Not as bad as all the reviews say they, they have really gotten better! Also good breakfast and very clean.

We stayed at The Sleep Inn near the campus of Grand Valley State University the weekend of March 27 to visit my son. I chose Sleep Inn as it was the hotel in closest proximity to campus. However, and this was a BIG MISTAKE on my part; I did not research it, or read any reviews. Had I done so, I would never have stayed there. All anyone needs to do is read some of the Google/Yelp reviews for this location, and you will learn all you need to know. The first red flag should have been the fact that there were maybe FOUR cars in the parking lot when we pulled up to check in. This should not be the case for a hotel that's located closest to the GVSU campus; people are always staying up in Allendale to visit their kids/for sporting events/etc., and that hotel should be booked to at least 70% capacity at all times. There was no one there. The room and hotel in general seemed a bit run down. The pool was filthy looking; cloudy water and seemingly abandoned. The overall atmosphere was a bit creepy as it seemed as if we were the only ones there... until it was time to go to sleep. Beginning at around 10:00 PM, we started to hear what sounded like someone (probably children most likely) jumping onto the floor right above our room. Loud thuds and footsteps could be heard over and over again as if kids were jumping off the furniture, and then running around the room and up and down the hallway right above us. We could also hear people talking. This went on for about an hour, and I finally decided to call the front desk... NO ANSWER. I called the front desk at least six times, and no one picked up! How can you run a hotel, and not have someone at the front desk 24/7? Suffice to say, I called Choice Hotels and complained and they gave me 8K points for a free stay at another hotel. I would never recommend The Sleep Inn near GVSU to anyone. I did not get any sleep as the loud noises went on through the night, and I was not comfortable. Avoid this location, and stay somewhere further from campus if need be. You will have a much better experience. read more

We love this location and have stayed there before but THIS TIME the room on the 1st floor smelled of feet. The gym smelled of some kind of caustic plastic. The milk and the coffee creamers were curdled AND the bathroom at the pool was disgusting. We brought this to the manager's attention and TWO (2) days later, it was still not cleaned. He acted like it was the first time he was hearing about the problem. read more

Only 6 cars in parking lot (it's a Sunday night) but they pack all the patrons in a row. I can hear the conversations from people on either side of us. I asked to be moved and the front desk told me no. I'll never stay with this hotel line again. read more

This place is the worst hotel I've ever been to In My Life. We came with a few people they found dirty condoms dirty panties bras and pills on the floor and in their nightstand. I wouldn't recommend this place to nobody. Horrible Hotel!!!! read more

DO NOT USE THIS HOTEL. Seriously- this is by far the worst hotel we have ever experienced. Our. experience was so disturbing that I literally took the time to send an email to the CEO of choice hotels. I have never felt the need to do that before now. We reserved a room for one night so that we could attend a sporting event at GVSU- all we needed was a clean place with a decent bed- nothing fancy. Exhausted and ready to hit the sack, we were blown away by the fumes in the room. The air quality was so bad, I'm honestly not sure how that owner gets away with not having an OHSA violation for his employees. Yes- it was that bad. By the time we checked in, it was too late to find a different hotel for the night. Had there not been a major snow storm, we would have headed to Grand Rapids to avoid staying at this place. In hindsight, it would have been better as both my husband and I woke with horrible headaches and nausea the next morning...we were so sick from the poor air that we missed the very event we drove into town to see. Major bummer. What's worse is that the employees showed us that they had been logging and sharing customer complaints about the air quality with the manager/owner for some time and nothing was done. He seems to want that revenue above the basic safety and comfort of guests. When your kids go to grand valley university, this place seems like the best bet as it's the only hotel just off campus. Yes, the rates are higher than what what they should be for a low level hotel but they can charge what they want because of the location. (Can't fault them for that) The first time we tried to stay there, we arrived near 2100 only to find that the manager over booked the hotel so our room was not available. Though the staff were apologetic, they were not even empowered to refund the room charge even though they sold it to someone else! As you can imagine from reading other reviews, the manager/owner never bothered to call us back. As a long time nurse, Im concerned enough about the air quality /fume problems that I will be making a formal complaint to the health department. I strongly recommend avoiding this hotel. If there was a way to rate this place lower than one star, that's what I would do. . read more

The room was clean, a few stains on the bedding. The floors definitely needed a vacuum though. Our room on the second floor was quiet and we didn't not have any issues with neighbor noises. We checked in around 1 AM and the employee at the front desk was kind enough to search and find a trolley to take the bags up. -late checkout is at 12 -breakfast is not great, mostly bread products (and not very good ones). read more

Beds were alright everything seemed to ok. You have to kinda get by the fact that the toilet will run for about 20 minutes after done using and that the fans don't work so you won't be able to block out any noice which there is a lot of especially from the sheets which sound like plastic rubber. If you want breakfast in the morning beware everything is old nothing fresh and they serve expired goods to costumers saying that that had just bought it. Would not recommend the place especially at the price. I definitely got ripped. read more

Not worth the price.It looked modern, which I'm sure they think this is a reason to charge as much as they do. A dirty toenail fell off of one of the pool towels. It was obvious only the beds were made, but nothing else was cleaned. Disgusting. read more

Sleep Inn & Suites is under new Management and Major improvements have been made, not to mention are currently being made. the prices are fair for being the only hotel in town and we are sold out nearly every weekend due to being so close to GVSU. The staff here is wonderful and there is a heated pool. read more

Do NOT stay here!!!! I've stayed at this hotel 5 times since it's close to GVSU.. It gets worse each time. Sink wouldn't drain the toilet wouldn't flush. Changed rooms after guests next to us were smoking all night. Sink in second room was broke too! No frig and the heater smelled like it was blowing mildew out of it. Pillows were like little throw pillows on the beds.. Rooms had not been dusted in months! Filthy and dirty... Management did nothing. This place needs be shut down! read more

This place is a mess at best. Booked a trip with kids. Of course no mention of pool under construction. Now we have already paid, and the kids have no pool to swim in. AC unit in my room was broken. They couldn't fix it and couldn't relocate me because they had no other rooms available. At 2am the room above me turned on their jacuzzi which was very loud; it woke me up, and I could feel it vibrating in the bed. The front desk said they could do nothing about it. I could constantly hear people shuffling through the hallway, closing doors, and talking and singing from other rooms around me. Very poorly designed hotel, unenjoyable stay, friendly but unhelpful staff. Steer clear of this place if you like sleeping. read more

Horrible customer service! They won't work with you at all when it comes to cancellations. I tried cancelling 69 hours ahead of time! Most hotels are 48 hours! The manager could work with you especially when I informed him that we had three more years of our daughter playing in a sport so there would be many weekends we would book with them. They chose $225 over thousands of dollars and trying to keep customers happy! I will not book here again!!!! read more

I organized a conference for students and faculty, and 5 months ahead of time reserved a block of rooms at a $65 rate. 6 weeks ahead of the conference, I confirmed that room rate and that the block of rooms was still available. However, when people booked the rooms at $65, they were then called to be told that the new manager would not honor that rate; the room is now $94/night. The hotel manager/owner will not return my phone calls about this. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID this terrible hotel, their unethical business practices, and the unprofessional manager/owner! There are plenty of better hotels in Grand Rapids that are easily accessible to campus via the shuttle bus. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. The price was reasonable and the staff was friendly. The rooms appear to be newly remodeled. I only wish they had a hot tub. The breakfast could use some work too... read more

We arrived early for our trip because we knew the hotel had a pool for the kids to use. WRONG. There's a sign on the front desk that says the pool is under construction and by the looks of the pool it has been under construction for a very long time. There's no notice to customers before check in??? There's not a lower rate offered since that's one of the "selling features" of the hotel!? The worker at the desk was rude and stuck up and didn't understand why I would see the pool as an issue. The female owner came out and simply said, "I can understand if you don't want to check in"... REALLY, that's what you say!? Wait, of course it is when I've already prepaid at a nonrefundable rate for our stay. The pillows in the room are a joke.. and I'm not even that picky. They stuck us in the end room and the outside garbage can by our entrance door looked as though it had not been changed in a month... there were maggots crawling all over it. There was some kind of party going on upstairs one of the nights we were there... I didn't even bother calling the rude girl at the front desk and instead went up there myself to handle it. You will hear everything that your neighbors are talking about... even when they're not yelling. The breakfast food selection and quality was horrendous. How hard is bagels, waffles, and some fruit/yogurt??? They only had one type of yogurt the entire 3 nights we were there and bagels were hard like a rock. The room itself was one of the smallest hotel rooms I have ever been in as well. They advertise free wifi but we never actually got it to work during our stay. Overall would never recommend this place to anyone. If you're going to Allendale to visit GVSU, you're better off staying downtown... trust me. I went to GVSU years ago and stayed at this hotel before my orientation and I remember thinking it was nice... I have no idea what happened or what cheap new owners took over this place but this brand needs to do an overhaul of this hotel because it is setting a bad example for all Choice Hotels. read more

The sound travels everywhere in this hotel. One of the worst nights sleep I have had on the road in a long time. I stayed over 40 nights on the road in the last 12 months. I heard conversations in other rooms. I was awakened by snoring...in another room...it was ridiculous. I mentioned something at check out and she just told me to give a review on Yelp. I also have emailed the GM of the hotel and have never heard back. It may be convenient, but isn't worth it, especially when you can get Courtyard hotels for the same price. read more

In planning our daughter's wedding, we decided to book a block of rooms for our guests. We visited the hotel in October to get some information only to be told that the manager wasn't available but I was to leave my contact information for a return call. I did not receive a callback so called 3 additional times only to be told the manager would return my call. The desk person, during one call, put me through to the manager's voicemail but instead hung up on me. After 4 weeks and 4 phone calls, I received a call from the manager. I was told that a block a rooms was not possible, I needed to reserve at least 15 rooms (really). When I inquired about the length of time it took him to return my calls, he told me that there was another manager who noted that he/she talked with me no less than 2 times prior. Needless to say, this man did not want my business nor will he ever get it!! read more

I called over a month before our stay to make reservations for 2 rooms, for my family and my sister's family. When I called to reserved the rooms, the person who I was speaking to had a very thick accent and I kept asking him to repeat himself. Because I wasn't sure if he was understanding me, I asked him 3 times "so, that's for August 2,3 and 4th, for 2 rooms, right?!" He assured me, "Yes, Ma'am. That's correct." So, my family and my sister's family checked in on the 2nd. On the 3rd, my family was in a parade in Grand Haven and I received a panicked phone call from my sister back at the hotel, that we didn't have rooms for the 3rd and 4th. I called the front desk right away and explained that I had made reservations for 3 nights and this clearly had to be a mistake. When the girl at the desk asked if I remembered who I spoke to, I said "yes, I remember very clearly. It was a man..." and she finished "with an accent?" I said, "Yes!" She proceeded to tell me I had spoken with the owner and that he makes mistakes like this all the time. So, the owner calls me, and it's like talking to a wall. He said I had requested 1 night, so he put it in the computer for 1 night. I asked him, "So, you can tell me you 100% remember speaking with ME, and ME saying that exact thing to you?" He says, "No, I couldn't possibly remember that. But you said, 1 night, so I put it in the computer for 1 night. I not make mistake." So, you can clearly see that this went around in circles with him. He refused to make things right, he refused to listen to me and he refused to do anything about it. DO NOT MAKE RESERVATIONS HERE! It is not worth it. We had to scramble to find rooms for the next two nights for our 2 families and ended up in an even crappier hotel. Oh, and the showers are extremely slippery and my son fell many times in the shower. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen and I did leave a complaint at the front desk about it. read more

We had made a reservation several months prior at this hotel for the Saturday of Homecoming weekend at GVSU. We decided to stay here because of it is located adjacent to the university. Unfortunelty my father passed away the week before and we had to cancel our plans for that weekend. We immediately called to cancel our reservation and see if there was any way we might get a full or partial refund or maybe even a credit for a future resevation. We knew the chances of this were slim because the fine print on our reservation said no refunds for cancellations. However, due to the circumstances which we were willing to prove, maybe they could do something for us. We called on a Monday and the person we spoke with said the manager was not available but she would have him call us. We noticed there was a call we had missed on Monday from that hotel but they never left a message. On Saturday my wife called back and asked if the manager was available just to follow up since we had not heard anything This time she was able to speak with the manager. She had a difficult time understanding him because of his heavy foreign accent. She explained our situation and asked if there was anything they could do for us. The manager immediately raised his voice and was extremely rude. He refused to listen to my wife and would not let her finish a sentance. He then angerly accused my wife of filing a complaint earlier in the week against his hotel whch would make him "lose points", because of this. My wife tried to explain she had no idea what he was talking about and he must have us confused with someone else. The manager would not listen and continued his angry tyrade. After his rude behavior and raising this voice, I think we will file a complaint with the hotel chain. In the future , we will never stay at ths hotel chain if this is the type of people they hire to manage it. I will drive a few extra miles to avoid the Sleep Inn. read more

I am and employee at a Choice Hotel in Indianapolis, In. and I stay at this hotel for four days. When I checked in I they never asked for my ID are who I was paying. So I stated that I wanted to pay cash for the room and not to use the card on file. The lady working at front desk took my cash payment and checked me into a room. I have my bank card set up so if I payment comes out I will get a text message letting me know funds have be taking out. so not only did I pay cash for my room they also charged my bank card. When I ask why this had happened another employee that was not a front desk employee who stated that he just works there said that charger the card 24 hours before which was not true at all. So I had to go my entire stay with out enough funds for my trip because they tied my money up and I still had bills coming out so it made my funds limited. When I asked to speak to a manger I was told they where not there. I asked the next day same answer no manger. Asked on checkout still no manger. I was there four days and not one day was a manger on duty I even asked if one would be in and I was told on would be but never was. when I booked my room online the card I used was just to hold the room not to pay for the room. NO where did it state the my card would be charged 24 hours before check-in. Then once we check into the room it was very musty and did not seem to be cleaned very well. And I'm the executive housekeeper in Indy so I know when someone has rushed thur a room. So I had to re-clean my own room for me to feel more comfortable during my stay. Also the fridge was dirty whit old food stains and maybe the guess before us had left a candy bar witch was still in the fridge. We also found about $5 dollars worth of change left in the safe. The staff at this hotel needs to do a better job but what really bothered me. They have a bell on the front desk you have to ring if you need anything from the front desk. You can ring the bell till your blue in the face waiting on someone to come and help you. Please do not waste your money at this place. read more

My husband, two kids and myself stayed at the Allendale, Michigan Sleep Inn, in room #203. For starters, our volume on the television was so low we had to lip read and the bathroom was essentially a walk in closet with a toilet and shower. Barely enough room to turn around and not practical for a family of four. Not to mention the indoor pool was down for maintenance on a 4th of July weekend and the lobby reeked of paint (great for kids with asthma!!) The wi-fi sucked and we couldn't even get internet and the plug-ins were all loose, so we couldn't charge our phones properly. I was willing to over look those minor things but I was not willing to over look the fact that my children got ate alive by bed bugs over night. It started out with the kids complaining they were itchy and we thought it was probably mosquitoes. By morning time, my kids were covered in bites and my son found a huge bed bug crawling on him. We tore back the covers and discovered not one or two, but a slew of them crawling all over. Not to mention, it looked like the sheets hadn't been washed in a while. The mattress itself looked like it had been found in a dumpster, it was yellow with gross brown stains all over it and when we lifted up the mattress, the bed bugs were all over. I was HORRIFIED AND APPALLED beyond belief. I called the front desk immediately and asked for management to come up to the room. Instead of management, I got some poor desk clerk girl who was just as horrified as we were. My husband showed her the bed bugs crawling all over (which were clearly visible from a distance) including the dead ones we squished in a kleenex. I told her I wanted a full refund and this needed to be made right, considering I had to burn my kids blankets and clothes. I was not willing to risk taking their bug infestation home with me. I thought everything would be handled, I couldn't have been more wrong. We scurried to get packed up and the hell out of there. I get down to the front desk and the manager (apparently name Pete) never showed up. She said he didn't come in until 11am. and furthermore, she tells me that dear old Pete, will only give us a $25 discount. I was OUTRAGED. I was not even offered so much as an apology or a trash bag to put the contaminated clothes in. I would have loved to stay and addressed him in person, but we were on vacation and when I tried to call, he was unreachable. When I addressed him in emails, I was ignored. I was furious! My credit card was charged $159 to stay in this laughing stock for a hotel which should be called the NIGHTMARE INN. This place was not only poorly and improperly managed, it's a hazardous health risk to the public and it's employees. I want to personally thank Choice Hotels for ripping me off $159, not only did we not get an ounce of sleep, I spent he weekend applying calamine lotion to bed bug bites and washing clothing. This hotel is a joke and the management is incompetent. This situation was never made right with us, even after I took it to corporate. None of my complaints were addressed and my husband even had photos to prove it!!! Don't stay here!!! read more
