I cannot stop saying great things about this company and their show, "That's Weird, Grandma". It's…read moretruly a hidden gem in the theater world. To sum it up - That's Weird is a bunch of short skits written by Chicago kids then adapted and performed by incredibly talented actors. The shows are a mix of humor, out-there story lines and occasionally talks of current events, that even for a kid to write about, is very spot on. Mind you, the BFF and I don't have kids (not fans), and yet we still come back every couple of months to see their ever changing show. So yes, adults - this show is still hilarious and worth seeing, even for us "grown-ups". Do yourself a favor, go see a show, and bring your friends. You're going to be addicted. PS: "The Long Day" will forever be the best sketch of them all. If you're ever lucky to see it, you'll probably tear up laughing as well.

Kennedy (classic tragedy), and a bunny who ninja-fights bears (very Matrix-y) all in one night AND support creative writing programs in Chicago public schools at the same time? Barrel of Monkeys! This is the real have fun, do good deal - BofM runs creative writing programs in Chicago schools and turns the kids' stories, poems, and plays into performance pieces. The show, called That's Weird, Grandma, is held at the Neo Futurarium Monday nights at 8 and is a total steal at $10. I was first tuned in to That's Weird, Grandma after seeing one of the Barrel of Monkeys actors in The Neofuturist's Daredevils' Hamlet (Brennan Buhl, who, mark my words, will be famous). I managed to snag tickets through Free Night of Theater. My expectations were low - I tend to find Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind shows uneven - some are fantastic and some are meh. I sort of saw That's Weird, Grandma as the little brother of TMLMTBGB. The first few skits seemed to confirm my bias, but after that, I was blown away. I've seen several shows recently (including one at Steppenwolf) and That's Weird, Grandma has been far and away the best. I laughed so hard I cried. Literally. And the best part? You get to vote for your favorite and least favorite plays, so the duds are quickly jettisoned from the show. Go see this. See it next Monday. Bring your friends. Buy a t-shirt. Do it for the kids. Won't somebody please think of the children?!?!

Mitch has an extremely comprehensive curriculum and a super casual and fun approach to teaching the guitar! Originally, I started in the studio but due to Covid we were seamlessly able to convert to virtual with zero issues and it's amazing!!! This comes from a guy who noodled and noodled for YEARS in my previous playing without a proper teacher or direction. The Youtube dreamer... I can say that this 5 month (once a week) period is the most I have ever learned about an instrument, music and just all around being a musician. I don't think I even set out to become a musician when I picked up my guitar for the first time in years, but if you hang with this program, you will become a musician too(I'm not there yet but I see it!). So yes, even for someone a bit older as myself, this program is the place to be. Not to mention, the pure joy and sense of fulfillment that comes with learning, failures, new horizons - all within the program. You really have no idea just how good you can get in a short period of time, and I'm talking to everyone. Highly recommended.

Later became a subscriber, and have enjoyed every play I've seen since, and really appreciate the "Talk Backs", Q&A sessions which allow you to interact with the actors, and learn more about the plays. The subscription prices are unbelievably reasonable, but my favorite thing is the "Flex Pass" - you don't have to commit to specific dates immediately, which is invaluable when coordinating with other subscribers. On my list of "Ten Best Ways to Spend a Sunday Afternoon", a play at Remy Bumppo followed by a beer and a burger at John Barleycorn is very near the top!

I am so surprised there aren't more reviews about this theatre!! But that is its key problem: It…read moredoesn't advertise. No one knows about Remy Bumppo despite its unusual name and history, and despite incredible performances, despite its ability to turn me on to playwrights I knew nothing about, despite that it can get me thinking and despite that it has me craving more theatre -- seriously wishing for the next performance. Despite all this, its ambience beyond the lobby is that of a real warehouse/ experimental theatre which they share with at least one other theatre company (Eclipse). I believe this is because the Remy Bumppo Theatre Company does not have a full understanding of non-traditional marketing or guerrilla tactics for pr and their applications in today's world (and how you can achieve so much by spending so little.) I mean, I have attended one of their openings, and the food spread was opulent -- more opulent than Victory Gardens' who has a seriously beautiful and wholly owned theatre. But I digress. I'll offer marketing advice when they call me, but otherwise, I'll stick to the theatre review. And the theatre is magnificent. I saw a Pinter play almost a year ago here and haven't stopped thinking about it. I've even followed Pinter works up to Evanston to compare (and to make it clear: The Remy Bumppo performance surprised me by being far better -- like professional v. amateur -- than the Piven Theatre's). I've laughed at everything they've done and come out lighter -- even though some of their works were seriously heavy. They just know how to pick 'em: playwrights, directors and actors alike. First-rate, all the way. Remy Bumppo lends something powerful and meaningful and fun and unexpected to your life. That is why you should spend your money here. I know people in Chicago who don't consider themselves serious theatre-goers (and some who do) think that the end-all, be-all of theatre is "Wicked," but this is FAR BETTER than that. FAR more entertaining. And costs a lot less for which you will end up with so much more. I promise.
