I've been on a serious fitness/weight loss mission for about 15 months now. At around month 10, I…read morenoticed that I was reaching a plateau, and that I needed to do something to jump-start my regimen. I had seen a shiny black pickup truck emblazened with the Mission Fitness logo while driving around town, so one Saturday, I decided to stop in. That's when I met Matt, the owner, and after sizing up the place, I sprung for a 30-session pass on the spot. I'm so happy that I did; in fact, I just purchased a new set of 30. I had no idea what to expect regarding boot camp, and I was happy when I discovered that it isn't about instructors screaming in your face. In each class, we do a lot of things: jumping up and down on a step while holding a weight, making waves out of a huge rope, performing pushups, situps and the evil burpees, maneuvers with medicine balls and other equipment, and sprinting inside and out. Do I love every moment of the class? Absolutely not! It's hard work. But I feel like I've made strides, and I have a terrific feeling of accomplishment, even when I have to take a break when others persevere. The best thing about Mission Fitness is the people. Matt and co-owner Darcy, (brother and sister), and all the instructors are extremely supportive. I feel like they care about me and my fellow participants. It's not just a business to them; they are dedicated to the success of all of us. I love Mission Fitness.

In…read moreaddition to loosing a combined 35 lbs, we adapted an overall healthier lifestyle and make fitness a priority each week. At MF, you will find a positive environment, encouraging trainers, and a VERY loyal clientele. The gym offers classes & personal training only. I believe the workout you get in just one class is equal to a week's worth of going to a regular gym - maybe more. The best way to see if this gym is right for you is to go to the happy hour bootcamp at 5:30pm on Fridays. It's only $5 and I guarantee you'll leave in a better state of mind than when you arrived.

MELT offers a one-free week trial membership. And after one week, I knew I had to sign up…read more I've done gyms for years. Used them irregularly at best. MELT is the anti-gym experience. You have a good-sized facility, trainers who know your name and want you to come in for training, and the workouts are challenging to your fitness level. They last 30 minutes. Quick does not equal easy. Au contraire, mon frere! You're moving the whole time, under the watchful eye of your trainer, and by the end, you will find yourself sweaty, tired, and thankful you survived. Think you can't "handle" boot camp classes? Neither did I until I went and saw that they customize your workout to your level and work around injuries. There are all ages, sizes and fitness levels that go. Feel self-conscious? Surprisingly, I've never felt any judgement. You're too busy trying to get through each station of the workout to notice anything other than what you're doing. I've been going to MELT for 4 months now. I go about 3-5x a week and I have not done the same exercise twice. They have three locations: Glastonbury, South Windsor, and Harwinton. And the other thing about MELT classes: they know you, and they know what you're capable of, and thus they know when you're slacking! The trainer will come over, give you a little smile, hand you a heavier weight, modify the form of an exercise, or make you drop deeper into a squat or lunge while asking you perkily: "Do you feel that now?" Oh, and if you're a woman thinking this isn't for you: think again. Just as many women attend then men. There are equal number of male and female trainers, too. This is not those boot camps where the trainers yell at you. They definitely push you. They motivate you. And they congratulate you. You will discover that your body, and you, are much stronger than you ever thought you could be. Your win is their win.

In my hunt for a new fitness class place, m.e.l.t. kept popping up- recommendations here on Yelp, Groupons, friends, etc. I decided to purchase the Groupon- $19 for 3 weeks unlimited. Purchasers of such Groupon must attend an orientation, which was a nice way to get everyone acclimated. I will admit, I was skeptical about the workouts only being 30-35 minutes. My skepticism has subsided, and I am a believer. I felt more accomplished in those 30 minutes than I have in any hour long class, let alone my individual workouts at the gym. The instructors are great, motivating, but not in your face. They give different levels of difficulty, and alternate options for exercises if you're not comfortable. Classes may be signed up for online, which is convenient. There are plenty of class time selections, and what's really great is that the classes are the same for the full day (ex: all Tuesday classes are meltabolic, Wednesday is melted upper body) so you don't have to pick and choose certain times on different days. I still have 2 1/2 weeks left of my Groupon, and then I will consider purchasing a membership (seems fairly pricy though!).

This has been my Crossfit gym for about 2 and a half years. What I love about Crossfit is that you…read moreshow up and do the work of the day (WOD) it kicks your a$$ for an hour and then you go home. You don't have to think or get creative; they do it for you. It works different muscle groups and never gets boring. This gym has some really great coaches, Glenn and Tobi are my favorites. They don't push you to a breaking point, or bark at you like a drill sargent. They will come up with all sorts or modifications based on what medical conditions you may be dealing with (knee problems, back problems, recovering from surgery etc...) class size ranges from 3 people to 20 depending on peak times of the year. Classes are avialable 5am, 6am, 7am then 430pm, 530, 630 pm Monday - Friday . Limited morning classes on the weekends 9 and 10am. The actual times vary slightly based on the day of the week. The downside is I don't really like to exercise so I usually go once or twice a week. My husband goes 4 to 6 times a week and he has blown past me in his progress. The gym is kept clean and the owner is continually working to improve and upgrade aspects like the new ski-machines, assault bikes and flooring, the bathrooms and the kids area etc. My least favorite thing is that some of the loyal-every day members have their kids running all around the gym space. This is despite the owners attempts to post on our group Facebook that this shouldn't be happening. I worry one of them will get hurt and they will turn around and sue the gym. I can't speak for other Cross fit "boxes" places but I hear from other long time crossfitters that this gym is something really special.

Although I have only had my first official "check in" today" I have been a member of this "Box"…read moresince November and I freaking love it! Part of the Relentless Nation (there are 3 other locations in West Hartford, South Windsor, and Higganum) - my Box has become a place for me to develop strength that I have not seen in a while. At first I was not sure what to expect. I, like many, had heard the stories of "crazy crossfitters" lifting heavy sh*t with their sexualized lingo (WOD, snatch, double unders) and not feeling like they got a good workout in unless they puked. WHAT?? As a runner by passion - I know pain and discomfort and if you ask Mark C - I am a bit crazy so since I was looking to switch things up during my "off season" I thought I would give it a go. Worst case scenario - I hated it or worse pulled something and that would be the end of my Crossfit experience. Plus I had heard that Crossfit had helped runners increase their speed - and I am all for that! I sent an e mail to the owner to ask about 033 and we set up a time for me to come a try it out. When I arrived I was warmly greeted by Patryk, signed a waiver and basically "thrown in" with the others :) Honestly it was better than that - I was introduced and then we got down to business - warm up, modalities, strength, WOD and cool down were explained and then we were off. I know some other Boxes have newbies go through a fundamentals class but I did not. The first day I was like a fish out of water but the instructor scaled my workout and the other participants were friendly and offered advice. I went home and the next morning I woke up sore in places I had not been in a while - and I went back for more! The instructors have been great and always are there for a spot, provide some extra instruction and sometimes just yell when you might want to give up during a WOD. My consistency has paid off as now I have a routine and the instructors have come to expect me on certain days. I also have to say that everyone I have met - from the new newbies to the veterans could not be nicer. At first I was a little intimidated but this has helped to push me and dare I say look up You Tube videos at night so that I have some clue as to what we are doing the next day in class. That is another great thing about is that one of the owners posts the next day's workout on their Facebook page - its been a great way to psych myself up (and You Tube) for what lies ahead. I have been a member for about 2 months now and am so glad I signed up. It has provided me with a challenge not only to my muscles but to my mind as well. My conversation with Mark C still includes running but now he has to learn all this new lingo - much of which I am still learning myself. But its been a learning experience - and a path I have been happy (and sore) to embark on!

The coaches are great - just due to timing, I usually have Coach Chris and always find him to do a great job and get us through a tough workout! The front desk staff is always nice as well. Overall, I highly recommend this studio!

As I pass go on my 100th class at Orangetheory (OTF), I'm using this review to not only reflect on…read morethis journey but to also share the difference OTF can make and thank the OTF crew for doing what most fitness regimens couldn't get me do consistently: get me off my butt and make a change. It means something that I've walked into this studio about 100 times now (and my Yelp check ins don't show it, but I will show it to you on my OTF app!) Let me first preface that everyone's motivations and workout preferences are different! As someone who finds herself motivated by numbers, scores, and being in competition with myself, OTF has gotten me farther than other workout regimens I've tried. I'm also motivated by little challenges that i can beat. So doing things like the transformation challenge (come in 3x/week for six weeks), Mayhem (come in 4 times in one week), and the benchmarks somehow get me to show up and compete with myself. I've always quit gym memberships because I find I get distracted by my phone instead of doing reps. I've learned from OTF that my preferred style is having a coach tell me what to do each block. Yes it's loud in there. No you don't need headphones for this workout. It sounds crazy but don't knock it until you try it! My favorite things about OTF are I can do my workout to my level, but burn the same amount of calories as the person next to me who may be a marathon runner. I'm not a runner by any means and power walk through my workouts. There's no mold of what an Orangetheory member looks like; all shapes sizes and abilities are welcome. And let me tell you...I started from Zero. I self identify as someone who is clumsy and not athletic, and I've been able to make OTF not only work for me but be something I love! I also love that I can keep up with it as there's studios all over the country and even some internationally. Finally, gotta commend the staff and coaches here. They've been reliable and friendly sources of encouragement throughout. They truly coach as they will step in to make sure you're in correct form. They learn the names of the members and especially as I've frequented more I feel welcomed through and through. As of the date of this post shoutout to Coaches Chris, Taylor, and Chelsea who've been just wonderful, and Ashley and the staff are also super helpful in making sure we all are ready to get our burn and that everything is working. Yes I am a foodie. But foodie life means also taking care of one's health along the way. I've never been someone who is knowledgeable about health and fitness. OTF has been a place where despite some very hard times in 2021 and things I'm working through, I got to focus on me and becoming a better version of myself for an hour. You know what? That's the thing you get addicted to. I've never been anyone who worked out regularly if at all. I'm proud to say OTF has gotten me feeling better and coming in 3-4 times a week. Not a cult I promise but I see what the hype is all about. Give it a try! Call OTF today and see what deals we have.
