Shirley Station is a shining example to other train stations in the Birmingham area of how to do a small, functional train station right. Whereas some stations (naming no names... Northfield) look dirty, smell like a toilet, taste like a toilet (I'd imagine one sort of goes hand in hand with the other), and is a generally unpleasant assault on the senses that you can't wait to get out of, Shirley is a relatively lovely place to while away a couple of minutes as you wait for your train. There's a definite quaint feel about it, and it's been recently redecorated. There's indoor waiting rooms on both platforms, so you don't need to worry about enviously staring at people relaxing in the warm while you battle the elements. Trains run fairly regularly (between once every fifteen minutes and once every half an hour) to Moor Street and town, and takes between ten and fifteen minutes. One word of warning is I'm not sure about disabled access for the platform for trains going to Moor Street, although I'm not entirely sure. read more
