To be honest, I'm sometimes a little jealous that kids get all the fun. I could easily hang out in Soft Play myself all day - if I didn't think I'd get some seriously suspicious looks... Apparently it gets a bit nuts here in the school holidays, but when there's a bit more space, the kids have a whale of a time. It's small enough that parents can sit on the big leather sofas and have a natter while the kids can play within sight/ earshot, so everyone's a winner. It's also cheaper than Hickory Dickory in Kings Heath.

It's a great extension to Telford Park, it's a good healthy walk, or a land train to get there. The land train is super cheap and my little brother always used to love it. There's crazy golf, a hedge maze (much easier than I remember it being) and areas with different fairy tale themes. I preferred it personally when the castle was still a castle, but now it's a cafe with a soft play area. There are little dinosaur valleys, and I always thought Hansel and gretels cottage and the crooked house were great. In winter there a winter wonderland too which wasn't there when I was a kid, there's a lot of little rides there, but it is a little outdoor park, so be warned that it is majorly outdoors, so wrap up warm. It's an ideal way to break up a big walk with kids with fun things, I'd recommend taking a picnic, there are plenty of benches and even Alice in wonderland's table to eat at.

There are two sectons to CBW (isn't that a fantastic name?? I just imagine a kid going around with cymbals, delighting in making a horrendous mess), one a play area for bigger kids, and another for smaller toddlers. The climbing structures and mazes are so big and well built, my 6'5" husband wound his way round them without it falling down! There are plenty of tables and chairs for parents and parties to sit at and drink a decent cup of tea while waving at their children as they get into minor playground scuffles with other equally charming children. They cater for children's parties and large events (though if you want to hold your corporate event here, you may want to seek some therapy), and the food they do is pretty decent. If you go on a typical winter weekend, it will be slammed with tots, but the place is big enough to find a seat, if you don't mind the crowds. The staff aren't particularly helpful or particularly awful, just doing their job and getting on with things. The bathrooms are a bit dodgy, and absolutely freezing cold, but clean enough. All in all, if you need a place to take your screaming offspring, CBW will give you, ahem, bang for your buck.

With this in mind, my wife and our…read morefriend Amy booked a joint private party for my pal Dave and me, to celebrate our 30th birthdays! 2 hours of carnage in a giant soft play area, filled with ball pools, rope bridges and slides, cost just £7 per overgrown child, and it included a free slush puppy! The two guys who pulled the short straw and had to man the evening shift were full of banter, and once we'd spent the first hour exploring the whole arena, set up two team games for my ultra-competitive friends and me. The whole night was hilarious, and exhausting in equal measure. A great way to celebrate my 30th birthday!

They have arched porticos that look terribly grand. The square contains a wonderful water feature that is split in two by a stepped walkway. You can have lots of fun posing for photos and getting the angle so that it looks as if you are walking on water. There is a Costa Coffee shop and some nice works of art dotted around the square. There are also plenty of tables outside of Bank if you fancy an alfresco cocktail or lunch.

But I guess Central Square is pretty apt: it's a square, and it's pretty central. As part of the Brindleyplace facelift, Central Square is a purpose-designed to add aesthetic, civic appeal to this particular area of the waterfront development. And frankly, it's done rather well. It's surrounded on four sides (ummmm because it's a square) by a number of different architectural styles: some corporate-looking offices, some cosier restaurants and the rather fabulous Three Brindleyplace - which is actually offices, but looks more like an Italian church. It has a great walk-through fountain with 38 jets (walk-through as in the middle is paved, so you avoid the jets on either side, rather than an outdoor shower...) and the odd piece of outdoor sculpture - most obviously the 'Aqueduct' by Miles Davies. (The sculptor, rather than the musician. Obviously.) All in all its a rather lovely little area: full of civic development joy: water features, nice buildings, public art and the space the host various events.
