The servers were friendly, english challenged and didn't know their menus that well but as long as they can do their job promptly and with good attitude all can be forgiven. She brought Prosecco to the table that we didn't order. We had asked about it but not ordered it but my friends and I were like... Eh why not? The bottle's open anyway. My friend had the lobster and pasta. http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz_photos/NmtgcBwynPMQsC4eylzouA?select=J9fFFzgCbBnTnzpvuBBg0A. Which looked great but pasta suffered from not cooking properly. They didn't push the pasta into the boiling water all the way so one end of the pasta wasn't as cooked as the other end. Don't send me hate compliments please but I had the Veal and Eggplant with rocket salad. http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz_photos/NmtgcBwynPMQsC4eylzouA?select=htGxIm_iN-erHxw-HqwA0A it looks good but the Veal was actually rubbery. Is that possible for veal? Or karma served for ordering veal? The other friend had Avocado Salad, Lucky him! It was the best dish at our table that day. http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz_photos/NmtgcBwynPMQsC4eylzouA?select=CllifRS6xI0dy_AwSi7JQw He was trying to eat light but it was quite hardy and I had salad envy! Yum how I missed avocados! So overall, the service was a bit shoddy. I never touched my rocket salad but the server was kind enough to take it off the tab. The food was nothing great. Thank god for prosecco and friends to distract me. I think i could have been really upset with the quality of the meal not being reflective of the price.

Okay, I can't rave enough about this place. It is my local Italian, but I just love it to bits…read more Nestled down an alley behind two huge wooden doors (thus the name), the restaurant has a great layout. In warm weather the alley has tables that allow outside seating. Inside, the downstairs isn't huge, which gives it a close, cosy feel. There are tables for 2, 4 and a couple of larger ones (one rectangular, one circular). There's lots of extra seating upstairs, although the ambiance isn't quite as nice. It's run by Italians, so you get the proper bread and olives to start. Now, I've eaten olives all over the world, but I have no idea where these guys get olives this tasty. I've gone just for the olives. The menu's got lots of choice: starters, pasta, several pizzas, and some great mains. I wouldn't say it's the best place I've ever eaten, but it is the most consistent to have very good quality food. We go at least once a month, and have never been disappointed. Wine list is okay, but I always get the Valpolicella. Service is friendly and accommodating. They'll do your pizza take-away if you like. I feel really lucky to have a place like Osteria del Portico just a minute from where I live. It's delicious comfort food.

Why we chose this particular restaurant, I can't tell you, but it probably was because it was the furthest one out of the main centre and there was a lot of vegetarian choices on the board outside. Having never tried it before and in need of a good meal we took a punt and it paid off. This is a lovely, intimate and classic Italian restaurant. It's warm and inviting with simple decor. It wasn't overwhelmingly busy on the night we went in, but it did appear to have a few families in, being very accommodating for the children. We had a very enthusiastic male waiter who told us of the specials in great details and offered his recommendations. Pizza dough is made freshly on the premises and everything is as it should be when you're paying someone else to cook for you, fresh and home made. Tempted by the various fish options the Mrs found it hard to choose and in the end plumped for the swordfish. By the noises coming out of her she rather enjoyed it. I went for a simple vegetarian pasta dish which was rich and full of flavor. The sauce was divine and the pasta perfectly al dente. The swordfish couldn't have been as filling as my pasta as the Mrs had no problem finishing off my plate. While the waiter was enthusiastic upon first order, he did appear to loose interest and we had to chase our drinks as the night went on. However overall it was a wonderfully pleasant experience. Simple, unpretentious flavorsome food and wonderful intimate surroundings.
