I absolutely love this shop. The entire experience start to finish is really great. I was super excited to work with Natalie after seeing her work on insta. Our consult was fun and easy. I really felt like she understood what I wanted. When it came to my appointment everything was so smooth. The atmosphere there is really comfortable and welcoming. I loved the design Nat created, and the process was quick and surprisingly relaxing! Nat was really easy to talk to, and I had a great time. Love my tattoo, and it healed beautifully. This shop is a bit of a drive from DC but so worth the trip! I got my previous tattoo with Cas at the last shop she worked at and knew I wanted my next tattoo from her again. So I emailed her for a consultation appointment along with the idea of what I wanted. There was plenty of parking and the shop was easy to find (using google maps of course). I was greeted immediately upon walking in and offered water while Cas finished up with her previous client. There's a couple nice chairs to wait in, but there's also a very cool art gallery to check out while you wait. The entire space was very bright, open, clean, and inspiring to be in. You know those good vibes instagrammers are always hashtagging about? This place has them. During my consultation I got to see some sketching happen right before my eyes and was then able to secure the date for my tattoo with a deposit. I signed the standard paperwork and was given the aftercare instructions ahead of time. Two weeks later I was back in the shop and getting my tattoo. Cas and the entire team made me feel comfortable and safe during the process. This was my 6th tattoo and my best experience! (You really can't beat lying down listening to your favorite music seeing the idea you've wanted for a year come to life and be permanently on your skin!) I highly recommend this shop for tattoos and for cool art! read more

OMG, this shop is amazing! This is the most professional, clean and tastefully designed tattoo shop I've ever been too. I have a few tattoos but the two I got yesterday at Shop 53 are by far the best ones. The artwork by Laura Hobbit met and exceeded my expectation. She has a gentle hand! She has great conversation as well. Also impressive is the fact that Shannon, the owner, was very welcoming and even stopped by the room to check on me during my session. This female owned and all female artist shop is a gem in downtown La Plata. Soooooooo let me just start from the drive up... we approached Shop 53 custom tattoo and were pleasantly surprised from the curb appeal . It was definitely not your typical tattoo shop. Upon walking in there was a notice that no one under 16 was allowed but the owner was very welcoming to our 4 year old son. I was greeted by my tattoo artist promptly. She was aware of my arrival and had paperwork ready I was coming for an autism awareness tattoo . She free handed my tattoo rather quickly. I was extremely pleased with her work. She held great conversation and spoke with my wife and I as she was completing my tattoo. Creating a calm and enjoyable atmosphere to wear time was irrelevant and the tattoo seemed to come out very quickly and smoothly. I would like to reiterate that it was very family friendly and an extremely clean environment. The décor seemed to be placed together by a professional interior decorator, Which was very appreciated. I contacted Sarah, the visiting artist, directly via IG. She responded immediately, told me that she had availability and to email the shop. They were closed that day (it was Tuesday), so I shot them an email. Called the shop about an hour after they opened the next day, spoke with Shannon who was super friendly, and said that they would respond to my email as soon as Sarah completed the tattoo she was working on. I set up an appointment with Shannon for my very first tattoo (roman numeral "VII") on my wrist. Going in, I was pretty nervous. I have a low pain tolerance so I knew for sure that the tat was going to hurt. However, Shannon did wonderfully at calming my nerves and was extremely patient through the process. She constantly reassured me that the tattoo would be painless. She was right! I had no pain! I could not have asked for a better experience. Shannon made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in the door and that transcended through the tattoo process. If anyone is looking for a tattoo shop look no further. Walked up and met Mona, one of the artist, out front. She was very inviting and took us into the shop right away. She introduced my daughter and I to Lena, the tattoo artist that would be doing my daughter's first tattoo. She was so sweet and willing to do her tattoo before the shop even opened. The shop environment was so nice in comparison to other tattoo shops that are intense and kind of intimidating. These ladies are true artists with not only tattoos, but paintings, drawings and other pieces they made. They also had T-shirts w original designs for sale. The fabric was so nice my daughter and I each bought one. The process of agreeing to a design, doing paperwork and starting the tattoo was seamless and quick. Shop 53 isn't your "normal" tattoo shop. Its very laid back, super clean, and non-threatening. There is a very mellow vibe.
