Camping/RV'ing would probably be the sensible way to go in this area but if that's not your thing, $179/night is the price you will have to pay to stay at the Shoshone Inn as of Dec. 2023. Shoshone Inn (really a motel) is pretty much the only establishment in the area and was convenient for my planned expeditions, so I bit the bullet and made the reservation. Amenities: Hot shower (no tub), mini-fridge, microwave and Keurig coffee maker including coffee pods and creamer. Breakfast of bagels, yogurt and fruit also included. BTW the hot water was truly hot, which was nice (it's chilly here in winter). Lots of complimentary goodies (lotion, shampoo, bath gel, even eye gel and pillow spray to help you get a good night's sleep). Room: Very comfortable bed, large wardrobe for storage, and a nice desk with chair. NO CELL SERVICE OR LANDLINE phone here; but there is free Wi-Fi and a pay phone nearby for emergencies. Cleanliess was great. Service: Check-in ran a little late as my room was not ready when I arrived. Keeping in mind that the town of Shoshone has a population of 31, it must be hard to keep enough staff to get everything done. Everyone was very friendly and helpful about the process and answered all my questions. Just go with the flow. THE BEST THING: The Warm Springs Pool. Staying at the Inn gives you access to the Warm Spring Pool, which is heavenly. Shoshone is home to amazing natural hot springs (as well as their own species of pupfish adapted to live in the springs.) These springs feed the pool, which is a short hike from the hotel. Parking: Free in the lot. Tips: Bring food and supplies, there's a gas station market right next store to the motel but with limited provisions. Drive to Tecopa for more hot springs. And have dinner at Steaks and Beer (reservation highly suggested.) read more

Gayle and I recently planned to stay overnight within the greater Death Valley area, while on our way to Phoenix to visit friends. We nixed the idea of stating in the Furnace Creek area as rates were high, and the reviews were lower than expected. We also looked at the Amargosa Hotel (and Opera House) and the nearby NV Casino (Longstreet), and in hindsight should have checked out accommodations at Stovepipe Wells. At the same time, the Shoshone Inn was reasonably priced, had good reviews, and seemed to be relatively close by in the Death Valley neighborhood. As we didn't fully appreciate the travel distances and times associated with this desolate part of California/Nevada, we didn't roll into the Shoshone Inn until well after 7 PM after thinking that we had plenty of time after leaving Manzanar around 4 PM. Death Valley (and it desert "suburbs") is one "big ass" territory and provides a somewhat disorienting drive as it got dark (pre-daylight savings). We got a better look during the next day, and it was still a long isolating drive. Our room was in the building in back of the main motel complex. Our check in person was helpful and explained things very clearly. We found fruit and coffee available in the Lobby that helped with what I would call "transition" nutrition. Our room was very nice and roomy. Our bed was comfortable as was the couch in a separate sitting area. Good Wi-Fi was available (which is a big deal way out here), the place was clean throughout, and the showers were strong and hot. For the price, convenience, value, and location, the Shoshone Inn is a hard place to beat even if we could be closer to Death Valley. Tip 1: The Crowbar Cafe (across the street) is the only restaurant in town, unless you count snacks from the Chevron station next door. On our first night, we ended up at Steaks and Beer in nearby Tecopa which was an amazingly good find. Tip 2: The warm springs pool is an easy 5 minute walk from the Shoshone Inn and it's free to guests. You get the key at check in, along with another one for a change room at the RV park in the immediate area. The pools is a little tattered with age, but it was a great soak in any event. Tip 3: There are a few interesting short walking opportunities within minutes from the Hotel. The Motel manager was quick to resolve any concerns and very kind, considerate and friendly. The house was clean and accommodating along with comfortable beds. As we left the office and headed to our room, a rainbow appeared, and we knew we had made the right decision for our stay in the Amargosa Basin. Shoshone Inn is definitely the Jewel of the desert and we are so glad we decided to stay here rather than at one of the overly priced choices in Death Valley! The rooms are newly renovated with gorgeous decor, nice tile in the shower, your basic kitchen amenities like a fridge, microwave and coffee maker, true blackout curtains as well as peace and quiet! Our bed was just a full size, but it was super comfy and I don't think we moved a bit! They provide toiletries by the British company Elemis which included shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap and lotion. On your bed is a little bag of Elemis spa products including eyes awake recovery gel, lip revive balm, quiet mind temple balm and a quiet mind pillow spray! Really classy for a desert destination! On our weeklong trip, we had the best night of sleep here! We met some awesome people from Maryland at the outdoor fire pit and enjoyed relaxing by the fire! In the morning, coffee, fruit, donuts and packaged baked goods were provided in the office. The famous Crowbar Café and Saloon is right across the street and the Charles Brown General Store is next-door. We did not have a chance to take a dip in the warm spring pool but it was clean and we will definitely have to give it a try next time! The employees were very friendly and informative! The Amargosa Basin does not have cell service, but the inn has Wi-Fi, so if you have Wi-Fi enabled calling, like we do with AT&T, we were able to make calls rather than use the pay-phones around town. The Wi-Fi was fast without any quirks and automatically connected at the general store and Crowbar Café as well! The inn is a bit pricier than some other accommodations at Tecopa Springs, but we stopped by to check those out in our travels and they were nowhere as nice as the Shoshone Inn, so it was well worth it! Stayed in room 10, bungalow building that houses 4 rooms at the rear of the property. Pretty cool when you look out the back window & see fenced off mines. Parking lot back here is a bit cracked, FYI for motorcyclists. Love how spacious our room is with a comfy two seater sofa that also converts to a bed. Keurig machine, microwave, & mini fridge. A closet that actually has hangars! Believe me, some hotels/ motels don't have them. Womp womp. The hangars really make a difference when you wanna hang your moto gear & not plop em on the only sofa in the room. Staff was friendly during check in. Reason why I knocked a star down is because the hot water in the shower situation at 5am. I turned on the left knob first and let it run for 3 minutes til I realized it was freezing cold. Turned off the left knob & turned the right knob on. Let that side run for 3 minutes at first til I put my hand in it's stream. BARELY lukewarm for the following 2 minutes. I couldn't take the guilt of letting the right side knob stay on any longer & felt all that water wasted for nothing. Shrugging shoulders & used the sink faucet and its quick hot water to take a bird bath and rinse off. read more

I stayed here quite some time ago but still remember the place fondly. Rode through Death Valley on a motorcycle, looking for something inexpensive, unpretentious, clean and Biker-friendly. The Shoshone Inn met all those requirements. It's a little motel by most standards and not a chain. Nothing fancy but very cozy and comfortable, especially after a tough ride through Death Valley in August! Planning another trip down that way fairly soon and plan to be staying there again to see if the improvements commented on by other Yelp reviewers are indeed that noteworthy. Attention to detail: the beds had pillow spray, the toilet lid was paper-sealed with a cleanliness guarantee, the sink was remodled using a rustic Italian design, there was a cozy fireplace lit in the common area - need I go on? It's a great jump-off point before heading to Death Valley. You can make your own desert picnic in the little park they maintain there. You can't show up super late so make sure you get there in time. Because they add accouterments for each extra guest their $36 or so extra guest fee adds up. But for the value and the bed-and-breakfast character and detil: well worth it. read more

This is a basic motel about an hour away from the middle of Death Valley National Park. The staff is friendly, but are not on site 24/7. Cleanliness is decent, though not spectacular. There is a general store and Chevron gas station right next door. There is no cell phone signal in the area, and the wifi is extremely slow and even failed on me all night. That is a major fail and resulted in a one-star reduction. The cost is high for what you get. If you can stay in the park for an additional $50-70 a night, I would do it. read more

We stayed here after a trip to Death Valley, right as everything was starting to shut down for COVID-19, so we were especially cautious and concerned. It was a pleasant surprise how clean and well-cared for the rooms were at the Inn. The ground were great to walk around, and love the evening fire pit. Plus the entire town is a pleasure. We walked over to see the rare pupfish by the swimming pool, and then drove over to the old cave homes carved into the sides of the wash by the town. So fascinating. When we pulled up I was concerned that this was going to be a used up, broken down more from the middle of the last century. But upon closer examination I was pleasantly surprised to discover that while the buildings are old, the interiors are very nicely decorated with new and stylish furnishings! Some reviewers spoke of small rooms, but the room we had in the building out back was comfortably sized and was light and airy. Both a chair and a loveseat were provided. While I love Shoshone inn I am not a fan of the prize it is a lot for small town charm.

Located outside of Death Valley, to the east. My friend chose a two-bed room when booking but when we checked in, we were told the description was wrong. They ended up putting us in a room with a king bed and kitchenette. The room was nice though as it appeared updated. It came with a small fridge and microwave plus plates and utensils. The only issue I had was with the shelf in the shower It was taller than myself so that's at least 5 feet. I had a hard time blindly grabbing my small packet of shampoo and conditioner since they weren't in actual bottles. (I chose not to use the toiletries provided.) The two different ladies in the office were pleasant. They have apples and oranges at the front desk. With a coupon from the office, you can get a free cup of coffee or tea at the gas station next door. It wasn't mentioned to us at check-in but it's noted on the paper they give you that you have to ask for a key to access the swimming pool which is 1/4 mile down the dirt road, near the RV site. The pool was definitely the best part of staying here. It's fed by warm spring water at 89 degrees. read more

This place if in LA would be called a dump, but in Death Valley area it was a godsend. Rooms are a bit pricey (cost nearly $100 a night) and lacked a fridge, microwave, etc. They were definitely comfortable and clean, but still overpriced. Since Shoshone has absolutely NO cell coverage, the free WiFi was perfect. The only other option was staying in nearby Tecopa at the Hot Springs resort in a tiny bungalow for $65- no thanks. For what it is, this place is great... Who goes to the desert expecting a resort? You supposed to come out here to get away from all of the corporate BS of the city, right? You can drive another 80 miles to Furnace Creek and sleep at their resort for $200 a night or stay here. Or if you want cheap, and having a boring, pointless, "city" experience being pampered by Denny's and Motel 6, drive out of the desert to Pahrump. There's a free warm spring pool, just a short, beautiful walk. There's an amazing hike out back (starts beside the school house), and it's across the street from the amazing Crowbar Cafe (good food and prices, find that in Death Valley!), and beside a convenient store. About 1/10th of a mile away are the Dublin City cave homes (AMAZING) and the super awesome Shoshone Cemetery, which the "white pole" hike takes you past. So, really, the place isn't that bad at all. We usually stay at hotel chains because we rely on their standard of cleanliness and such. When we went to stay at an independent please we like the quaint homeyness and personal feel of it. The shoshone in is both. Do not let the exterior facade fool you. This is a very clean, updated and lovely place to stay. We were met by Jennifer. A very nice and pleasant lady that checked us in. She shared information about the town and some of the history which was very interesting. Location is just outside of Death Valley National Park. Finding the Inn certainly added a great sense of enjoyment to our Death Valley Adventure. read more

Look, if you wanna stay out here in the weirdest/coolest reaches of the desert...you can't expect much. If retro ambiance is your priority, then stay in Tecopa at Delight's (see my review; rough & rustic, very atmospheric). If you prefer a FEW comforts without being totally connected, then stay at Tecopa Hot Springs Resort (see my review, also recommended). But if you want reliable WiFi, with reliable access to food/drink...this is your best bet!! I stayed here in 8/15, in one of the newer rooms up on the hill. WiFi was fast, room was clean and modern (with a few unavoidable bugs), and the swimming pool was A M A Z I N G ! Though it's 1/4 mile from the motel, it's a GREAT spot to hang out and cool down. Along the way you can stop to say hi to the tortoises...which makes for a really enjoyable walk. The Chas. Brown market/gas is available right down the way for any last-minute food/booze/lottery needs...and the Crowbar is right across the street for meals and booze. Keeping in mind that the population of Shoshone is about 100 and you're out in the middle of no where this motel is an adequate place to sleep. It is a tad less clean than I'd like but fine for a night or 2. My room had a queen bed, fridge, microwave, and tv. It cost $85/night. Free wifi was very very nice considering my mobile phone had no coverage. Anywhere else this would be 2*s but it is Death Valley. after all. read more

Hotel management is at the top of their game and always accommodating. The breakfast they serve is above par and the restaurant across the street is excellent anytime of the day. I was in the main part of the complex and the rooms have been updated very nicely with exquisite tile work. Great for a couple or single person. Right at the doorstep of Death Valley and close to many of the southern locations. Why put up with the pretensions of The Inn at Death Valley when Shoshone Inn has it all? read more

This was my second (and last) visit. Let me tell you about Shoshone. It's a pre-fab ghost town. There are 2 phone booths since cell service does not exist. Shoshone is the size of a postage stamp. The entire town is owned by the Brown family ("founded" by Charles "Charlie" Brown; Charlie became a California state senator and in 1938, town management was turned over to Charlie's son, Charles. Through the years and following successions it has been handed down to generation after generation). The cafe, the gas station, the museum, the Charles Brown Gift Shop, the inn, the RV park are all owned by the Browns. Only exception: The U.S.Post Office: The Brown own the building and the PO pays them rent! Same with the Sheriff building. I spoke to a few people who work there (PO, cafe, museum, store) and learned that if you work there, you CANNOT live there. (They live in Pahrump.) The reason is that the Browns will not allow any houses to be built and there are none to buy. I did learn---and I am quoting someone who has worked there for years---"if Shoshone wants something from you, you can rent a trailer." One example: An ornithologist had a collection of dead, stuffed birds, and they were wanted but the museum (which = the Browns). They got them and Mr. Dead Bird rents a trailer there. How nice. I spent two nights at the inn. I was grossly mislead by their website and brochure: The "pool" in NOT on the premises; it was 1/4 mile away, up a dirt road. They claim it's a spring-fed pool. You need to walk over broken concrete steps and foundation to get in. I was disgusted by that I saw: The surface of the "pool" was covered with all sorts of dead bugs. Health hazard alert! I complained and was told "we clean every Friday." I visited on a Sunday. Hello? More proof the "town" is a scam: I went into the museum to buy another vintage Pony Express lock, the same one I bought last visit. The woman told me they were sold out but could order me one. She pulled out a catalog from the Great Western Trading Company...the locks are fake! They are reproductions made to look vintage. The museum pays $6.95 per lock, and they charge customers a 40% increase. What a disgrace. The museum lies to get money from unknowing fools. read more

Stayed here for 3 nights April 2017. Booked it because I knew Shoshone and The Crowbar after stopping there on previous visits to Death Valley. Pros - room nicely decorated, recently refurbished. Clean, nice bathroom, great location, across from a Bar/Restaurant. Lovely bedding. Lobby area very nice, very clean, nice front desk, Pam, I think. Close to Death Valley, especially the Badwater entrance, it's literally on the edge of Shoshone!! Cons - room quite small, the kitchen was not well stocked...fridge was tiny. Could not find spare toilet rolls, they were hidden out of site underneath towels!!! Walls pretty thin. Room has a SmartTV which would and been great if the Internet worked..we gave up trying to stream after 1 night. Can't see the point of a SmartTV if the Internet speed doesn't support streaming. Upon checking out was told we could have used their ice..would have been nice to have been told this upon checking in. The fridge in our room had no ice box so. Would stay here again, just needs a few things ironing out. read more

My family and I stayed here for four nights. The inn is very peaceful. There were other occupants from around the world - everyone was very nice. We loved the fire-pit, outdoor seating, and access to the pool. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. A great night stay at Shoshone inn! We loved the modern rooms with kitchenettes. We enjoyed the warm springs (89 degrees), through getting out of the pool when it was freezing and windy was no fun!! The showers back in the room were great --need to get one of those shower heads! The Crowbar was tasty for dinner. My only suggestions are to work on the "morning snacks". We also brought oatmeal for our room so we were good, but the donut would have been a bit thin. And it would be great to have a curtain for the kitchen window as that was bright in the am.
