"I feel like a number I'm not a number…read moreDammit I'm a man" (Bob Seger) We didn't visit the Oakwood Sports Center to run on their 40,000 square feet of turf fields, bounce a ball on their 30,000 square feet of basketball/volleyball courts, smash a forehand on one of their 6 pickleball courts, or workout somewhere on their 5,000 square feet of turf for strength and conditioning training. Oh no, we were there to check out the sixty-five home repair and maintenance exhibitors at the Hartford Home Show. The exhibitors represented a very wide cross section of things a homeowner has to deal with. Want some examples? Of course you do. Here's a few samples of the vendor categories (and you might want to take a deep breath before you read this). Kitchens, Bathrooms, Windows, Roofing, Siding, Landscaping, Gutters, Solar, Decks, Dormers, Sunrooms, Awnings, Basements, Doors, Fences, Flooring, Pavers, Waterproofing, Heating & Air Conditioning, Plumbing, Garage Doors, Painting, Custom Woodworking, Skylights, Security Systems, Tree Service, Chimney Services, Energy Conservation, Insulation, Lawn Care, Liquid Vinyl Coating, Mattresses, Furniture Refinishing, Millwork, Storage Facilities, Real Estate Sales, Mold Remediation, Power Washing, and Wireless Internet Services. I guess that covers everything except nosy neighbors. The Home Show was inside a large open area where we walked up and down the aisles and answered the same questions countless times about the condition of our roof and gutters. We checked out the rest of the facility, and saw they had a full bar, food service, and a nice seating area overlooking the indoor athletic fields where youth leagues were going at it. Oakwood Sports Center really is quite an impressive facility.

My traditional gym workout has gotten so boring so I tried the boxing class. I feel comfortable pushing myself, or not doing so, without pressure from the instructors; we all go at our own pace with "encouragement" from the instructor. Clayton is very welcoming, Anthony's class had more boxing tips which was something I want, and even though Amber kicked my behind in her class, I left smiling. The music is perfect (shout out to Anthony with the Bad Bunny) as well. As a healthy man in his 50's, I was nervous (my skinny ass in a BOXING gym??) but I did not need to be. From the minute I walked in I felt comfortable. Super nice people in the classes as well (some very fit, others just doing their best to get a workout). Someday hoping to get real boxing classes but for now the classes are just perfect. A lot of fun, stress reliever, and a GREAT workout.

The coaches here are amazing but the biggest downfall is that the owner has absolutely no ability…read moreto provide customer service and is argumentative with anyone who enters the doors. I walked in and looked at a fellow member and literally said "she's likely going to yell at me"... my peer said "yeah me too!" She will likely respond that she is not at fault, however her inability to genuinely smile and say hello, answer a question without demonstrating irritation and complete inability to communicate with the public has caused me to both leave this facility and now tell others of my poor experience. She needs a desk person who cares about her members and can demonstrate kindness and she needs to stay behind the scenes and not be seen. Rude, disrespectful and just a horrible representation of the great coaches she has who hold that place up!

That being said, I'd try to avoid this place in the future if I could. With multiple ways in and out of here, it was with great surprise that the police blocked all but 1 way in. I'm sure they have a logical reason for doing that but it made it so the were massive jams trying to get from 84 to the parking. Then, they rely on the actual traffic lights to move the flow of traffic instead of manually controlling it. It was a massive cluster F. I was about 2 hours ahead of kickoff when I got off the highway and spent about 50 mins to go a mile. The parking at the venue was $30 and I had prepaid but they did also take cash on site. This lead to even more delays trying to park as the attendants had to make change and run credit cards. They have a bunch of grassy fields in the back which worked ok except for the torrential downpours making the fields flood (bring you boots if it's raining). The stadium itself was ok with the highlight for me being the food and beverage. They had a nice selection of local craft beer and the food was as good as you can get at a venue like this. If the food was bad this would be a 1 star review. There also isn't much cover on the concourse so pre match everyone was crowded into small areas trying to stay dry. Getting out was equally as bad except this time they use all the routes in and out. Great, except when it sends you 4 miles in the opposite direction because you just happened to get into that row. It seems like locals/uconn folks know the secrets but as a one and done visitor it was painful. Overall, decent stadium with a decent food experience but getting in and out is poorly organized. Try to get there early and maybe even leave a bit early to beat the nonsense.

The Connecticut operation has locations spread across every corner of the state "to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens". Last night we attended a fundraising gala for Hartford's newest B&G Club, the beautiful South End Boys and Girls Club. It's located "in a neighborhood that needs it most" as explained by Guest Speaker Luke Bronin, Mayor of Hartford. The evening was titled "Great Futures and Open House, and the program started as soon as we stepped off the bus and were serenaded by a children's brass band. There were 300 guests in attendance and we really enjoyed touring the various rooms -one for music, one for dance, one for technology, one for art, etc. The highlight of the evening was a formal presentation hosted by ESPN's Sage Steele. Other speakers besides the Mayor were Claire Burns of Hartford Insurance (the lead sponsor), Sam Gray, CEO and President of the Boys and Girls Club of Hartford, and Ismael -Hartford's 2023 Youth of the Year. There was a massive auction of donated goods and services and food were provided by DORO Catering of West Hartford. It was a very inspirational evening and if you're looking for a good cause to support, you might want to check out the Boys and Girls Club.
