However they do have everything you need for basic pet care; from vitamins and minerals to massive cages, so I treated my hamster. They also have a small aquarium and reptile centre but for some reason that isn't always open. I wasn't surprised about the animal care because the staff didn't seem to care much either. I asked for a cage within my budget and the woman just pointed in the direction, not guide me there. Not only that I had to take it from the top shelf because there was no one there to help! Talk about breaking the safety rules. When I got the check out the woman could see I was struggling to fit the large cage in the bag so what did she do? Carried on serving other people whilst I was still at the check out! So I had to bag my purchases on the floor!! It would have been nice if she put a smile on her face, even if it were fake. Even though they have good prices, I won't be coming back here because I felt sorry for the animals and the customer service put me off.

Their prices constantly outstrip those of bigger, chain pet stores, and I've bought a pet carrier (£17.85) and a hutch and run (£109.99) from there. Both are excellent, and still serve me now, and I'd certainly look to them if I needed similar equipment in the future. As well as this kind of product, they sell food, rugs, scratching posts, essentially anything you can name to do with pets. They also, of course, sell the pets themselves, with an impressive range covering everything from rabbits to rodents and birds to bearded dragons. The staff are also extremely helpful, even coming out of the shop to ask if you need help if you're looking at the various hutches at the front.

I had a lot of trouble with my kitten as when he arrived in my home he had fleas. I freaked out and ran down to the pet centre to ask for help on this unpleasant issue. The staff were friendly and did not try to oversell products in an attempt to increase their profit margins. I was sold a spray, a flea comb and a solution to rub into my kitten's skin and fur. Two days later and my kitten is flea free. Thank You Kings Heath Pet Centre. They also have goods for all types of pets and animals, ranging from dogs to your more exotic pets. It is also a great place to bring the kids if you have any. The Cockatoo is one of my main reasons for coming here on un-cat related issues. He/She will quite happily mimic your words if you don't mind looking a little bit silly in front of the other customers. Kings Heath Pet Centre also sells your regular supplies such as litter and food pouches. Their prices are competitive with the larger supermarkets that have the pleasure in buying in vast stock quantities. If you own a pet and live in the vicinity, then Kings Heath Pet Centre is the place for you.

There is a wide range of products for each type of pet, all of my cat and guinea pig needs were well catered for. The staff are friendly and helpful and the prices are reasonable. My main reason for visiting the pet centre was always to see the cute animals, especially the furry little bunny rabbits! *Awww* So cute! There is always a large parrot who occasionally gives people a fright but suddenly squawking or flapping his wings as you go past. Any excuse to go in and I'm there!

Our cat was diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure secondary to Hypertension. This is very common in elderly cats and can be managed for many years with anti-hypertensive medication and diet. We were looking for suitable food and (regrettably) asked the manager. We then got a 20 minute lecture telling us we had been killing our cat because we had fed him Gourmet Gold for years. Apparently it is made from feathers and bones. Really? So how would he explain this in cats who had not been fed Gourmet Gold or indeed the many humans that have never eaten cat food! I work in Medicine so know how frighteningly ridiculous his statement are but can you imagine telling an elderly woman that she is killing her cat? On a separate occasion, he came up to our dog whist we were browsing and said she was ill because her coat wasn't glossy. Her coat is white and has never been glossy. He tried to sell us some dry food that I had no intention of buying. He then went on to try and sell us some ointment for her warts that was used on World war one soldiers in the trenches. What? Again, another unbelievable statement that shows this man has absolutely no idea that warts and caused by a virus and unless they bother the dog, there is no suitable treatment other than surgery and even that will not eradicate the papilloma virus. And as for my dog been ill, she is now 17 and perfectly healthy and happy despite her coat isn't glossy. Sadly, although the other staff are lovely, I have stopped going there because of the obnoxious owner. If the manager is reading this then I suggest you stop accusing owners of killing their pets and gain some knowledge in basic animal medicine which you clearly haven't got. Your comments and "advice" deeply concern me and if you were a health professional, I would have reported you to the GMC/NMC for gross misconduct and dishonesty. I now shop elsewhere and would suggest others do the same if they don't want to listen to this man spouting utter idiotic nonsense.

Em's is one such pet store that I've used on occasion and it's ok, but nothing special. It's clearly been there for some time and looks it. The interior is a little tired and could do with a lick of paint, but that doesn't mean it's a bad shop. Most pets are catered for here and you will, after an initial hunt, find what you're looking for. They also, strangely, sell a small selection of household goods, like brooms. Actually, now that I think about it and considering the amount of cleaning up I do after my dogs, brooms is a fairly clever thing for a pet shop to sell!

So I was surprised to discover that it was actually a pet food shop rather than a florist. In fact - they also cut keys, sell mops and fishing bait, and give free Thai massages whilst playing the banjo. OK, so, that last bit was a lie, but you get the picture. Anyway, this gets a thumbs up from me, for being a lovely, unexpectedly flowery and multi-faceted pet food shop - replete with friendly owner. It was also rather convenient as I did actually need to get some cat food - so where better to be than a pet food store? They seemed a little under-stocked in the whole generic pet food stakes, which isn't necessarily the greatest thing considering that it does actually call itself a pet food store - rather than a pet food/ florist/ key cutting/ fish bait/ mop and broom sellers. That said, I love a bit of a multifaceted local business, and the cat was happy that she got something out of it, so it's all good, really.

The bloke that runs it is very helpful and is happy to order in anything for you that he doesn't currently carry in stock. I asked about the Nature Diet brand of wet dog food that our dogs prefer and he was happy to order in and sell me a box. A 15Kg breeders pack of dry dog food, which he did have in stock, was £11, which is very competitive when compared against the expense and hassle of driving out to a retail park and visiting a larger store, where you might get it for a pound or so cheaper. The last time I went in to the shop they were having issues with their phone line, so if you ring the number it might be dead, but the shop is very much alive and well worth a visit if you have dogs, cats or other super furry animals.

The staff are also friendly and very helpful, when I was waiting to be served the chap behind the counter was giving another customer some advice on food and medication for her dog - something about giving it before or after or with food, so they obviously know what they are talking about. The prices are also reasonable although I have been to cheaper pet stores, but it is not as expensive as some of the chains. Overall, I think this is a good store and would recommend it if you live locally and you have a pet!
