The facility is "meh". The hot springs come in two gradients, way hot, and extreme. You can also…read moretake something like a lawn chair and sit in the North Platte River and find the same temperatures. Beware. Both the river and hot springs facility can be mighty hot. If you're a "don't hurt me" person, don't go in either the river or the facility. You can simply plop into the river if you'd like. Nature will heat you quickly. Get out before you think you need to do so-- I'm not kidding. Temps vary a lot and you could get literally cooked. Generally it's just really good but use your body as a guide to safety. There is high mineral content to the water. Most positions in the main area are a minimum of 102F, and that base can go higher. There is plenty of parking. The shower house is not unlike a prison facility without bars, no toilet seat lids (stainless steel stools) or any real privacy, if you need that. The showers and sink work, and were clean each time I visited. These are *not* deluxe facilities.. Outside that facility, you must be clothed in something; the locals use swimsuits. There are lockers to store your gear; bring your own padlock. Stuff is pretty safe otherwise. Saratoga is a small town, and street crime seems zero. I've been here several times. The town could upgrade the facility, but it's free and not a revenue producer. The adjacent municipal pool is good and has varying hours/programs/costs. The facility is about a 3 star. But the two hot springs + the North Platte River "sitz" are some of the best you'll find-- and are free. The area has a lot of charm. It's worth a side trip from I-80 or Medicine Bow.

They have a few cardio machines, but not many. They have three courts for raquetball. They have a dance studio. They have an indoor shooting range. It's $5 to get for the day. It's open early and closes late (6am-10pm?). They have some classes. I wish they had yoga. They also have some arcade games and a foosball table. They have a weight-room and and a locker room. Am I missing anything? The high school swimming pool also has open swim almost every day. That's free.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's, Carbon County which is located in southern Wyoming had a big…read morecoal mining boom. Most of the towns in the county enjoyed a good local economy because of these coal mines. Houses were cropping up everywhere as well as businesses, entertainment and things like recreation centers. Hanna, WY enjoyed a great deal of this love and attention because this is where the coal mines were actually located. Then reality set in and and nearly all mining operations ceased and the county went into a major recession. Many houses in these counties were simply empty husks. Since Hanna was enjoying the love so much it also got the worst end of the deal too. The town is virtually a ghost town now with few mining operations in place. The Hanna Rec Center was built when things were affluent in Hanna. Now people wonder why it is still there and not closed. To tell you the truth I am glad it is not closed. What would people do? I am not originally from Hanna. I am from a town farther south, Saratoga, WY. Hanna is not all that far (by Wyoming standards) and it is kind of nice to go here. They have very nice basketball courts, racquetball courts, a game room and a very nice swimming pool. Usually if people want to go to a rec center they would probably go to the one located in Rawlins but I am sure there are more people there and you would have to pay more to go in. Sometimes you are the only one at the rec center here(not including the desk person) in Hanna and it is sometimes nice to be by yourself without a bunch of noise.

This bowling alley will absolutely transport you in time. Outside the front doors it might be 2017,…read morebut in here? It's all 1950's sock hoppin' fat city fab, Daddy-o. If the peaches and cream decor or lack of electronic score board wasn't enough to transport you in time--the 50's jams rockin' and rollin' through their speakers will do the trick. Wait...back up. Come again? No electronic score board? Yep. You read that correctly. As you enter, you'll rent your shoes and are assigned one of the (whopping) 10 lanes to bowl. Then? They'll hand you a paper score sheet and pencil. I know. Crazy. But, calm down folks--it's not actually difficult to score a game of bowling. And, they have instructions on how to do it right on the sheet. Can you count to 10? You can keep score. I promise. The prices are reasonable ($3.50/per game/per person and $1.50 per person shoe rental). The proprietor is as sweet as apple pie (which is to say, a specific, home grown, utterly darling brand of sweetness). The only thing lacking is beer, greasy bowling alley eats, and The Dude from The Big Lebowski (seriously, this alley is SO The Big Lebowski, but the vibe is completely undone by the lack of beer and smoke). They don't allow any alcohol on the premises, actually. Which, seems to simply further drive home the wholesome 1950's vibe. I generally associate bowling with cheap beer, but we were so charmed by the place that we didn't miss it one bit. Get to it!
