As a stall holder it became a victim of it's own success. From about 14 stalls to maybe to 3/400? It now issues a survival guide to visitors?? visitors - 160,000 - 180,000 opver the 3 1/2 days but I remember once over 450,000 when a ferry came from Holland plus all the British and German coaches. The Lincoln Christmas Market takes its inspiration from its German twin-town of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. The biggest in Europe apparently. Lots of TV coverage. The stalls run from The Cathedral through Castle Sq. inside the castle, and around the streets with a one way system because of the crowd intensity. The lawn and The Assembly Rooms have craft areas and there is a food court. Gluewein is in everyone hand. It has a huge fair and has had ice rinks and circuses some years. International choirs and bell ringers etc and on Sunday night the Cathedral choir come out and sing carols round the Christmas tree. Friday and Sat can be uncomfortable..shuffling along and unable to get to stalls. Thurs evenings are locals and easier and Sunday day (not open late Sun) is easier. Evening is the best time for magic though. Floodlit Castle and Cathedral, people carrying lanterns, a lit up fair..lots of yummy food and GLUWEIN (do I keep mentioning the gluwein?) Stall have everything from German food and gifts to crafts and things to buy for Christmas presents..rare to see ordinary stuff of markets. Try it!

It remains as a ruin, but it has a striking presence along the river plus nice grounds. It is also free and simply open to the public, making it a nice stop. There is also information o the Civil War here, with signs as part of the Civil War Trail. It is not an extensive ruin but is well worth a short visit.

Next to that you will find a single room devoted to changing modern arts exhibits. For the actual fine arts you need to mosey off to the Usher Gallery, which is right next door. The Collection also harbours a nice, rather roomy café on the lower floor. The building itself is modern and brightly lit, and quite attractively designed. The displays in the archaeological collection are well-presented, with plenty to read AND see. It naturally appeals more to school children, but adults should also find enough interesting info. The arts room was fun, too. Entry is free of charge, and photography allowed. But don't forget to go to the Usher Gallery next.

It may have a sign outside telling you this is the Archbishops Palace but often it won't. You enter down a long dim tunnel. This is actually the thickness of the wall around the Cathedral. Emerge into such a pretty place. In spring full of flowers and autumn conkers everwhere..then snow mmmm. You are on a highish bank with twisty paths ans stairs but this is the best place to view the Palace. Other ancient buildings are private ecclesiastic offices etc. When it is open (usually summer season) it costs a small amount to get in but you can climb in when shut, over foot high walls, and see a bit. It is obviously a medieval ruin. Climb the stairs to the Alnwick Tower (Alnwick was a Bishop) and go into the magnificent vaulted undercroft. The Palace also boasts the most northernly vineyard in Europe and produces it's own wine. Just a lovely place for atmosphere, history and ambiance. Sit on the steps from the wall and dream.

Absolutely lovely small fine arts gallery in Lincoln, adjacent to The Collection (an archaeological…read moredisplay of Lincolnshire). It is very typical of regional arts galleries in England, offering a mixed display of paintings, sculptures and arts & crafts objects. The picture collection is the most appealing part of it, offering a nice selection of mostly 19th century landscape and genre paintings, but there are also works by 20th century painters like L.S. Lowry. As you may expect, the "big" names in the history of painting are missing here, it's mostly devoted to artists and subjects of the area. The lighting in the rooms could be a bit brighter (no fear of damaging the paintings), and the explanatory tables next to the works a tad more illuminating. Clearly, the exhibition was designed quite a while ago. Entry is free of charge, and photography is allowed.

The rest of the museum is dedicated to rural life, Margaret Thatcher, and Isaac Newton. If you bring children, they will probably enjoy the Isaac Newton part of the museum the most as it is interactive with little experiments they can try and little fun facts dotted around the room.
