I later learned that was simply my mistaken assumption. Unfortunately, that ended up being one of the less confusing parts of this entire experience. I paid a $500 deposit and ultimately did not receive the outcome I was promised or what would be expected by a breeder who states they have "20 years in the business." I would strongly recommend that anyone considering purchasing a puppy from this breeder carefully review the terms of any agreement, get everything in writing, make sure they understand exactly what is refundable, and what rights/paperwork are included before sending money. Another major concern was the lack of transparency surrounding AKC registration and documentation. There is a significant difference between saying that your dogs are AKC registered and clearly explaining what AKC documentation you will actually provide to the buyer. In my opinion, a reputable breeder should be transparent about a puppy's registration status and provide appropriate documentation, whether the puppy is being sold with full or limited AKC registration. If limited registration is available, then prospective buyers should reasonably expect the breeder to clearly explain and document what registration the puppy is receiving and provide the paperwork necessary to establish that status. If a breeder can provide AKC registration documentation but chooses not to provide buyers with the documentation or ability to register their puppy, prospective buyers may reasonably question what they are actually paying for and why that information isn't being provided upfront. There is a meaningful difference between restricting breeding rights and withholding documentation altogether. Buyers should be able to verify the parents' registration and understand exactly what documentation and registration rights they are receiving BEFORE sending money. My advice to anyone considering this breeder: get EVERYTHING in writing, read every term carefully before sending any money, and don't rely on verbal promises or assumptions about what you're purchasing.
