Located in Chicago's Lincoln Square neighborhood, Musical Chairs is an ensemble of professional music instructors that provides constructive and encouraging music education. What began as one teacher and ten students has grown to twelve instructors and nearly 200 students. Students enjoy a home-grown, nurturing environment together with our holistic approach to music which includes private instruction, group lessons and exposure to many instruments.
The instructors at Musical Chairs collaborated to make music instruction fresh, innovative, and responsive to student needs. We recognize that every student is different in his or her capacity to learn, as well as his or her goals for learning music. We strive to be sensitive to each student and tailor our approach to challenge each at his or her own pace and level.
We currently offer private lessons in piano, voice, guitar, violin, cello, drums, trumpet, clarinet, flute and saxophone. We teach the classic fundamentals of theory and instrument technique, while choosing, in conjunction with the student, a progression of repertoire that is enjoyable and reinforces various target skills. We take a positive approach to music making with an overarching goal of inspiring students to love music and music making-not dread it!
History
Established in 2005.
Musical Chairs was founded in response to Lisa Borelli's perception of a growing need for quality music instruction that children actually enjoy, not dread! After hearing numerous stories involving teachers who made music lessons rigid and inflexible, Lisa envisioned a group of handpicked, engaging instructors who would team up to share resources, best practices and offer a superior musical experience for all the students at Musical Chairs.
Today, Musical Chairs teachers nearly every instrument as well as offers an early childhood program, group classes including Drama and Glee Club and in-school enrichment programs.
Meet the Business Owner: Lisa B.
Lisa Borelli has been playing the piano since she was five years old. Under the direction of Lucretia Peterson of Salt Lake City, Utah, Lisa played competitively on a state level throughout Junior and High School. She received numerous honors in piano performance, played publicly throughout the inter-mountain area, and also participated in the music and vocal program at Lewis and Clark College of Portland, Oregon. She studied music at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. The mother of three musical children, she currently maintains a group of students herself as well as augments her program with the diverse and high-quality instruction of the other Musical Chairs instruction team. Lisa believes music is the single most important childhood experience that has shaped her life and feels blessed for the opportunity to pass this on to other children.
