We called Animal Clinic Downtown, who used to treat the horses on my wife's farm, and they informed us that the people we took the cat to were obviously sham artists and pointed us to a much better (down to earth) vet it Atlanta where we got $15 checkups and a 3 month supply of meds for $20. Now that we have moved back it's nice to have a knowledgeable vet that doesn't try to cram every new, expensive, and unnecessary treatment down our throats while implying that we obviously don't love our pets if we won't pay $500/month on them for healthcare. Of course, when something is serious (like my dog eating a pin cushion), they are quick to action and always care about what's best for the animal. On top of being knowledgeable, all of the staff are very friendly and seem to genuinely enjoy working with animals. I love the fact that they all know me and my pets by name, despite the fact that we come in twice a year tops. The way I see it, humans have had pets for far longer than we have had vets, and we have done just fine. ACD's no-nonsense approach to veterinary medicine provides a wonderful balance of medical know-how, sensible treatment plans, and hometown charm.

Yes, it's a very old building that's seen better days, but what I care about is the care my pet receives. Dr. Pettit was straight forward when discussing possible diagnoses and I respect that. He was conservative with treatment options, and didn't jump to recommending expensive tests right off the bat. When we went to consult with the vet about this, she said something along the lines of "oh so you want your cat to die sooner?" I was appalled. This is very much NOT what palliative care means. This made my mom have a breakdown in the car. We got a second opinion in Omaha, and the difference was shocking (their beside manner was amazing, and were not judgmental). Bedside manner is so important, and to be lacking in the skill leads to pet owners feeling guilty when they only want what is best for their pets. Alongside this, the diagnostic testing costs a fortune. The thyroid testing she wanted to do was around $250, and our quote in Omaha was $80. Overall, there are MUCH better vets out there. We were patients of Dr. Johnson for decades and loved his care, so it pains me to see this business in the current state.

Sadly, the front desk staff became amazingly customer-adversarial. We had a elderly cat that needed to be euthanized. The Receptionist's scheduling of the event was heartlessly performed and borderline rude. Subsequently, the animal passed before the service could be performed. Scheduling issues for follow-on dog services have convinced us to make a change. If you don't mind the attitude-based hurdles to get a doctor, you will likely find the vet service to be fine and fair. There are other vets in the area with good reviews. I recommend applying discretion.
