by my experience there. I had a groupon and will be returning. read more

I went to Slek yesterday to redeem my Groupon that I decided to purchase for 2 bundles after reading the great reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and love my beautiful new style! Shantella is a wonderful stylist, and Marilyn (the owner) and Sonaya were also awesome. I love the transformation that I received, and the service was excellent. I highly recommend the salon and will be back soon to receive a blowout! read more

Wow, can I just start off by saying that I just experienced the worst customer service of my life from Malik. It wasn't even about the fact that he didn't know how to style wavy/curly hair that was recovering from heat damage thats happened in the past, but the customer service was just terrible. He kept making snarky side comments when in reality he's just not that great. I was also able to smell the reek of alcohol; he was definitely hungover. Never again!!!! If you have naturally wavy hair and you want it styled...I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

I've visited on two separate occasions for a blow out + slek press. It was ok. My hair is natural and puffed up as soon as I left the salon. It's actually similar to when I've had white stylists do my 4b hair. I asked for sleek, bone straight, which is how I normally get it styled, however, it was slightly poofy. I'm gonna stick to my regular stylist from now on. This spot is probably better for folks who have straightening treatments or naturally straight hair read more

This was my first time to Slek Styling Bar and also my first silk press on my now two year natural hair. Marilyn was very friendly and skilled at blowouts and silk press; she also did an amazing job with my color (jet black) ... Jason cut my hair into a bob just the way I asked ... Marilyn put wave-like lose curls and my hair looked amazing for my night out with my husband and friends... everyone complimented me and I even recommended a few friends to the shop ... my hair looks healthy, shiny and full of body ... just the way I like it ...I'll definitely be back read more

Atmosphere- Friendly, people said hello and made small talk. Toddler running around playing. Service- -Shampoo: Mostly just lathering and light scrub around your hair. -Blowout: Stylist detangled the hair first and used a round brush to blow out the hair. Wouldn't recommend it for Tender-headed folks or people with neck injuries. -Trim: Ends felt smooth after the trim. An inch or so was taken off my hair so a noticeable difference after. Timing: Two hours total. Parking: Meter parking, bring quarters Pricing: Pricing on the website is false. I would call in and verify prices before you get there. Ex: trim was listed as 15 dollars on the website and in the I salon was charged 25$. Said their website would have to be updated. Every staff isn't aware of special promotions. read more

I initially went to slek after my hair was damaged after it was colored by another person/shop. I saw shantella. However I have started seeing Jason and he is "GREAT" (and he also was the one who told shantella what color to use on my hair and how to repair it on that first trip to slek). I think he is the best stylist in the shop. Very friendly, knowledgeable, knows his business and talks up a storm (but never stops working on your hair whilst he's talking ) . I wouldn't go back to shantella unfortunately (if she returned to Slek), I'm going to stay with Jason. Keep up the great work. read more

Shantella I have called SEVEN times to cancel my appointment for 6/23 as I will be out of town. I have been told time after time either your busy, not there and will call back (which you have) or I just go to voicemail with no one ever returning my calls. I'm trying to be considerate of your schedule and time but, I'm too busy myself to keep taking time out of my schedule to keep calling. NO WAY TO RUN A BUSINESS. read more

I had my hair colored here six months ago because the appointment I set at another salon was canceled. I was just trying to find another salon in the area who could do a balayage. I went here and a male receptionist greeted me and I told him what i wanted and even gave a picture. He kept telling me "This person gets highlights!" And could I manage the maintenance. I just told him what I wanted but insisted we do the highlights instead. When it was done, my hair was over processed. The bleach was brighter in some areas and not evenly distributed and it looked botched. At first I was ok with it until I got hone to look through it. Over the past couple of months, My hair has shedded and came out in clumps so much. I am trying to rebuild the strength of my hair. I usually use coconut oil frequently to maintain the color or consistently condition my hair, even tried to build the protein in my hair. I have to frequently cut it to make it look healthy. I would go here for styling, not a color. My poor choice read more

I arrived promptly for my blow out at 4 only to be told my stylist had run out to buy a diffuser and that when she returned she would first have to apply color to another client. When she returned at 4:10 and I enquired, she said it would take her until 4:30 before she could begin my appointment. 30 minutes late. And let's add, she was not very apologetic. read more

I liked the atmosphere of the salon. It was very clean. The stylists and owner were very friendly and accommodating. Most importantly, I am very satisfied with my hair and all at a great price. I will continue to support this new business. read more

Service with a smile. Got a keratin treatment and my hair feels healthy and looks like a million bucks. Love the customer service. Staff super friendly. Owner is very accommodating and super friendly as well. It's a high end salon that does not hurt your pockets. No longer going to have to sit under the hairdryer for an hour only for them to blow dry it and make my hair smell like it's on fire... Gone are my days going to the Doobie spot. Better service better hair care, but the same effect. Take advantage of their Groupon you will not go wrong. Best natural hair care in town. No waiting, personalized service with a smile. read more

Kelly was amazing! She not only gave me an amazing natural hair cut, but she shared valuable natural hair care tips and best practices which in my mind is what a good hairdresser is supposed to do. I've been going to Slek off and on over the past 2 years now because it's a nice salon and prices are reasonable. But this is the 1st time that I walked out feeling this good about my hair, so good that I immediately referred Kelly to 2 other people that day. read more

Amazing first time Keratin experience! I'm mixed with black and white, which means my curls are small spirals that easily get frizzy (I go through gel like it's my job). I straighten my hair in the winter and usually keep it curly in the summer, but am taking a lot of trips to humid places this summer and want to make sure my hair can keep up. The stylists were professional and very friendly from beginning to end (no wait for my appointment). My stylist gave me great feedback on my hair, ways to keep my hair healthy, and honest feedback on how frequently people do Keratin treatments (vs trying to sell me on needing it every 3 months with a million salon products). After 1.5 hours, my hair was bone bone BONE straight and looked so shiny and healthy. My stylist even gave me a little trim to even out my ends. Four days later, my hair is still bone straight and looking incredible. Slek created a loyal customer out of me and am so glad to have found a salon I trust with my hair! read more
