Newest Minnesota scrapbooking retreat. Also great for quilting, crafting, knitting, and girls' getaway. Comfy beds and great office chairs.

Hollywood's - Sunset view from the beach

    Hollywood's

We had a BLAST! Holly Woods is the friendly, laid back owner of this family lake resort. At the…read moretime of this review, the website was outdated, but we worked with Holly to get information. She accommodated our requests before we arrived and was responsive during our stay. Our group of 30 middle-aged adults rented a giant, brand new, beautiful log-cabin-style three-level connecting duplex tucked back into the woods just a short walk from the beach. It's not on the website (as of this review). Entrance from the parking area includes a concrete patio with chairs surrounded by grass and a nearby fire pit with bench seating. An entryway on each side of the duplex has a full-size fridge/freezer, counter, and storage. Off of each entry: One bedroom with a queen and another bedroom with two queens (Holly also added a single bed in the queen/queen per our request), a full bathroom, and a utility room with plenty of blankets and towels. Going up the stairs, each side has a living/dining space with a large TV, a fully-equipped kitchen (with dishwasher) and bar seating, two bedrooms with queen beds, a full bathroom, and a washer/dryer. The kitchens connect with a door between them and each kitchen has a sliding glass door leading to a wrap-around porch with nice charcoal grills, lounge chairs, pub tables/stools, and patio dining. A hammock hangs in the big Minnesota trees. It's lovely! Open to below, each side has an open loft on the third floor with full-size and single beds (per our request) that wasn't ideal for sleeping in our group since you can hear any noise from the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, doors, etc. but the lofts are spacious and comfortable with ceiling fans (and the whole house has A/C). A short walk to the swimming beach with a volleyball net and swimming platform, this resort has the perfect location because the loungers have a view of the sunset across the water and the beach always has sun rather than being shaded from the trees (like the resort across the lake). Our house rental included canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats. For an additional fee, we had access to paddle boards and reserved a pontoon from sunrise to sunset. The water was clear and clean and surprisingly quiet over the July 4th holiday weekend. Next time I would inquire about hiring a local house cleaner since part of our rental agreement was that we would clean the house when we left. It was OK because we all pitched in, but it would have preferred to hire someone. In general, I loved the vibe and didn't want to leave.

Aqua House - Beachy, cool vibe

And while there is bed space for 10, it would be crowded. We had 7 in our party and that was plenty. The dining table does not hold seven easily. The house is actually across two roads from the lake, the main road and another smaller one. The house is in need of some TLC. Several of the dishes were dirty upon arrival. Some of the furniture was a little grubby and rickety. the drapes in the living room look like they were just cut to size and hung, not even finished. The flag in the front yard is long past needing replacing and the flower pots were pots with no flowers. Like I said, it served us well enough but for the cost it could have a little attention. A little pricey for the condition of the property.

The kitchen, a cool, vintage, step-down is filled with mid-century charm. An open den, dining and living area is prepped with freshly painted woodwork, walls and ceilings. A gray-stained wood floor has just been installed and sumptuous area rugs are some of the finishing touches. Upstairs are two finely appointed bedrooms. Each enjoys a view of either the bay or the lake. New paint and carpet make these cozy rooms bright, clean, and quiet. The lower level rec room is equipped with a full size washer and dryer. A sleeper sofa and flat screen cable TV are in the plans. Comfortable seating and natural light will make this a nice man cave or a teenager 'time out'. Outdoors, a private backyard boasts mature oak trees, a view of the bay and a fire pit.

I was married at Black Lantern last summer (2015) and I have so many good things to say I can't…read morepossibly say them all here. First and foremost, I've heard from an overwhelming number of guests how much they enjoyed the grounds and the beauty of the area, so much that they didn't mind the 4hr drive from the cities. The natural beauty of the area is emphasized here: native species surround you whether you are at the pavilion area, the campgrounds up around the loop, or even the open area of the RV park. There are also pretty little "hidden" places all over. Our photographers were thrilled about all the places to take photos- rock chairs, opennings in the woods, flowers planted here and there, sweet antique-looking benches, etc. The best part of Black Lantern though is the owner, Annie. She is just incredible. She was so thoughtful throughout the process and she was pretty much a wedding planner. She didn't mind talking to me about how weddings are put together and gave me contact info for decently priced vendors in the area. That was especially helpful as I am from Minneapolis and was contacting all the expensive vendors- oops. Annie took time to understand our style and vibe so that she could best help me plan an event that we wanted. She offered so much of her time before we even met to answer questions. She also has the uncanny ability to pop in at the right time- every time I needed her, she was there. She helped problem-solve for those things you don't plan on and offered a helping hand whenever it was needed. She chops all the wood and builds things, including amazing heart-shaped fires. What a badass woman! There was only one thing that was a disappointment at first- but then ended up being a blessing in disguise- we couldn't have our guests camp at the "campsites." Darn MN regulations. There isn't running water close enough to the loop to allow for campfires. Instead, we had all our guests camp in the RV park. It worked out wonderfully. This also allowed us to use one of the campsites as our ceremony site. Best decision we made. It couldn't have been a more perfect location for us. I didn't want to get married indoors, or even standing on cement. The clearing in the woods was large enough for 100 chairs and standing room for the other 60 people. The forest provided a breathtaking backdrop. Even a year later, when wedding-talk comes up, other people still bring up what an amazing venue Black Lantern is.

Giving credit, where credit is due, the staff came immediately to clean the bathroom, after I trudged down to the office to request this service. The property is poorly maintained, a couple of roofs obviously sagging, hose, mower and broken stepstool laying around by the fish cleaning house all week long. The inside pine work on the walls was shoddy as was the caulking around the shower etc. The office/store only sells sweatshirts, hats and fuel for the boats. No grocery items of any kind, not even a snack vending machine. . Our group rented two cabins . Not once during the entire week's stay did any of the staff come to find out if we needed anything, if we were comfortable..... They also never serviced the cabins. Not once! Nor did any of the staff nor the proprietors give any of us a "thank you" for renting from them - not even when we checked out. After all common courtesy goes a long way, but that was missing as well. I did not feel welcomed and I will not be returning there - definitely did not get my moneys worth .. This Sandbay Resort of today is a far cry from the beautiful and well kept resort of fifteen years ago. There are many gorgeous resorts around that area, better maintained, better furnished -including towels which were not provided here - and less expensive.
