I live local to Slater's and it is my go to on pretty much everything. The prices are a little bit more than a grocery store but quality is so much higher it's worth it. This place is the best even if you are a herbivore like me. 1) they have delicious veggie burgers and quinoa bites which tastes like heaven. So- if you are shopping for your family and they eat meat, you can stop at this place get meat for your family and get veggie options for yourself. 2) they only sell meat that comes from animals that had a happy life and weren't chained in a tiny location for all their lives. 3) they have amazing olives! This has got to be the most expensive Butcher in Victoria! I only buy local meat and pay more for that quality. But the prices at Slaters are bordering on extortionate. For example, I was in this week looking for ground lamb to make a Shepards Pie. They only had frozen, non-organic ground lamb.$33/KG! I then went down the road to another local Butcher, at Peppers Grocery Store. I purchased FRESH, ORGANIC ground lamb at Peppers for $26/KG . And I got a 10% Seniors (over 55yrs) discount off that price. I try to buy local. But I don't like bring ripped off. So won't be back to Slaters again. read more

Slater's is my local butcher and I've used them for many of my special occasions. They made my turducken for Thanksgiving and it was great! They are heavier on beef, chicken and lamb than on pork, which I suppose makes sense being that pork is pretty inexpensive and it's probably hard to compete with the large grocery stores. They also make their own sausage and have a selection of frozen meat such as ground bison and duck breast. They also have a nice selection Mario's Gelati gelato desserts (I buy more of this than I do meat!), some interesting sauces and spice rubs, and local Fernwood Coffee beans. read more

Great: High quality selection of pork, beef, chicken and other types of meats. Friendly service and the pricing is reasonable for the type of product they are selling (it's more than a Safeway/Save-on). Good: The selection is high quality but not particularly diverse since they're not a large shop. I didn't see pork belly and they were all out of flank/skirt steak when I went. Downers: Closing is at 5pm which means I can't get to it during the week. read more

This is a great spot in Victoria for high quality meat if you're doing Keto, but if you're trying to feed a family be prepared for the costs, as the sticker shock can be hard when you're trying to feed four or more people. read more

Really good selection of quality, healthy meats from local and abroad. I wish I loved closer as I would be here everyday!

This place is fantastic! They keep an excellent selection of meats in stock -- as far as I know, there's no other place in town to get good fowl and game meats regularly; Cornish hens, pheasants, and bison are routinely available, but I forgot to check how often they keep rabbit and duck around. If you need really special meats (the clerk listed crocodile or ostrich as examples!) or just want to ensure something is in stock, call them ahead of time. I haven't gone there for cheese yet, but they seem to have a good variety of it. On top of a friendly staff and a great meat selection, they carry a nice range of sauces and such, plus the store is bright and clean. Highly recommended! read more

Without question, the best butcher shop in Victoria. For a special treat we recently tried the dry aged rib eye steaks. The best we have ever had. I love the various cheese options and the staff willingness to let you try any in them! There is always something new, locally made and fabulous. read more

I don't care that I paid $128 for two previously frozen 6lb geese.  I care that I was lied to and told they were fresh. I called Slater's on Sunday Dec 29th asking if they had any geese.  I spoke with John and he told me the only geese he had were frozen.  I asked if he knew of any place in town that would have a fresh goose.  He asked me when I needed it by and I told him Tuesday Dec 31.  He told me that he had other people with orders for fresh geese coming in on Tuesday from the Fraser Valley.  I thought great and I ordered two. I picked up my geese this morning and I was in the process of cleaning them when I could tell that they were previously frozen and there were chunks of ice in the cavity.   I called Slater's and spoke with John again and asked him if the geese I picked up this morning were fresh or frozen.  He said they were fresh and that their cooler was running a little cooler than usual and that the geese might have froze inside over night.  I explained how they were supposed to have come in this morning and he told me that these geese came in on Saturday 28th.  I reminded him what he said about him only having frozen geese when we spoke on Sunday Dec 28thand that he had fresh geese coming in on Tuesday Dec 31st and he said he must have misspoke. (no, that was a full on lie).  These are obviously frozen birds that they are passing off as fresh. They sold me meat I specifically told them I didn't want and they lied to me for money. Instead of developing a long term client they got my money once. I feel so defrauded and taken advantage of that I will never shop at Slater's again. read more

When I first moved to this neighbourhood the first thing i was told was "Go to Slaters" and I have not been let down! What wonderful high quality cuts of meats they carry. I get my turkeys from them every year now, and wouldn't choose another place to go! read more

Slater's is yet another in a long line of local butcher shops that has declined remarkably in quality. There are still many people who shop there that have not noticed. My most recent example was buying a brisket for my once per year home smoking. I asked for between 6 and 8 lbs. Yes, it was weighed behind the counter and no I was not offered a chance to see it before it was wrapped. I was told it was 6.5 lbs. I got it out the next morning to start the process and found it has about a half inch ft cap on it. Yes brisket is supposed to have a fat cap, no it does not need to be half an inch. After trimming it down to a reasonable level I had a 4.5 lbs. brisket, which left me quite short of meat since I was hoping for about 7 lbs. I called the manager and was told the price of $5.00 per lb. meant I actually got 6 lbs., not 6.5. He offered to give me an in store credit for $7.50. I would have hoped for something a little more creative since I now need to add something last minute to the diner to feed everyone. These guys charge a top dollar for what has become very average quality. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to shop here. Get your cheese nearby at Chirelli's and get your meat at the supermarket, you're not missing anything here anymore I'm afraid. read more
