(he implied I should be dead by now, and because I wasn't, some of my issues weren't worth looking into ) -flat out denied that I had a condition which TWO rheumatologists verified. - repeatedly said contradictory things between appointments - avoided answering my questions like it was an Olympic sport. - was incredibly condescending to the point of telling me what I was feeling -touched me without warning me, I'm used to this, but other patients might be upset by it. - had someone call to schedule an MRI. Twice the person who called said they'd call me back after selecting a location and nothing came of it. That's not counting my three other attempts where I didn't even get a call. - had me schedule an injection and a) didn't tell me what the injection was (I assumed based on my own knowledge, but this could be a big issue for others) b) failed to tell me it was done under sedation, meaning I'd have to bring someone with me. (I only found out when I called the surgery center to ask why I got sedation instructions)

Whenever I come across an article or a statistic about how women aren't taken seriously by doctors…read more(a phenomenon known as "the pain gap") I am immediately reminded of my experience with Dr. Jonathan Vogel a number of years ago. I was referred to him regarding a trio of symptoms: 1. Flashes in my vision and vision doubling - which Dr. Vogel suggested was merely psychological and that I should see a psychiatrist. Thankfully I found a more skilled doctor who diagnosed me with aura migraines and double vision caused by early onset cataracts. I later had cataract surgery which cured me of that. 2. Nerve pain in my legs and tailbone - He sent me for nerve testing, which showed that I had nerve slowing, which he said "could eventually lead to drop foot." When I expressed confusion and worry over that possibility he told me in a very condescending annoyed tone, "Maybe you should go outside or read a book." Thankfully I found a more skilled doctor later on. The nerve pain turned out to be due to a large uterine tumor that required major surgery to remove. Following surgery that symptom was alleviated. 3. Extreme fatigue. The fatigue was due to the exceedingly heavy menstrual bleeding that the uterine tumor was causing, which had made me anemic. Dr. Vogel had suggested my fatigue was also psychological. Lol. Seems like his favorite go-to when he can't come up with a proper diagnosis. So yeah I don't know, maybe Dr. Vogel should...go outside or read a book--or many books--on healthcare, especially as it pertains to women, on critical thinking, and on how to be a more compassionate doctor. While he's at it he might want to read up on how women are frequently gaslighted by doctors who don't take their symptoms seriously.

I am a veteran of PT rehab stints having had two hip replacements, two rotator cuff surgeries, and one hip labrum tear surgery over the past 25+ years. I believe I know a thing or two about effective PT therapy. Not to take anything away from Athletico, who treated all of my above issues, the Elevate PT team is a significant cut above the typical PT practice. What stands them apart is their deep attentiveness to proper form and function, plus utilizing a frequent change of protocol to both challenge me and keep me motivated. Shivani's goal is not to just get me back to some sort of "status quo", but to make lasting improvements that leaves me better off than before my arrival at her practice. She also taught me many things that I could incorporate on my own to better manage my lower back issues, and those have proven to be quite useful. She pointed out and fixed things wrong with my gait and posture that no one had ever pointed out to me before. Her knowledge and ability to present it in non medical terms is really terrific. All the while doing this with an incredibly friendly and fun demeanor. I saw the APAC doctor at the office on Broadway and Diversey, but feel my experience was awful…read moreenough to be worth repeating for all the locations. Went to see one of the doctors, referred by my orthopedic surgeon. The APAC doctor completely ignored my actual complaints, did a perfunctory exam, and told me I needed to go on an expensive name-brand medication for a condition that I've never been diagnosed with - and which requires a neurologist to diagnose. I refused, which clearly pissed the doctor off. He proceeded to diagnose me with a certain joint dysfunction that could only be addressed with a floroscopy-guided steroid injection. No other treatments possible, no other option, injection or nothing. I had the injection, despite my misgivings, because I really am in a great deal of pain. It hurt, but that's to be expected. I was hustled out the door afterwards with the briefest aftercare instructions possible, presumably because I was the last appointment before lunch. I assume the rush to get me out the door is the reason they didn't warn me that the steroid injection also contained a heavy-duty anesthetic that would make my leg, from the hip down, completely numb. My leg gave out as I left the building and I went face-down on the sidewalk. I had to be assisted into a cab, wobbled my way to my house, and had to literally CRAWL up the stairs. The next two days were spent on crutches. Once the anesthetic wore off, my pain returned. A visit to my orthopedic surgeon this morning confirmed my suspicion - there is nothing wrong with the joint in question. I received a painful, expensive procedure with significant risks and side effects to deliver a shot of steroids to a perfectly healthy joint. Avoid at all costs. Unless, of course, you have an extra $5,000 or so and you'd like to get a needle full of anesthetic and steroid shoved into a perfectly healthy joint. Update 11/12 - APAC has contacted me by phone and postal mail to alert me to the fact that the steroid that was used in the injection is from the batch tainted with fungal meningitis. Two patients from the Chicago-area APAC centers have developed the illness. It's been over fouth months since my injections, so I'm unlikely to be sick, but it's infuriating. Talk about adding insult to injury - or in this case, injury to insult. I've also been diagnosed with a congenital malformation of the femoral neck. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my SI joint.
