This marker is in front of a small but pretty church on the main road near Williamston. There isn't…read morea good spot to pull over to view it, but I managed to make do. The marker reads, "Baptist congregation formed about 1780. Primitive Baptist since 1830's. Church here was built in 1853." It is marker number B-40 and it was Erected in 1960 by the Archives and Highway Departments. Skewarkey Baptist Church, founded around 1780 in Martin County, North Carolina, began as a branch of Flat Swamp Church and became an independent congregation in 1787 under Martin Ross. Over the decades, it served as a parent church to numerous nearby congregations, including those at Morattock, Smithwick's Creek, Tranters Creek, Picot, and Bear Grass, many of which later aligned with the Primitive Baptist movement and joined the Kehukee Association. The current church building, constructed near Williamston in 1853, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Elder Cushing Biggs Hassell and his son Sylvester led the church for nearly a century, and together they authored a foundational history of the faith and the Kehukee Primitive Baptist Association, published in 1886. There is more information online. There is also a caption stand here in front of the church with some details. [Review 828 of 2025 - 4258 in North Carolina - 24387 overall]

After he was diagnosed with cancer he had to travel to Greenville for treatment. At first, arrangements were made for him to stay in Greenville for daily treatments but then he was required to take that trip several times a week. His wife was not able to take him and the good members of Cherry Hill transported him and waited for as long as it took to take him home after each treatment. This continued until the COVID-19 virus required a different treatment which he has been doing at home. Throughout his illness and treatment your pastor and members have been praying and encouraging him. Last Sunday, the pastor, deacons, trustees and members went to his home and had church outside his home. He was elated and so encouraged by your presence and I just want you to know how thankful I am for you. I praise God that your ministry is living out God's direction to lift up and encourage each other and especially the sick. I pray for Herman and his sister, Dorothy Fenner who is also in treatment for cancer. I pray God's richest blessings on Cherry Hill Missionary Baptist Church, your pastor, leadership and members as you continue teaching, preaching and doing the work of our Lord and our Savior Jesus Christ.
