Had the call been earlier we probably would have changed hotels but it was a little late to find a place at that point. I was assuted someone would help with luggage. So we agreed to climb to the third floor. There was no one to assist with luggage When I entered the room I went to adjust the thermostat on the air conditioning system and the cover for the controls fell off in my hand. It was broken. Then I went into the bathroom and found there was no toilet paper holder. It had been pulled from the wall and removed from the room. When I advised the desk clerk that the holder was missing she said she would note it for maintenance. I think maintenance already knew or would have still been in the room. The bed must have been in that room for 15 years to have depressions as deep as it does. Likewise the pillows are little balls of something that are not very comfortable. There are no longer any amenities in the room such as makeup mirrors. We ask for at the front desk for a mirror but there were not available. It's as if the rooms have been stripped of all the things that used to be there for the convenience of the traveler. Primarily because of the elevator when we checked in we asked it was possible to get a discount on the room. We were advised that it would be difficult since we had paid in advance but that she would check with the manager. When I called about the toilet paper holder being missing again requested a discount because of the condition of the room and the elevator I got the same sndwer. At this point I've heard from no one about anything. None of these things would have been true in any of the Hampton inns I've stayed in before. It was very disappointing and my last day in a Hampton Inn.

Huevos rancheros from their brunch menu, trout perfectly cooked and a Greek salad with fresh greens at dinner. Authentic latte from their Italian espresso machine. Friendly servers who check back often and bring extra salsa on request and who had no problem loaning us two of their mugs to use in our room for morning coffee. When we expressed our appreciation of the musical selections playing on their sound system, the owner explained that it was a random mix of "stations" selected by various employees over the last 16 years! This was our second visit while on a road trip in two successive years. Will we be back again? What do you think?

The downside was the unavoidable decor and atmosphere. If you dial the wayback machine to the 1960's then you can imagine the room. The interior was extremely dark with a small window facing onto a common deck. The curtains were drawn because otherwise any guest walking by could look inside. Hence it was an exceptionally dark room with a small amount of filtered light. Updating the furnishings, painting the inside, etc. would make a huge improvement. Overall, I would have vastly preferred camping. Unfortunately, I didn't think of that ahead of time and had already booked 2 nights at the lodge. After one night I found the lodge too depressing and returned to Tucson. I did not request a refund since it was my mistake and the lodge needs the money for room renovation. The Portal region itself is fantastic. Great hiking, birding, and so on.

The staircase and stained glass are not to be missed. When you stand in the lobby look around you, you feel transported to another era. The rooms are much improved and comfortable, though the bathrooms are small by modern standards. Be patient for the hot water. The restaurant was great for dinner - see photos of our meals below. We started with cocktails in the bar and the bartender really does a great job. The service here was flawless - everyone was super helpful and pleasant. One thing: there is no place for breakfast here. We bought muffins the night before and made do with the Keurig coffee maker. Our destination early the next morning was Whitewater draw for the cranes - its about a 30 minute drive from the hotel.

When I reported it, the front desk person said there's nothing they could do. They didn't offer any solutions.  The queen suite had a weird smell throughout my stay. Almost like a moldy smell. Everyday I also smelled cigarettes coming through to my room.  Front desk service was very slow. The pillows were VERY uncomfortable. The remote in the room was damaged and didn't work.  Over all I don't think the workers care about their customers. I wouldn't stay here again.
