Shining Star Beachfront Accommodation

We didn't spend much time there during the day since we were out sightseeing, but I can definitely say it was nice and cosy in the evenings. Even when it was super cold and rainy we stayed toasty all night. Lolly had everything you'd need for making meals but we did our cooking in the communal kitchen as we were staying at the retreat with friends. The kitchen was clean and very well stocked with everything you need to make a nice meal. The communal bathrooms and toilets were also nice and clean. Also, I took Kate's Saturday morning yoga class and it was absolutely lovely. We didn't book our stay at Greenstone Retreat because of the yoga (our main reasons were the price and location) but Kate's yoga class is what makes me want to go back. I would love to go back for one of her yoga weekend retreats.

I let plenty of accomodations go without reviews here, but I felt I should review this one because…read moreit was small, little-known, and great. "Resort" is an apt term for the quiet, green surroundings and exceptionally comfortable beds. It's much quieter than a hostel, but has a good range of amenities and spot-on internet despite the rural location. There's pretty much nothing in terms of restaurants or stores near here, and in general when traveling through NZ I would advise buying food in whatever big town you arrive in, but cooking the food I brought here was a breeze. Everything was incredibly clean and well-maintained. The location makes it ideal for a stop while traveling across the country through Arthur's pass or up the coast, and it is one of few choices as the whole region is really quite rural. The host seems rather into Eastern religions and it was a take off your shoes kind of place with what looked like Nepali prayer flags out front. There was also a rather lively dog. It is a small business, and you do have to pay cash (or Paypal, but not cards), but you should be traveling with cash, and your stay here, for what it is, will not cost too much. If I could have done anything differently when visiting the area, I would have stayed another night here as it was certainly the most relaxed sleep I got.

Though I have experienced better hotels overall, it is definitely worth the price it is. I demoted one star due to the lack of vegetarian dishes at the downstairs restaurant, as they offered only two dishes: the flatbread (delicious, might I add) and the soup of the day, tomato and capsicum. However, they do provide gluten-free dishes, and what we ate for dinner was simply fantastic. The fish was fresh and excellently-cooked, the steak (medium-rare is what I order) could have been cooked a tiny bit better but was near-perfect combined with the fries, egg, gravy, and pepper sauce. The pasta was deliciously creamy and filling, definitely worth the price. The flatbread, pesto and Parmesan, as well as the chili and mozzarella, was divine, would definitely recommend buying a couple for the table. Excellent, highly-commended service at the restaurant and reception, very friendly and willing to help. As for the rooms, they are spacious, cleanly: not the most modern of rooms but the fantastic beds make up for it: may be the most comfortable mattress I've slept on. The bathroom was definitely a show-stopper, with a spacious shower, clean, modern, fresh feel and complimentary goodies along with the room. The coffee and tea selection was fantastic, and the milk was very appreciated. I would recommend this hotel to families: we booked twin rooms and were very impressed and pleased, to say the least.

They claim that staying here will take you back in time. It absolutely does. When you walk in, you are treated to an overwhelming amount of old antiques ranging from several decades and potentially centuries. The property is a cafe, restaurant and bar. They have everything you can think of for NZ cuisine - coffee, other drinks, pies, pastries, actual food, fish and chips, etc. There is a LOT. Every room here is in theme. You can spend hours exploring every single piece. There are pictures with the history of Otira Hotel (previously Terminus Hotel). The outdoor area is also filled with interesting architectural pieces and models. Gandalf and Gollum are just some of them. There is a farmyard which houses goats and chickens. There is a talking parrot but he refused to talk to us. The rooms are all themed Victorian. Large 4-poster beds, with dark interiors and lots of intricate designs on everything - wall papers, the washing basin, the toilet, etc. There is a common room which has a fridge, coffee and hot chocolate making supplies, dry breakfast, a TV, lots of CDs to watch movies with, books and a freaking massage chair!! We got there late and I used the massage chair and pretty much fell asleep in it...that's how good the chair was. Some bedrooms have attached bathrooms, but there is also a common area with at least 3 toilets, 2 showers and 1 clawfoot tub. You might hear trains passing by, but I slept very well. Last but not the least - a word about the owner. He is a very sweet man. We called him to let him know that we would be late to check in. He had said that everything would be kept ready for us, but he actually stayed up and waited for us! He even offered to cook us something that late at night! In the morning, he was up and about earlier than expected and very kindly offered to give us breakfast before the opening time. He gave us several recommendations about things to see. You, sir, are very kind and adorable! Thank you so much for looking after this property and us. If you plan to drive by Otira, please stop by Otira Stagecoach Hotel for a meal if you can't stay the night!
