Sika has an eclectic personality and and a vast intelligence that occasionally draws me into to his shop just to strike up a conversation with him. Over the years, I've come here for many things, including a nose piercing. His method is intense ( I reflect on a tear streaming down just my right eye when I felt the stem of the ring pierce my nose), but when it was over, I felt like I had a divine connection with Mother Africa. I think it's safe to say there is a communal understanding that if you want the real deal nose piercing, you MUST come to Sika. I usually come through for his skin care products, especially Shea Butter. On my recent visit, he also had 100% Pure Hemp Seed Oil. I bought both, and later on, put a little bit of the Hemp Seed oil on my face, which was dry and irritated, and I felt immediate relief. The Shea Butter is usually sold in it's natural solidified form, but this time, it was whipped, which was a pleasant surprise. Still 100% pure, and amazing. Sika also sells Black African soap, and some great cleansing shampoos ideal for natural hair styles. Sika is filled with a variety of beautiful African clothing, jewelry, and art collectibles. I was in a business meeting, and I was distracted by one of my vendors' nose piercing. I have been wanting to get one for at least 10 years. Although, I was hesitant, because I work in corporate America. However, yesterday was the day for me. I was determined to get one. So, I asked my vendor for a recommendation. She said Sika is the bomb. And, he is! Honestly, he pierces ol' school. Yes, he uses a needle and no anesthesia or ice. And, if I wanted to get another one, I would go to him again. It really didn't hurt - like really. Sika is passionate about his work. When I walked in, I was first struck by all the african art and clothing. Then, there were some cool ladies there, who were getting their noses pierced, as they prepared for Coachella. They seemed happy and comfortable, so I went forward with my plan. My nose piercing is so tiny and discrete. You cannot notice it unless you are VERY close. It will take a year before the whole is completely healed. And, I am cool with that. All I know is that before I left, I knew Sika was my go-to guy for piercing, artwork, and one-of-a-king clothing. Sika and the other ladies in the shop was very nice and informative and nice, including his daughter; whom was very beautiful btw. He made my nose right right there in front of me and pierced it with ease. Visited the shop just yesterday, something drew me to the store. I had been searching for a specific item for many years, I decided to go in and look around. There were a handful of colorful and wonderful personalities in the store, some having conversations some shopping some doing a bit of both. I made the decision to get my nose pierced. A friend told me about a place where a skilled man does nose piercing using a different method. After looking at the shop via Yelp, I decided I would make the trip to LA to meet this skilled gentleman and browse his shop. The shop is beautiful! It is filled wall to wall with African art and there are many African clothing options for purchase. The shop also had numerous natural body products from natural deodorant to Shea butter and other products, and various incense. The African wood carvings and masks were beautiful, there were many different types of masks and animal wood carvings. In addition to getting my nose pierced, I ended up purchasing a wood carved rhino! The experience getting my nose pierced was grounded in innuendo and purpose. The gentleman said a blessing and played a song bowl prior to piercing my nose. He chose the side and placement. He guided me through the process, reminding me to breathe; the next thing I knew, it was done. He reminded me to use witch hazel and to be careful using face towels and putting on t-shirts. The entire process felt cultural and made for an all around good experience. Might I add, that the shop played some of the best old skool hip hop!!! I was just treated like shit by a lady who says she is Co Owner and I apologized to her, in front of her friends. This lady burned sage to mock me when I left. I came in and no one said anything, I asked a man do they sale bags. I'm looking to buy one for my dads birthday. I only asked to show me bags. She get outa a chair showed me 2 backpacks. I said do you have any other bags in your store. She said no and sat back down. I found like 6 types of bags on a shelf out in the open. It was small backpacks, fannypacks, strap-overs, regular handbags and wallets. I pulled her to the side and quietly asked her was it something I said or did when I enter her store to offend her. I'm trying to support my community and I came in here and you didn't even want to show me your stuff. She started raising her voice at me. I asked her to please lower her voice and told me she would not quiet down because that's how she was gonna talk to me and that she had gone above and beyond by getting up out of a chair, from talking to her friends showing me the two back packs. It was me that was coming in her store taking things personal. I reiterated that I just wanted to know what I did to offend her because I want to make sure when my kids come to her store that they are respectful. She basically told me to leave. When I left, she came outside and was burning sage. On the outside of her store like I was a vampire. I was excited to see him because he charges way less than any of the tattoo/piercing shops I was looking into. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to get my nose pierced the famous Sika. When I went in his shop, I passed right by him and thought he was a customer because he didn't say anything to me. When he came back, I smiled and politely asked him if he was Sika. The first thing he said was, "I'm not doing any nose piercings right now!" I didn't even say that I was there for a nose piercing! I just said, "Okay, that's fine." He went on a rant about how he hadn't eaten anything and something about his daughter moving back from New York. He said, "Come back in a hour." So, my friend and I waited outside of his shop because we already paid for parking. I returned in one hour like he said. When I went back in his shop he was talking to a lady whom he obviously knew. He finally looks at me and I asked him if he was ready. At first, he didn't even remember me. Then he rudely said, "You were gone, for what, like ten minutes?" The lady he was talking to smirked and looked at me, which kind of embarrassed me, but I do my best not to be rude to people, especially my elders, so I politely replied, "I was gone for an hour, like you said." He said, "I'm not doing any nose piercings! I'm too tired. Come back at three! I'll be ready then." Umm, no thank you, sir! I already waited for one hour. Looks like I'll just have to spend $90 at an actual piercing shop. I understand that he's an older man, but his attitude is unacceptable. I mean, he's clearly able to run a shop (he was moving stuff and helping people put things in their car), but as soon as I inquire about a nose piercing, which he claims to be an "expert" at, suddenly he's "too tired." I saw the one negative review on here and didn't think anything of it because everyone else raved about him. If me coming to ask a question about a nose piercing that HE himself pierced, pisses him off then there's a problem. I've sent so many people to him for their piercing and they all say that he was rude to them. This is disheartening!!
