I don't even remember why I stopped in here but I'm glad I did. Their produce is fantastic, and what I was looking for was a much better price than Jewel or Mariano's. They have lots of international brands, many of them polish or Eastern European. The quality of products seems high but and the shopping experience was nicer than other grocery stores. And the place was immaculate; that produce section looked particularly nice and well-stocked. This is right in the middle of downtown Des Plaines. I like it for the hot food bar, different varieties of cooked salmon for a great price. Salmon is perfectly done. Also, the freshly made day of refrigerated Eastern European cooked food & soup. Also, a decent bakery. read more

Some prices are good, some aren't so good. Like anywhere else you have to pay attention to the prices. I'd also pay attention to the expiration dates. My favorite grocery store and fast, healthy, wholesome lunch/dinner spot in the OHare, Desplaines and Rosemont area... especially when I am not sure what I want. You walk in the store to a well stocked, high variety, produce department, bakery, and homemade hot food bar. Great salad bar/choices also. Yes a small sushi kiosk. Plenty of prepared hot and cold foods with European feel, flavors. They have a few tables so you can eat there, or take to your car or home. I just finished a Ukrainian Borscht, and a lentil soup. My wife loves their guacamole and salsa. Friendly employees seem to always be busy, hard to imagine how they prepare all these prepared dishes. Great deli. Love their fresh rye bread with simple ingredients. It is hard to pass up the pastored, cakes of various flavors, sizes and types. A great place to pick something up if you are heading to a oarty. Well let me start I have been shopping here for a long time, more in the past than the present. It was a good store generally speaking. Today I purchased some of their home made roast beef. The item in the display was perfectly roasted and looked delicious. I was busy checking something else and did not pay attention to what was being sliced. It's a decent little place, the only problem I have is with the organic selection. They don't have a wide selection organic products. Most of their organic selection is already growing mold, and/or getting old, soft, and brown. Not fresh. It's a shame buying organic and spending more for it when you have to cut out parts of the fruit or vegetable because it's beginning to become old, or having one to two fruit/ vegetable that we have to throw away, and which makes the other produce get old quicker. read more

On July 27, 2024 I had the opportunity to shop your store. I was on my way home from Chicago, and needed to stop at a grocery store and this was the most convenient as I live in the northern suburbs, and typically do not shop here. The store was very clean and well-stocked, I was very pleased with the selection of items for which I was shopping. When I checked out however, my pleasure changed to pure annoyance. The checker, Christopher, was less than stellar and quite frankly appeared to hate his job. I had a baguette from the bakery which was not marked (no one was around to help me so I bagged it myself). He called someone over who seamed to be a manager for a price check. I told him it was $2.79 to which he replied, he still needed it checked. So this person took my bread back to the bakery. While she was gone, he continued to ring up my order. As he was scanning, I discovered I forgot to put a duplicate item back. I asked him to please remove it, that I didn't need it. With an exaggerated gasp, he said he needed the manager. I apologized and said ok, I simply forgot to remove it. Then, another customer behind me started putting her groceries on the belt, and Christopher threw his hands up and pointed to the register next to him and said, "there's no one over there". The woman looked a little confused and continued to unload her groceries. At this point I was really annoyed and said, "perhaps you should find a job you actually enjoy". To which he replied, "just because I don't like my job doesn't mean I don't do it well." I think I said something like, I don't think you do it as well as you think you do. At this time the woman came back with my bread with a label on it and handed it to him. He sarcastically asked her for the key to void the item I didn't need and took that item off. I started bagging my own groceries so I could expedite my departure from your store. I'd like to mention, the person who went for the price check was then just standing there watching me bag my groceries (her ID on the receipt is #112). As I was paying, I looked at Christopher and leaned a little to the left so I could see his name tag. He actually turned away from me so I couldn't see it! (I found his name on my receipt.) What a miserable and sad employee. I realize this may not be a life career for him, but he is an extremely poor representative of this store. read more

I sadly have to give this little store 1 star for the reasons to follow. They do not adhere to expiration dates;  so, I have to give Shop & Save the 3-strike rule.  They are OUT!! First, I purchased bad old smoke fish. 2nd, their lunchmeat which is laid out is past dated, along with their milk being past dated, and lastly, their bulk cinnamon was dated 2 weeks past expiration. This place has a convenient location and friendly people, but thats all it's got going on for it. It has some selection but it's often not checked for freshness. Compared to other grocery stores in the area, their prices are higher as well on average. For example: $7 for large orange juice whereas Marianos freshly squeezed same size oj goes for $5. The last trip to this Shop n Save was really disturbing. Their bakery goods, which are usually decent, had cheesecakes for sale. These had their packaging cover the visibility of this, but upon closer inspection and opening the package you can see it covered in mold. This store has been selling out freshness items for a while now, so if you must shop here be cautious or stick to non perishables. read more

Shop & Save is nothing to write home about, but it's super convenient when we're in a jam and need something quick. S&S is very ethnic-centric with a large variety of European delicacies and goods. Recently I noticed they've expanded their hot and prepared food assortment. We primarily buy produce at S&S. While prices are reasonable, much of it needs to be consumed or used up very quickly before it goes bad. If your intent is for immediate use, then you can find some great deals on marked down items. Meat quality has been hit-or-miss. S&S is located in a strip mall alongside Giordano's, Forever Yogurt, Panera and more. The parking lot can get pretty hectic on a busy day. read more

I've been to a few Shop & Save location, this one isn't one of my favorites. The store looks as if it's seen better days. I will give them props for their business model, an emphasis European products, from ready made items, soups, salads, and dinners to canned specialty imported items. The store needs some help, from the get go the first impression of the exterior, the entry and the carts, better days were in the past. Then as you enter you see the same theme, I did keep reminding myself that is wasn't a new store, but I just couldn't get around the dingy feeling of it all. Anytime I question the cleanliness of what is exposed to the public I wonder what we're not able to see. Because of this, I kept my shopping to a minimum, passed on the meat and deli. Did buy some produce, honey, and a couple of other things. Cashiers are slow, and I got stuck behind someone making a purchase with a paycheck or something, and then there was a dance about what she could and couldn't buy with it. I don't know, isn't that something that should be handled at customer service? Cash the check and shop, the whole thing took about 15 minutes. I'll make my way to the one on Nagle, not a big deal I'm in that area more often anyhow. read more

It seems like all of their locations are filled with rude workers who work under even more rude managers, and make this a horrible shopping experience. The stores look bad. We purchased a creme brulee cheesecake that was as stale as can be! And don't even get me started on the cashiers . They have raised their voices at me and been extremely disrespectful after I asked questions and didn't understand what they were motioning to . Just give me a verbal answer. The sale items can be okay to shop, but their prices tend to be higher on most items at other nearby groceries. The produce is fine if you are using it within a day or two. I have found some goods on the shelf past the recommended expiration best buy date. Another problem I have encountered occasionally is the price on the shelf doesn't always match what the register scanner reads. It is a convenient place to shop, but be an alert consumer. read more

This location reeks an odd smell. The staff need to be trained how to stop customers from grabbing bread/donuts with their bare hands. We noticed employees don't care what the clients do. The produce here is okay. Rotation training is needed. We found ice cream and other frozen products that expired at least a month old. The employees need to be trained where products are in the store. It seems half the employees don't know where the products are when asked for help. read more

Not very happy that the butchers and people dealing with the fish were not masked up all throughout the pandemic. The fish is often smelly and seems stale. However the rest of the store is clean, bright and has good prices. Give this place a try, but skip the fish. read more

So I went earlier this week and one of my items was scanned but didn't end up going home with me. I went back and my cashier was at the customer service desk and I waited ten minutes while they went over the camera and found that yes, I did not receive my $2.16 item and I could go select a new one but not before it was clear it was my fault because I didn't grab the bag from (the opposite side of?) The bagging area. I wasn't going to say anything about this but then I opened my premade wrap I got from there and they literally toothpicked the two ends of the the wrap together didn't wrap it at all. I picked it up and everything fell out because the tortilla was just folded in half with chicken cheese and slaw between. Most of my food ended up on the table and floor. Is that my fault too? Usually have a good experience at S&S, which accounts for the addition of stars. However, I recently picked up S&S packaged Corn dogs, which looked extremely appetizing at the moment. WOW, was I wrong. After properly heating them with my excitement growing, my first bite turned into what would be one of the worst, most grotesque things I've ever experienced. This corn dog could not have been in my mouth for over a second, and here I am three days later, wanting to gag at the mere thought of it. They were grey and rubbery which is a unique combination for hot dogs. Great place and amazing people. I was stopping in today to pick up some of their house Polish sausage (terrific, btw!) for a family gathering when I realized I had lost my wallet. The staff had found it and responsibly placed it in the lost and found. I told one of the managers, Hector, who took down all off my information and promised he would do his best to locate the wallet. I walked out the door towards my car, a bit discouraged, when I heard the manager's voice calling for me... they had located the wallet and he went so far as to run out to the store after me. I go out of my way to shop here because of their wonderful selection and prices and will continue to do so because of their honest, helpful, and customer-friendly staff. This is a great store with heavy European influences, mostly Polish and Russian. Prices are generally very reasonable, and one can find a lot of international products not found elsewhere, though it's a full service supermarket with all the usual domestic fare as well. They have a very good produce section, bakery, and deli. The prices on lunchmeat are great; typically half what one would pay at Jewel or Dominicks. The store and the parking lot are a zoo on the weekends; shopping on weekdays is strongly recommended. This has been open for less than a year and is in a nice, newly redeveloped area of downtown Des Plaines, off the corner of Dempster (Miner) and River Road. read more

I no longer live in the area, but I still make it a point to stop here for specialty items such as Creamy Bulgarian Feta and their perfect pastries. I'm a huge fan of the European-style layer cakes and my father raves about the kolaczky. The nice thing about Shop 'N Save is that they carry all of my favorite Eastern European goods and other imported items, but they're also a grocery store that offers a wide selection of products that you'd find at a larger store like Jewel. The pre-packaged food is about comparable, if not slightly more than a giant food store, but their fresh produce, breads, cakes, meats and cheese are where it's at. The booze selection isn't too shabby, either. Get the pre-made pierogi in the back. You won't be sorry! read more
