This marker is in front of a small but pretty church on the main road near Williamston. There isn't a good spot to pull over to view it, but I managed to make do.
The marker reads, "Baptist congregation formed about 1780. Primitive Baptist since 1830's. Church here was built in 1853." It is marker number B-40 and it was Erected in 1960 by the Archives and Highway Departments.
Skewarkey Baptist Church, founded around 1780 in Martin County, North Carolina, began as a branch of Flat Swamp Church and became an independent congregation in 1787 under Martin Ross. Over the decades, it served as a parent church to numerous nearby congregations, including those at Morattock, Smithwick's Creek, Tranters Creek, Picot, and Bear Grass, many of which later aligned with the Primitive Baptist movement and joined the Kehukee Association. The current church building, constructed near Williamston in 1853, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Elder Cushing Biggs Hassell and his son Sylvester led the church for nearly a century, and together they authored a foundational history of the faith and the Kehukee Primitive Baptist Association, published in 1886.
There is more information online. There is also a caption stand here in front of the church with some details.
