From where we started at Pier 39 to almost the very end at the Port of Astoria, we continually stopped along the way whenever I would notice a spot park or pull over to be able to take beautiful pictures of the landscape and waterfront. I absolutely loved that there were wildlife either Sea Lions or Harbor Seals are laying around any kind of dock or floating device that they could and that you could hear them loud and clear. I didn't take my large camera with exchangeable lenses so I couldn't zoom in too much but seeing and hearing them made my heart happy. The views are just beautiful and worth the extra time to stop.

August 1, 2025 - Astoria…read more We walked the boardwalk along the river today. There are a few businesses scattered along the way, but the area is still mostly lined with industrial buildings. There are plenty of spots to pause and take in the view of the Columbia, and many trolley stops along the route. I would've liked to hop on the trolley, but we had our dog with us. We walked to where Buoy Beer Company once stood before the building collapsed. It's still there--fenced off, of course. What a shame. The Buoy warehouses remain, though. We had lunch at Astoria Brewery, where they have an outdoor patio--perfect for sitting with our pup. Afterward, we walked over to the Maritime Museum (admission is $18), but didn't go in since we had the pup with us. We checked out the Nordic Heritage Park, which highlights Astoria's huge Scandinavian influence in the late 1800s and early 1900s. We also went to the Garden of Surging Waves which gives tribute to contributions of the Chinese to Astoria.

The Column is such a treat. The stairs to the top (164 steps) take you to an observation deck that…read morehas amazing views of Astoria. It is $5 to park and well worth it! Buy a wooden glider for $1 at the gift shop (or find some on the field below!) If you are scared of heights you will likely be a little nervous at the top (like me), but I stay near my trusted column and enjoy mys of immensely. We love being friends of the column!

That being said, if you are cool with climbing a crap ton of stairs in a damp and moldy environment, I say do it. Its a must! The drive there is nice and parking is plentiful. Absolutely stunning views. *Privacy in campgrounds: 1 star You will enjoy no separation from neighboring campsites. Enjoy dinner with all other surrounding sites staring at you! Plus, if tent camping, you can hear the neighbors whisper. *Cleanliness of campsite: 5 stars Not a piece of trash in the campsite. Was well cleaned. *Location of restrooms/showers: 4 stars Took less than 2 minutes to walk to the restrooms/showers located in the center of the loop. *Cleanliness of restrooms: 3 stars Not good, not bad. Floors haven't been swept in a long time. Everywhere is sticky. *Cleanliness of showers: 1 star F-loop showers were NASTY. Fishing lure in the drain, hair on the walls, gum stuck to the floor, diapers left inside. WEAR SHOES WHILE YOU SHOWER. E-Loop showers next door were much, much more reasonable. *Noise: 1 star Quiet hours are from 10pm-7am. However, it is not enforced. Every single other camper quieted down around 10pm. Except for one exceptionally loud group who continued to be loud and obnoxious until midnight. We were harassed by this group but didn't have a problem with anyone else. August 1, 2025 - Astoria…read more This small park pays tribute to the contributions of Scandinavian immigrants from the late 1800s and early 1900s through fun and engaging displays. The steps leading up the path are inscribed with the names of the countries the immigrants came from. And the trolls--so cute and photogenic! The decorative arch adorned with national flags, the steamer trunks, and the photos of actual immigrants (the profession stones) make this a must-see while in Astoria." Note: The website for Astoria Nordic Park has stories to go along with each of the trolls. If you have kids (or even if you don't), it might be fun to check it out before you visit the park. From the website: "The six trolls in the Nordic Park are assumed to be immigrants. Viktor brought his grandfather's pipe to remind him of his grandfather. Margit needed new friends in a new country so she found Fat Cat. Olle (pronounced Oh-luh) could only bring one toy but sometimes visitors to the park bring him new ones. Sven brought his accordion and remembers the old tunes so people in Astoria can dance them too. Annette (pronounced Annettah) is outgoing and likes to sing with the sea lions. A very well planned and interesting, albeit small, cultural park found along Astoria's lovely…read moreRiverwalk trail. Thanks to this fun little stop, I learned all about Astoria's huge Scandinavian influence in the late 1800s - early 1900s. Scandinavian immigrants made up 35% of the population here by 1910 and contributed greatly to the economy and way of life - embracing both their homelands and new city! I had no idea haha! The park itself is relatively new - opened just last year and is a beautiful tribute. There are lots of thoughtful information signs and displays, a lovely central focus with art and flags, and a total of six silly troll statues scattered about that make for a whimsical scavenger hunt! Astoria even has quite a large Scandinavian festival for three days each June - organized by the same agency that established this park. Access is up some stairs from the Riverwalk trail or from the street level with street parking available. Definitely makes for a lovely stop along the trail.

Anyways, Fort Columbia State Park is considered one of the most intact historic coastal defense sites in the U.S, and it's built like a tank. Many of the structures are still intact. I'll have to come back as we visited during the off season, and so The Interpretive Center was closed as was were the other buildings. There are also two vacation houses for rent on park property, so if you're a history buff, definitely check it out and stay a night!

here's a place you (and your dogs) can run or walk for days! and you can drive right on to the…read morebeach, should you so desire. i parked at the trailhead and went on the short trail which alights on the beach a little bit north but then walked down the beach and cut back to the trailhead on the road which is a 5min walk from the beach. the beach itself is amazing and there's plenty of room for people and dogs and cars. i was there fairly early in the morning but it's a great place to just walk and walk and walk. a very quick drive from warrenton or astoria. bring food and wine--have a picnic!
