This is the kind of store I have in my hometown in the US. Just like here, even though they're small they've probably got what you need. I bought gardening tools their. They didn't have tools for a large garden but small ones perfect for the back yard.

I love this store, it is just as a hardware store should be. It is small and absolutely crammed…read morefull of everything you might need. They have never let me down yet. It is a family run business and they really know what they are talking about (even if you don't!). The service is a class above what you will get in a big DIY store. They will find a solution to your problems and they will sell you the best item for your needs, not the dearest. Highly recommended.

If you only need one thing it is probably just as cheap to come here and far easier. And they sell things individually so if you only want 1 screw to finish a job but it has to be an exact size then this is a far better option.

You pay a hefty premium for the convenience and location though, so be aware that it might well be much cheaper elsewhere. Sometimes though, when you need that vital bit of kit but can't travel to the north circular to get it, I'm happy to pay the extra.

I have found the prices in comparison with chain stores mixed though more often than not they are cheaper. I love the second hand furniture they sell. There is some really retro stuff on occasion. I bought a great stool for £6 which I will reupholster and a stylish 1960s chest of drawers for £16. Open useful hours weekends and bank holidays too.

It used to be where Toys 'r Us now is but moved to its current larger premises around five years ago. The store is excellent for buying anything DIY related and also for looking at furniture for the home. The garden section is good, but the selection of plants isn't as good as B&Q. Look out for good deals on their home furniture, kitchens and bathrooms. We recently purchased a couple of sofas on a two for one offer. Look out for their 10% weekends and if you know anybody that works for Argos or Homebase then ask them about the 20% friends and family weekends.

They do sell the more traditional diy items and products such as tools and diy materials. The only problem I find with them is that of the major DIY stores such as B&Q and Wickes, Homebase is really the most expensive across all ranges. OK, they have great paint ranges and a whole range of tools, screws and bolts, but I don't really want to pay up to twice as much as I could get the same item for is somewhere like Wickes.
