Thought I'd cuddle up w a book in the back corner out of the way, not bothering anyone. Ya know, what a library is for. A literal security lady w a bad attitude for no reason comes up on me like "wow, you can't just be here like this..." Excuse me? Isn't this was a library is for ?? What's w the attitude ? She tells me I have to sit in one of their hard, flat arthritis causing chairs if I wanna read a book there. Up in front where everyone can see you. And that no drinks are allowed and 'it says so on the door.' Ok... this was my first time there. I didn read all the signage, my mistake, and my drinks has screw on caps. I was just trying to stay hydrated while I killed time waiting for my car. Considering that all the people inside looked homeless, it was shocking that they'd bother someone like me who's clearly put together, well dressed, well spoken & educated. She was absolutely rude for no reason. And the fact that not a single employee came to kindly make me aware of their rules and instead called security like I was being doing anything wrong. I WAS LITERALLY READING A BOOK IN THE CORNER SILENTLY. Extremely unwelcoming environment, smelly restroom, rude employees, and many vagrants hanging around. This is the main branch of the Shreveport City Library system. It's housed in the old federal…read morebuilding which used to be the Post Office and Court House. It's a very stately building and is located in the middle of the downtown area. The staff was friendly and helpful. As a visitor to the area, I didn't know what type of system they had to be able to use the Internet. But they had a guest pass system that allowed me to gain access to the Internet. I was a bit bummed that the children's department was as small as it was. I was surprised that it wasn't larger. Being that this was the main library for the Shreveport system, I was surprised that the collection wasn't as up to date as you would think a main library would be. For instance, I found old tax guides on the shelf from the early 1990s. Tax laws change yearly so keeping anything more than several years old is just obsolete after a while. I was also surprised that I was unable to locate any library catalog computers. Since I was there with my dad, we decided to make the trip worthwhile beyond just checking email. We decided to see if they had any books on Clementine Hunter, the primitive artists that we learned about at the Melrose Plantation. I looked for any computers that said library catalog, but couldn't find any. So I just decided to use the Internet computers to do my search. Thankfully, I know my way around a library catalog and quickly located some biographies on Clementine. A good thing to note about this library is that they are a government depository, meaning they have a government documents collection. So, if you're researching congressional hearings or legislation, you can find information here. Also, they have a petroleum documents collection for your oil industry research.

This location is much better than the location it replaced years ago. The old location was very…read moresmall. There is a good selection of books, including a sizeable children's section. There are computers that can be used for free and free wifi. There's also a couple of conference rooms that I assume can be rented out for business meetings. One of these rooms is where the locals also go to vote. There are audio books, audio cd's, DVD's, and Blu-ray ' s that can be rented also. Unfortunately, many of the movie titles are damaged and do not play correctly and no matter how many times I've told them something is damaged they just put it right back on the shelf. I really wish they would take more ownership of the movie section. If they had a book returned that was defaced with pages torn out I'd like to think they wouldn't put it back on the shelf. Maybe they would I don't know. When you have movie discs that are visibly cracked and obviously won't play why do you keep putting them back on the shelf for rent? If you care that little for your work you need to find something else to do. This location isn't the safest. There is now an armed guard presence.
