Well there aren't many options in Theydon Bois and The Bull will do in a pinch. As far as pubs go,…read morethis is not the best. The Bull needs some TLC, but the beer is decent price and they have a nice beer garden. I was a bit bummed as the bar side was rammed with small children and the restaurant side was empty, but we werent allowed to sit there. I understand that the restaurant needs to be available to people that want to eat, but it would make more space available if both were available for seating. Anyways, it's slightly irrelevant! Long story short, go to the Bull if you're in Theydon Bois, but don't make a special trip here!

A solid middle-class gastro pub, this is…read more From the respectable range of ales (including some guests) to more than quaffable wines, you're sure to find something you enjoy drinking. Sierra Nevada is a mainstay. The food menu is long and varied, and the fare I've tried was respectable, albeit a bit spendy given this is zone 4. On the subject of cost, I should say I would have liked to see the prices about a pound or two cheaper for many main courses. And the 10-pound round for two pints of ale did give me a bit of sticker shock given this pub's almost-Essex location. I guess it IS located in yummy mummy Wanstead valley, though. All in all, the pub has good food, good booze and plenty of inviting seating areas and a vast beer garden. On my two weekend visits, it's always been buzzing. If you're in your 30s and living in Wanstead, it's where you're going to end up eating and drinking at the weekend. If you're visiting friends who are the aforementioned, you'll be happy here too.

Then I ordered the smoked chicken and avocado salad which came without any avocado and no explanation after a longer wait than you'd expect in a pub. All in all, pretty disappointing!

On the last…read morevisit I had the mixed roast consisting of beef, lamb and pork, veggies, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds and cauliflower cheese. All of that for £16 (I think) and it is seriously tasty. The service from the wait staff can be a little slow once you're sat down but the food comes quickly and hot. I always recommend the Lord Northbrook and I've taken visiting friends here for dinner. A beautifully refurbed old boozer now a Gastro pub. Doesn't really get much better. I only give it 4 stars though as the menu selection can be a little limited if you have a picky rate in your midst and they're not the cheapest of venues either. Don't let that put you off though.

But speeding past this Sunday, the place looked buzzy and the chalkboard outside tempted us with promises of jazz and roast dinner. Weak at the knees at the mention of beef and yorkshires, we decided to defect from our previous destination and give The Railway a go. I'm pleased we did; the atmosphere was really wonderful. Against an artful backdrop of retro wallpaper and vintage furniture, a saxophone/piano duo tinkled away in the corner, people played board games and read the papers and food was served with a smile. We ordered a trio of roast beef which proved tasty yet unpretentious and we drank a great Rioja. There were some downsides in the form of puddings which tasted more M&S than homespun and some staff who were a little too efficient in clearing away plates. We also had to put up with a few less than musical punters who thought they were on X factor sunday afternoon in the pub is not the place for 13 year olds warbling Annie tunes. But on the whole The Railway provided a superb Sunday experience which I will hasten to repeat.

The pizza was supposed to include blue cheese but they left it off and claimed it wasn't suppose to have blue cheese until we pointed it out on the menu. Instead of comping the pizza or offering us a new one, they solved it by tossing in a watery blue cheese sauce to drizzle over the remaining 2/3. Service was rather unfriendly and the front of house and kitchen were having a loud expletive-filled argument during much of dinner. The place looks alright, your usual first wave gentrification beer hall type thing. The food isn't terrible but simply not worth it.
