This is one of the least visited national parks, and it's not because it isn't worth visiting…read more Rather, it's so isolated that it needs a 3-6 hr ferry ride or a 45-60 min sea plane ride. Even then, there's only one hotel to stay in which is usually booked out pretty far in advance, unless you want to camp with potable water sources not the most reliable. Of course, this is by design in order to preserve the beautiful natural wilderness. I visited in the shoulder season in the first week of June, and there weren't that many people, emphasizing the wild solitude. It seems like all the visitors here are respectful of nature since there was not any litter nor any defacing at all. The trails here are primitive and not paved or lined with gravel. You can see so much wildlife here, from tiny amphibians the size of my fingernail to huge moose. The night sky is amazing with so many stars, and I saw the Milky Way due to the high quality of the night sky. It is very humbling. As a note, limited amounts of foraging is allowed. I didn't take anything, but I saw edible mushrooms and fiddleheads, and later in the season there's wild blueberries, strawberries, and thimbleberries. Even though it is early before the first hatch, the mosquitoes here are ferocious!

I took the Sea Hunter 3 from Grand Portage, Minnesota. The Grace Point lookout trail from the Windigo Visitor's Center took me about two hours, I'm a 45 year old male in decent shape. The lodge is at the Rock Creek Visitor's Center, from the Windigo Visitor's Center this would be about a 40-50 mile hike, Isle Royale is HUDGE island. There are ferry's and sea planes to Rock Harbor. I would LOVE to come back and spend a couple of nights. Bring heavy duty bug spray and a bug cover for your head and hands. The rangers at the Windigo Visitor's Center are GREAT, the ranger in the picture gave an awesome presentation.

Don't even waste your time! I stopped in to buy a belt since I had no spares. After buying the…read morebelt, I was told to go up to the service department to talk to Gordy. As I walked up to Gordy at service, he looked annoyed to see me especially after he made me wait as he was on the phone. I asked Gordy to see if he could test drive my snowmobile around the parking lot to diagnose what sounded like a belt squealing on the take off. I was only given a response of "It will have to wait until after lunch. My guys are working past their break and I was supposed to be somewhere a half hour ago!" I explained that it would only take a minute and I would make an appointment to get the issue corrected at a later date. He said it again, "It will have to wait until after lunch!" I walked off irritated and told my brother he wasn't going to look at it, and said I'll just leave and break a fucking belt! Then the parts salesman that just sold me the belt said as I walked off "At least you have a spare!" As I drove off the lot and circled to cross the toad, I seen Gordy outside not looking like he was really breaking a leg to get to that appointment that he was already late for! None the less, it really didn't look like anorexia beat down any of their staff that would prevent them from a quick diagnosis! I will never do business with these unprofessional asshats again! Thanks for nothing dickheads! Next time anyone needs a recommendation on a Ski-Doo or Polaris dealer, I'll send them to a private seller on Craig's List, and a backwoods mechanic in the fucking sticks!

They returned us $50 when we asked to return our sleds earlier than originally planned. Only problem was that we didn't get the Polaris sleds we reserved. Instead, we received Ski-Doos. We saw lot of fun fungi on our hike in and spotted some folks foraging some of the mushrooms and even overheard them saying that they had found some chanterelles. It was an easy hike in on the main path, or you can switch it up to some more tretcherous terrain slightly closer to the falls along the stream (hiking poles recommended if you do so, especiallyif it's been raining recently). It appears that they recently redid all of the steps down to the main waterfall, but there are probably the equivalent of a 3 or 4 story building worth of stairs, which definitely winded a member of our party experiencing some health issues. The falls themselves are about about 15 feet high and there are some miini waterfalls along the a lot of the path on your way in as well. Beware: Google Maps may send you the wrong way. Based on a sign on someone's driveway on the route that Google told us to take that says it's private property, I gather that Google regularly tries to route folks through what it thinks is a public road but is clearly private property. I feel like this happens pretty regularly and that's that Google maps also seems to be unaware of unaware of incredibly major road construction projects. Its vexing to say the least. These lousy directions cost us about 15 minutes, so be sure to double check your route and enter from the MI side, not the WI one.
