This is a review of the tennis courts…read more If you look through my history of reviews, I usually go to PSHS to play tennis if I'm in the Plano area. But for some reason, my friend and I felt a little adventurous on New Years Day. I guess we wanted to start 2014 off with a bang! Unfortunately, it seemed like entire city felt the same way as well. When we got to the courts around noon, all the courts were filled up and there were at least 10 other groups waiting to get on. The courts themselves are tucked behind the school on the NE side. You have to drive through the back parking lot to get there. The facilities look nice and well maintained. I had to drop one star because apparently there aren't enough courts to handle the demand. Not sure about what the lighting situation at night is though. Will have to return and update my review. Tip: We went to the adjacent middle school behind Plano West. There are nice courts back there, but there are no windscreens on the fences. This makes it tough to play during the Winter/Spring in Texas. Also, parking is hard to find.

I had some amazing, compassionate theology teachers, and one who made me feel like I was going to hell because I wasn't Catholic. Ursuline does prepare you well for AP testing, but in some AP classes that have multiple teachers, how well you do depends almost entirely on which teacher you get as some prepare you better than others. However, the school places WAY too much emphasis on sports, and a lot of the funding is funneled into athletics. When I was there, I was a member of the Speech and Debate team. We got no attention or funding from the school, and it showed at competitions. I had to hire a separate, outside-of-school forensics coach just to know what I was doing. It was frankly embarrassing to go up against other prep schools like Hockaday and Parish, both of which had paid coaches and did very well, with no support from the school. It never really felt like a team as much as it did certain individuals (who were very good but had to figure it out for themselves with no coach) competing.

Coming out of Plano public schools, it was soooo refreshing to finally make some girl friends that are worth keeping (nothing against Plano, but I found my classmates to be a lot of things, but genuine was not one of them). I will have it be noted that it has been 7 years since I graduated and I still talk to my 5 best friends from high school daily (via email.. but it still counts). Friends like that are a rare find and worth every penny my precious parents spent on my tuition here. A few months ago, I went to a dinner for Bay Area Alumnae. It was so fun to see generations of UA girls and get together to hear about what is new at the school. I am really hoping to be able to do it again soon. It sounds like some major renovations are happening and it is so exciting to see our beautiful campus being so nicely maintained. Not only did I make lifelong friends here, but I received a great education and learned to be a confident and competent woman. As a parent, that is all you can ask for!

In October 2021, my black daughter was called the n-word by a white student. Simply because he…read morethought it would be funny and embarrassing to do so. My daughter acted immediately to inform the AP and share her witnesses. Once home she also informed her parents. However, I was never notified by the school. The next morning I arrived to talk to the AP who acknowledged his error in not informing us (however, this lack of communication continued as I had to consistently follow-up). The AP shared my daughters account of the situation was accurate. I stated given the hateful nature of intimidation and bullying, the child should be removed from my daughters classes as well as receive out of school suspension. Neither occurred. The overarching theme in the handling of this has been to dismiss and ignore. The messaging to my daughter and our family has been- its okay. As an adult female who has lived in several parts of the country I have NEVER had this experience- yet, while at HPMS, my 13 yr old daughter has. For the record, this behavior is UNACCEPTABLE. Given the lack of response and concern, this behavior will not only continue at HPMS but fester. It is apparent the safety of their students- both mentally and physically- is not a priority and I will be removing my daughter from the district.

As a student here, I personally dislike it due to the fact it really only cares about football,…read morehence band and cheerleading because they're associated with football games. Sure this school has a history with footballs wins, but it doesn't mean neglecting your other clubs and activities. Sometimes they set aside class time to attend an awarding ceremony in the gym to congratulate football players that are graduating or getting money, and it always last for about an hour. This year they started using AI to make posters instead of just consulting the art teacher to request assignments associated with school spirit, they're already neglecting their art program anyways, which I'lll get to later. I told a teacher that I didn't like the use of AI for a yellow bear in a football shirt with muscles in the classic big top build and short legs next to a hip hop studio station looking things, and said teacher told me "Why don't you just go to a different school?". Look, I didn't even want to go to this school and it's not like I can leave, but you shouldn't tell a student, especially a P-TECH student to leave this school because they don't like the staff using AI to make school posters when school spirit has and should always be human-made and expressed. On top of back, back to the neglected art topic, if I'm not mistaken SOC is paired up with Mountain View which I believe is a college very passionate with art. I had a tour of which I hope was the same school, and they had a whole hallway to show case art, a pottery room, there was even an Alice In Wonderland theater going on that friday. It's ironic that SOC is using AI imaging, one of the top things fighting artists, while being allegedly paired with an art college, not to mention this college is the reason the P-TECH program is relatively there and functioning in SOC. On top of that, the P-TECH majors there at the time I'm writing this is Personal Computering, Electrical Technology, Kinesiology(for some reason, no shame to it it's just a little absurd to me), and one related to piloting. Notice how there isn't an Art related major? I initially figured majors were a difficult process to have when being a P-TECH high school so I asked a P-TECH counselors why despite being paired with a college that has a passionate art reputation, we have no art majors, she gave me an explanation I understood, but ove explained it a lot that I didn't understand anymore. I told why I didn't understand, and she just told me she overexplained to make sure the ones she's talking to understands, which also didn't make sense to me because she didn't really try to undermine her overexplaining, and the conversation was going on much longer than I expected it to, mostly due to the overexplaining. This school also caused me a lot of stress socially wise. The work there is fine, it's just the classmates and other students I had along with a good chunk of the teachers that made me want to rebel my reputation of a being the obedient, gifted, over-achieving kid. I feel it now despite it only being a month in this school year as a Sophomore. Also, same teacher that told me to go to a different school, she does this thing where she has podiums for different class periods and she has growth goals. I understand that the growth goals aren't of her control, which is why I'm more commenting on the district right now but she's still in relevance. Nevertheless, I don't think a competitive circumstance will help kids do better performance wise. Sure, some poeple get that overzealous thrill, but many other people would feel pressured and may not do their best as a result, or others might shut down entirely. Just saying, people experience expectations very differently, and I find that her classroom system, which is common but she mentions the podium stuff more often than any teacher I had, isn't a 100% guaranteed boost one-size-fits-all. In addition to growth goals, I don't find them very helpful either. Sure, they just be there to help students know what grades are considered an improvement, but the same teacher tells us that we should always be performing above our growth goal. Take, for example, my growth goal, which is a 94. If you think about it, that menas I can only miss one or no questions on every assignment, maybe two questions if I'm lucky, and that isn't healthy. No kid should be expected to perform almost perfect grades on every classwork given to them just because of a score. No human, especially teenagers and children, are robots. We can't ingrave mistakes in our memories and smoothly answer questions and meet high standards. Humans are flawed creatures and realistically make mistakes, but that doesn't make you stupid or intelligent, let alone unfit for a progam like P-TECH, it just makes you imperfect, and the concept of perfect is already an impossible standard, so don't make someone obsess over it because its only gonna cause burn-out and low self-esteem. That campus was on top of it! I didn't have to call my Point of Contact to him for him/them I've arrived, my escort told me it's what he does. Iiiii liiiiike, very impressive. As I mentioned I needed to use the restroom before our trip to Houston and was escorted to their NEW SPORTS FACILITY! Wowza, it was a beaut! Seriously, this place prepares you in ways you don't recognize until years later, and then you're all the more appreciative when you're old enough and mature enough to appreciate such things. And as Scott said, I've made some great lifetime friends at the school, no doubt the contacts come in handy for a variety of things... The kids I have worked with are wonderful and always so respectful. The school seems to be kept in good condition. Parking can be difficult in the back lot by the gym if you're there when school lets out. The traffic flow isn't designed well. Overall a nice school!
